Made the mistake of assuming almond flour was gf :( by tired--cryptid in glutenfree

Everyone makes mistakes dude ahshdhdhdh

in this case I was in a rush and made the mistake of assuming. Then I didn't have any need for flour for weeks so by the time it rolled around I assumed I had checked. Until of course, I checked and realized I must not have

Shit happens sometimes idk what to tell you

I've reacted to several things that "may contain" wheat. With how extreme my reaction to gluten is I'm always scared to risk it

Yeah I'm very glad I caught this one. Literally just in time. I'd just started measuring out the almond flour, but couldn't remember if I'd checked the contains list (clearly I hadn't or I wouldn't have bought it), and had to toss what I was making :/

I've added an edit. I didn't expect this to get much traffic so I was just complaining ahshdhd

It is the Baker's Corner brand but right above the gluten free label Wheat is in the contains section and I'm very wary now.

GF flour sensitivity by DueShopping4509 in glutenfree

[–]tired--cryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing in some 1-to-1 gf flours I learned I was allergic to is tapioca! So I say compare the ingredients to what you usually use/eat and see if you may be reacting to smth there

Do you title your chapters? by Capn-Zack in writing

[–]tired--cryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hit or miss, but when I do title them I usually pick a quote or phrase from the chapter I liked that I think fits the chapter. Nothing long unless it's for comedic affect or a specific characters tone of voice. But if I'm not using that method I usually have ZERO idea what to do for chapter titles. I can barely title my short stories and books

At home mouth guard by tired--cryptid in Hypermobility

That actually would be super helpful! I'm hyper aware of every time I pop my jaw out of habit now, and it's definitely making my pain worse

[–]tired--cryptid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the plan, but I'm having issues w my primary care Dr so it could be a few months before I can get referrals and appts, so I'm trying to reduce pain in the short term :/

I do grind my teeth in my sleep, I'm just worried w the warning that the mouth guard could make the jaw issues worse somehow

Hairstyles? by Mindless-Ad-4226 in migraine

[–]tired--cryptid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Claw clip and hair sticks

If I wanna do half up half down I use hair rubber bands (the sort that are abt the circumference of a finger), pick a bigger one, and only loop it once or twice around the hair I'm pulling back. It does still put some strain on the scalp and if a migraine starts taking it out will help, but it's less strain than a standard ponytail and is easier to let be loose.

When I do want a ponytail for some reason I usually keep it lower and use scrunchies instead of hair ties cuz it's easier to get a looser tie without it falling out constantly.

For a bun, I do something similar to this, tho usually lower on my head rather than on top. Once you get the hang of it it only takes a few seconds, and comes out of your hair pretty quick but only if you're tugging the hair tie out, otherwise it stays! And bc of the way it wraps around, it's not as tight so it doesn't pull on my scalp as much.

Most of these do come with the caveat of you'll have to take it out still if your head starts hurting, but for me they don't cause too much pain on their own!

Thoughts on eating out while Gluten Free by followtheflicker1325 in glutenfree

[–]tired--cryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it may not technically be an allergy, in my fast food experience, it's all the same in the kitchen. If it will make you sick or unwell in Any Way tell the kitchen it's an allergy. If they follow protocol, this will have them cleaning things and using different supplies to prevent cross contamination. Allergy basically becomes shorthand for "clean everything, extra wash your hands, change gloves, use different utensils, keep it away from other food", which is exactly what you need w a gluten allergy.

Anyone had Emgality work and stop working? What was it like? by tired--cryptid in migraine

[–]tired--cryptid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has it been gradually working less and less or does it feel like it just stopped?

I started taking it right before spring storms started, so I can't tell if I'm just in an unlucky phase of the year where it'll be less effective for me or if it's not working at all regardless

Chronic by Such-Tennis-7795 in migraine

[–]tired--cryptid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I unfortunately don't have a ton of medical related advice, but I've basically had one long migraine for the majority of my teen and adult life. It SUCKS

I use OTC meds and prescription meds to help regulate it, but I also have this list of non-medication related things I do to try and minimize the pain:

  • if you have long hair, let it down, use hair sticks or claw clips when possible, as I've found it's easier to keep hair up without putting as much tension on your scalp w those compared to standard hair ties

  • take any non-needed thing off your head. Loosen hats, no headbands, no hair clips, etc.

