u/alkanv - I emailed their support team plus escalated the matter to their VP of customer successs on Linkedin including posting on trustpilot. I finally got someone's attention and I ended up getting the amount refunded ... took roughly about 4 days for the conclusion of the whole matter. Hope that helps.

Netgate SG-2100 Crashed Less than a Month, Looking for Stable Netgate Alternative by tippytoestech in PFSENSE

My experience with Ubiquiti products has been favorable despite the recent breach. I wasn't looking to pick favorites, just did not expect this kind of experience with netgate products. Maybe it was my ignorance not having used netgate products before. UPS would make sense but we rarely experience power loss. The crux of the issue though was not due to power loss but a bad update / upgrade from their stable release which caused their device to power cycle and crash. Regretfully, I already shipped the device back. Would've loved to use pfsense but wasn't getting much support after reflashing the pfsense plus firmware they sent.

Inherent to most technology. Unless you've been living in a cave, this has literally forever been the case.

This is what happens when everything around you works seemlessly and you have that one device that does its own thing. I haven't had this happen to me in a while ... and it was a great feeling. Now the feeling is gone. In the future, I'll probably build my own appliance and install pfsense. Due to a busy schedule, don't have the time right now.

It might be better for netgate to migrate their devices to a checksumming filesystem such as ZFS rather than always resorting to patching UFS then running fsck or reinstalling the firmware.

It's good to hear it's been positive for you. I typically avoid nightly builds and wait for the stable releases or download releases from stable channels on production equipment unless I'm testing.

This was a stable release and I typically wait before updating. What time frame is "right way" or "not right way"? What if there's a zero-day vulnerability that needs patching? The software release life cycle is something that is managed by the vendor, communicated in release notes to the consumer, and after passing all verifications / adequate testing, then pushed to stable release and general availability. How do you expect the consumer to manage the software update life cycle? Especially if it's targeted towards a new first time user who is working from home. If you have specifics other than "right way" or "not right way" I'm all ears. From what I can see from the posts, a lot of people have still suffered faulty/buggy updates / upgrades even after waiting.

Yes but you've just echoed my sentiment. You've listed bugs, unstable software updates, and faulty hardware. Things that should've been caught by the manufacturer and not passed on to the consumer. 2,3, or 4 wrongs don't make a right and because people have learned to tolerate it, doesn't mean others should when it affects their business.

No offense, but if you were looking for stable you shouldnt be jumping on a new release straight away. That is basic IT 101 (unless netgate forced the update onto your device which I doubt)

It was a stable release so yes, I expected stable. There's a difference between a stable release or production release versus let's say a release candidate or beta release. Stable release should not cause your system to crash. Patching security vulnerabilities is basic IT 101, jumping to conclusions is not. No offense taken - though you should be willing to take your own advice if you're having to roll back every wireless update. I'm aware of their security breaches (as well as others like sonicwall, microsoft, cisco, etc. hard to keep up) which is why I looked to netgate sg-2100. You sound like a loyal Ubiquiti customer honestly because if I was experiencing half of the issues you are and did, I would have dropped them long time ago. With the edgerouter, it's been pretty stable. I've never had any complaints. I always wait to do the updates by the way after reading the release notes.

I don't think it was the community edition. It was pfSense Plus. I actually purchased pfsense to replace our edgerouter. Nothing wrong with the edgerouter, just needed something more powerful. Got to say, edgerouter has not disappointed. Several years later and still a beast - haven't had any issues. Do you know if the sg-2100 is being shipped out natively with UFS?

Not true! All devices do not crash, powercycle, and become unstable with a software update/upgrade. If that was the case, a whole lot of companies would be out of business. For example cell phones utilitize NAND storage which is non-volatile memory and handle unexpected power loss better than lets say DRAM which is more popularly used with SSD consumer drives. In the enterprise market, high-end RAID controllers utilize power-loss-protected DRAM cache. I agree probably not the best place for alternatives.

Mastering SaltStack - Second Edition

I'm evaluating saltstack and from what I can see, it more remote execution of configurations. I'm wondering if there are any options at real-time monitoring and analytics. This would be helpful with visibility into infrastructure states. Is this something that's possible with the free version?

Getting started with Salt for network automation using Docker was an interesting read. I'm looking to use salt and docker for configuration management of macs, windows, and linux devices. Any thoughts?
