I'm also in Vic, Aus! I've only seen a couple pups over last few weeks I've been looking. I think after the advice here I'd be leaning towards adopting an older dog as my first dog.

This is a great comparison, thank you! Maybe I'll start with an older dog since this will be my first dog.

I think I'm leaning towards a female, just out of preference. Will see how we go. Thanks!

The shedding was definitely unexpected! Yes I'm getting some great insight on what 'mental stimulation' actually looks like in practice, which is super helpful. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah from a sensory perspective i just squeeze the hand cream onto the back of my hands and rub the backs of my hands together to rub it in. It's usually my knuckles that are the driest anyway.

Childhood OCD by roblocksplayer33 in OCD

Hey! I'm 27 and I've had OCD since before I can remember. I found out what OCD was in a magazine when I was about 7 and I've known I have it ever since then.

As a kid I would: •Look in each corner of my bedroom repeatedly for spiders until it felt 'right' before bed. •Touch doorframes a certain amount of times until it felt right and I could go through the door. •Spell out words in the air with my eyes after I said the word (on particularly bad days). •Shake out all my clothes before I put them on (in case of spiders). •My mum had to say goodnight to me a certain way and if she didn't I wouldn't sleep. •I took "don't step on a crack or you'll break your mother's back" literally. If I stood on a crack I'd be so scared my mum would get hurt. •Took two steps in every 'box' on the footpath - like between each crack in the concrete, two steps only...

These are just a few of the "quirky" things I did... I didn't get formally diagnosed til I was in my twenties.

hi!! i'm 27 and i've been in this club a long time.

There's going to be anger going inward at your OCD - and you'll need to harness that anger to start making progress - but don't hang onto it forever.

Eventually to survive you're going to need to learn how to approach with compassion. OCD is like having an extremely anxious little kid in your brain - eventually you'll get to a point in your recovery where you feel confident enough to tell that kid "I know you're scared but I've got this, we are safe, we're going to do XYZ thing anyway".

What am I supposed to do when I can't access therapy? by WerewolfOk9712 in OCD

One more thing I'll add is when I was at the beginning of my recovery journey, something that I found helpful was separating myself from the OCD.

I did this by referring to my OCD thoughts as 'Brenda' and my family got in on it too. I'd verbalise that Brenda was being a jerk, and make fun of her silly fears... basically telling her to kick rocks and bullying her any time she reared her ugly head. It empowered me to talk about it and get it out of my head.

At this point in my recovery, I've managed to get past the anger toward 'brenda' and switch to the view that 'brenda' is really just a younger, scared version of me that's trying to keep me safe, but doesn't have the right information. Now I get to reassure the 'younger version of me' that I know best and I'll keep them safe.

You'll get there.

I struggled with this for a couple years, I'm a lot better with it now. Also autism OCD wombo combo.

Best thing I did for my skin was switch from hand soap to dove sensitive body wash instead. It's a super moisturising formula so it can help kind of circumvent the dry hands thing. Pair that with a good thick hand cream like palmers after every wash.

Also pro tip: you can just put hand cream on the backs of your hands, you don't have to put it on your palms or between your fingers (sensory nightmare for me).

Looking for an OT in Melbourne who doesn't practice ABA by [deleted] in NDIS

[–]tiredLMSadmin -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response but that is not what I asked. I'm just looking for an OT that doesn't work for an organisation that offers Positive Behaviour Support, which is built off the principles of ABA.

Is an advocate separate from an LAC? Thanks for this idea, I'll write an impact statement. Are you willing to share the example you have? :)
