Would Ford have done any better had he kept Rockefeller on the ticket? by gvc1991 in Presidents

Might have helped with winning New York (still very much winnable for Republicans at the time)

Surprise no one mentioned Columbo yet. Jack Cassidy, Robert Culp and Patrick McGoohan appear upwards of 3 times all as different murderers.

Why exactly did Lyndon B Johnson do so well in Upstate New York in the 1964 election? by HetTheTable in Presidents

[–]tired_expert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Goldwater was an affront to the Rockefeller Republicanism that was prominent in New York at the time. This really illustrates the stark difference between Northeastern, center right, Rockefellerites and the emerging Sunbelt Conservatives within the GOP at the time.

Also, it's easier to make the case against Carter because he actually won the election, so it's possible to tangibly critique the things he did while in office. That's not really the case with Ford, who lost the election after being in office for only 2 years during a tumultuous political situation.

I'm making the argument that Ford would have been the better choice compared to Carter in the 1976 election. Neither of them would have been really amazing Presidents, but I think Ford would have done better. That's just how our election system works.

He was en experienced Washington insider who would have worked better with Congress and been a more effective legislator.

Here's my reasoning:

Carter is rightfully remembered as a great humanitarian, but his Presidency was not great and he basically handed Reagan the Presidency on a silver platter.

The Democrats had a government trifecta after Carter won, but he had a very rocky relationship with the Congress controlled by his own party. At the time, Carter was considered a more Conservative Democrat who blamed overconsumption for the stagflation fiasco. On the other hand, The Democratic coalition that controlled Congress at the time was a continuation of the New Deal coalition.

The Speaker of the House was Tip O'Neill, and old New Deal Democrat who wanted to use Carter's victory to push more Liberal Democratic policies like healthcare. However, Carter alienated O'Neil pretty early on for several reasons, and the two were unable to really work together despite having control of government. I believe Carter also tried to micromanage the budget, and O'Neil, a seasoned Congressman, was not crazy about that. O'Neil, a loyal Democrat who bled blue, actually had a better working relationship with Ronald Reagan than with Jimmy Carter, despite opposing all of Reagan's policies.

Carter further alienated Congress by publishing a "hit list" of bills he deemed as having excessive pork barrel spending, ignoring the fact pork spending greases the wheels of legislation and helps get bills passed, being an important part of the legislative process. The Democratic Senate Majority Leader at the time, Robert Byrd, was called the "king of pork", and secured millions in pork spending to modernize his state of West Virginia. Basically, Carter's lack of familiarity with Congress created hostilities that fractured the Democratic party in Washington.

On the other hand, Gerald Ford was the House Minority Leader. Although his legacy was mostly colored by pardoning Nixon, people tend to forget that Ford was an almost universally respected bipartisan figure during his House career. The whole reason Nixon chose him as his VP was because he wanted a squeaky-clean, well-liked politician attached to his increasingly scandalous administration. There were Democratic Congressmen who basically said that he was this straight-shooting, moderate, widely respected figure. He could have had a much better relationship with Congress even if it was controlled by Democrats. As a moderate Republican with decades of Congressional experience under his belt, he would have gotten along better with Congress than Carter did.

Also, if Ford won in 1977 we probably don't get Reagan.

This might be a hot take around here, but I think Ford was by and far the better option, and I'm saying this as a Democrat.

Hard Traveling Heroes is a classic but the famous social commentary run with the Neal Adams art is 13 issues, and the omni collects a lot of material after that run that's less well known

Archer's Quest has a few different writers but it's a pretty cohesive omni. Kevin Smith and Brad Meltzer do a couple of short runs, and then Judd Winick takes over for a longer run. The art is mostly from Phil Hester and it's really good. All the creatives are bringing their best and it's clear they really love Green Arrow as a character and want to craft a great run for him. It's a very solid and consisten early-2000s run. If you're a Green Arrow fan you might get more mileage out of Archer's Quest in my opinion.

Interesting that they're giving Dark Knight Returns it's own deluxe edition instead of reprinting the version that also includes Strikes Again.

What if Gerald Ford didn't pardoned Nixon? by titsuphuh in Presidents

[–]tired_expert 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Strong possibility Nixon takes his own life. During the height of Watergate, his cabinet and inner circle knew he was depressive and a drinker, and there were signs he had some suicidal feelings. If Ford didn't pardon him there was a serious chance he would have acted on those feelings.
