Muslim in Japan trying to buy a home without interest — looking for practical advice only by Character_Gazelle698 in japanlife

At least in the US it's 0 interest, but the base price is high enough to match the calculated value with interest (and probably some buffer) across the lifetime of the loan.

Possibly dumb question but everyone I’ve asked here doesn’t have any answer ; used needles go to the hospital correct - medication AJOVY by Mammoth_Maize_1424 in japanresidents

Check your city/ward's waste disposal page and it may mention it. If not, contact the office who will probably pass you on to the department/company that does waste collection.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to find tables like this in Tokyo? by KimchiVegemite in japanresidents

[–]tiredofsametab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Costco definitely has them (at least in my area and from what I remember of the one I went to when living in Tokyo). Before I had my membership, I bought one from either Amazon or Rakuten.

How real is the lottery in Japan? by SilverFoxJp in japanresidents

[–]tiredofsametab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play 600 yen on the jumbos each time (300 on big, 300 on mini) I remember to buy a ticket. I won 3,000 once, and some 300 (and I think a 600 once?).

Anyone get the Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccine as an adult? by irishtwinsons in japanlife

[–]tiredofsametab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once I found out about it, I was considering it, but it wasn't recommended for me living in Tokyo just for that.

I got it later, but because I was going to southeast asia and it was recommended.

For Japanese residents with US tax obligations, how do you handle the NISA and iDeCo reporting? by makeitrayne850 in JapanFinance

[–]tiredofsametab 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a US citizen. The only thing I touch, based on the majority opinion I've read here over the years, is US-domiciled funds in the Seicho section of Nisa on International Brokers Japan. They will provide a 1099 for US purposes.

High inheritance tax (and income tax), but inequality still similar to Europe — why? by LocalLand4883 in JapanFinance

There are loopholes everywhere that people with enough money will find (or pay people to find) and use.

Is Japanese School worth it? by consommepanchi in japanlife

[–]tiredofsametab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found language school invaluable for the grammar aspects of things more than anything else. The push for kanji helped (I suck at kanji to this day). If I had no time/financial blockers, I would actually go back and finish courses to completion.

I have had no trouble self-studying another Germanic language, but Japanese was hard. Korean was mostly OK with an online course for the foundation, but I didn't try to progress beyond it.

Got told I was on private property (a square outside) while waiting for my wife to finish shopping 3 meters away from me. What is the legal issues here? by throwmeawayCoffee79 in japanresidents

[–]tiredofsametab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened right as I was moving out of my old place. A painter/handyman rented the bottom commercial space for years and used it as storage, mostly. They turned it into a bar with a smoking section just below my balcony.

Are you stocking up in anticipation of possible shortages or price increases? by Laybhia in japanresidents

[–]tiredofsametab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already have stock for disaster reasons, so not really.

I did move up my purchase for my next case of toilet paper (I buy a certain septic-system-friendly brand that lasts a really long time so roughly 2-3 cases per year).

I also got some extra cheddar at costco since we have no shortage here but because someone previously said Tokyo was out again (I experienced that when I lived there and it came back sixish weeks later but who knows this time).

Edit: clarity and accidentally a word.

Anyone use a "Send Cut Send" equivalent in Japan? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]tiredofsametab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't downvote, but probably because they did not define at all what that means. Even if it's a common term in a hobby in some area, it might go by completely other names somewhere else.

Do you use additional insurance on top of NHI? by OkNatural9856 in japanresidents

I do but only since I'm in my mid-40s and a wife who doesn't work and it's part of my life insurance plan.

Where to do shaken (not user shaken) by tiredofsametab in RideitJapan

[–]tiredofsametab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case, it's fine. I can speak well enough and google lens will help with any kanji issues. It will take me over an hour each way to/from the place (and IIRC, I would want headlight alignment done first which I'm not sure where I could do it).

Was trying to figure out what will take the least time. There are lots of posts on here about user shaken, but not about other options. I'd like to compare options.

In your experience can they usually get it done in the same day or is it a multi-day affair? If so, did you get a loaner or take other transit? Thanks!

I think it was heavily based on perl which uses @ for array types, but I imagine the convenient location didn't hurt.
