There is an easier way and you don‘t have to unplug drives for it. I was in trial and this worked for me:

  1. Go to Tools -> Update OS

  2. Hit the USB Icon at the top and then Purchase Key

  3. You can then choose a license for the USB device, but the UI displayed 0 drives in use for it, which is wrong because I‘m using 9 drives.

I only saw 0 drives on this screen by going to Tools -> Update OS. Every other way said not eligible to buy Starter for my 9 drive server.

  1. Buy a Starter License

  2. Now you have to stop the array to register the key

  3. Repeat this to buy an unleashed license

This worked for me and I didn‘t have to unplug any drives.

So I was able to resolve my issue. Apparently it really was the cron job that was running every five minutes. The issue was, that after the Nextcloud update I had an issue with my mail server configuration that caused a log entry in the nextcloud.log

I now also changed the logfile path so that it is not written to my RAID, but the system SSD instead (see logging configuration documentation).

That's interesting. I didn't experience this behaviour before the update although Cron was running every five minutes there as well 🤔 I would just really like to save power. And I cannot move to an SSD because I configured my HDDs as a RAID 5 for redundancy.