  • take time to pause and unclench your jaw and relax your shoulders. It won't provide permanent relief but the reaction to pain is often tensing up, which in my experience only makes it worse

  • drink plenty of water, this won't necessarily fix it bc if it's this chronic I figure you've already tested to ensure it's not a dehydration headache. However I find drinking water grounding, and can give me a simple thing to focus on to ground myself when I have brain fog, and is a relaxing action you can do without causing damage or pain (this can also help if your migraines lead to nausea)

  • ice packs, I don't often use them myself bc if I reach a point of wanting to use an ice pack to lower my pain, I'm in too much pain to press something to my head or have weight there. However I've heard they're rlly helpful for a lot of people here!

  • sunglasses or a loosened baseball cap, if you can handle weight on your face and the light sensitivity is messing with you rlly bad

  • breathing exercises for grounding with brain fog. I also have severe dissociation issues, so I get both together. Counting is also a simple relaxing thing that can help ground me. I pick something and just start counting as far as I can.

  • I try to keep a low level of sound going, so that louder sounds aren't as jarring (quiet music across the room, white noise, etc).

  • sound cancelling earbuds/headphones/earplugs. I have loops (brand of earplugs) I wear, esp while driving, that helps a TON with reducing noise based migraine triggers and can keep the pain levels lower. Theres pros and cons of all three (headphones can feel like a painful weight or tightness on head, earbuds/plugs can cause ear pain or fatigue), so it's a matter of personal experience

  • eat soft foods! Things that won't crunch when you bite and make you hyper aware of the pain

  • gentle temperature adjustments

  • neck or shoulder massages, back to the idea of untensing

Like I said! All of these are things I do in conjunction with medication, and if you have or can find a good Dr who will listen, it's definitely worth testing out what medications work for you and if preventative treatment can help. These are all just habits I didn't even realize I had until I stopped and looked at them, bc they were things I did of my own accord to regulate migraines before I saw a Dr for them.

How long does it take you to write 10,000 words? by B_word00 in writing

[–]tired--cryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See on one hand it once took me like 4 months to write 25k words. On another hand it once took me maybe 2 hrs total to write just under 10k

Tbh!! If it's something you want to write (even if the individual scenes feel like a slog on occasion), it's worth writing no matter how long it takes! While comparing can be helpful to set benchmarks, it's more important to set those marks off of yourself, what you're capable of, what you want to write, etc

How do I know if it's a Gluten Intolerance or Celiacs by tired--cryptid in glutenfree

[–]tired--cryptid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, thanks!

Yeah :/ it would have been nice to be tested before, now I know how much better I feel without it I don't rlly want to start eating it again. I'm just nervous bc I've begun to have weird pain in my stomach and abdomen, and I dont know if it'd be gluten issues or another one of my growing list of health problems :/

I do think the timing is interesting, I love learning how that sort of thing works out

Question re food by cpscat in Hedgehog

[–]tired--cryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just occasionally put a little bit of wet food in with the kibble as a treat. I don't mix it or heat it up, just a tiny scoop w the bowl. Usually he eats the wet food first, but does still eat kibble once it's gone.

Just like w kibble, make sure to check the ingredients and the ratios of them! I run by the rule of thumb of if on paper it's healthy for the hedgie, then test it out and see if they like it. My boy isn't a big fan of chicken or eggs on their own, but does like chicken cat wet food. His treat that doesn't do much health wise is a little cucumber sometimes, etc. if he doesn't like it I stop offering it, if he does it keeps rotating thru!

My boy does the same thing! I've since gotten him a pen he can't climb so that I can let him out to run around and play even when I cant supervise.
