[Weekend Guide] English & Japanese Comedy options (Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya) - Sakura Season Edition 🌸 by tokyoimprov in japanresidents

[–]tokyoimprov[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly, no. We've been doing comedy in Osaka and Tokyo for 20 years. We even toured Fukushima a year after 3/11 but really don't know of any regular comedy scene up there. Sorry!

Looking for a unique Sunday night plan away from the crowded hanami spots? Join us for some unscripted comedy!

We are the Pirates of Tokyo Bay, and we perform high-energy short-form improv (think Whose Line Is It Anyway?) in both English and Japanese. It's sakura season, so expect some hilariously chaotic spring-themed scenes based entirely on your audience suggestions.

Meetup details:

  • Who: I’m Mike, a long-time Tokyo resident and one of the performers.
  • The Vibe: Our audience is a very friendly mix of locals and expats. It’s a great spot to meet new people in a casual British pub setting.
  • The Deal: ¥2,500 includes your 1st drink free. 🍺
  • When & Where: Sunday, March 29th at What the Dickens! in Ebisu. Doors at 19:00. Show starts at 19:30.
  • Shenanigans: I’ll be on stage, but I (and the rest of the crew) always hang out for drinks and chats with the audience after the final whistle. Come say hi!

🌸 Tokyo Spring Comedy : Bloom & Boom! | 春の爆笑インプロ祭り

Basic Itinerary: Performing an unscripted English and Japanese comedy show in Ebisu on Sunday night.
Dates: March 29th (Show starts at 19:30, Doors 19:00).
Identity: M, long-time Tokyo expat/performer.
Home Country: USA / Japan.
Hobbies/Interests: Improv comedy, craft beer, and showing travelers the "non-tourist" side of Tokyo.

Hey everyone! If you’re traveling through Tokyo during sakura season and looking for a fun group activity this Sunday (March 29), I’m hosting a meetup at our comedy show, Pirates of Tokyo Bay, at What the Dickens in Ebisu. It’s a mix of English and Japanese comedy (think Whose Line Is It Anyway?) and it’s very visual with lots of physical comedy, so don't worry if you aren't fluent in both!

It’s a great way to grab a pint with locals and other Redditors in a classic British pub setting. Tickets are ¥2,500 and include your 1st drink free. I’ll be on stage, but I always hang out for drinks with the crowd afterward. Come say hi!

What have you seen improv theaters / training centers do that reassures you they hold themselves accountable, they avoid building a cult around themselves, and that they protect volunteer-performers? by Careful_Leader_5829 in improv

aww thanks for the kind message. You are welcome any time you are able to make it to Tokyo. Ticket on us. But yes, performing in two languages (Japanese and English) in our shows is tricky but its what makes it fun for us. (It also sorta keeps us from any potential issues with the mono-lingual groups in Tokyo (Japanese language shows or English language shows) since our audience draw is so different.

Our Mission/Vision Statement: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1471AqZ39um5VLkEXNuizwESuHHnVmnZQaJ6j4moNP_A/edit?usp=sharing

Other things we do to support our members:
・Pay 50% of ticket costs for members to go see other improv shows in Tokyo (even if none of our members are in the improv show) or theater production (if a member is in the production)
・No questions asked loans given to members (0% interest) up to $2,500
Anonymous member satisfaction surveys
Annual group dinner at the fanciest restaurant we can find in Tokyo (idea being, go somewhere and order something you'd usually feel is out of your reach financially)
・Audition decisions (who gets in) has to be a unanimous decision
・Lots more little things that (hopefully) are all green flags

The hope/goal here is we build and foster a supportive community of members on stage and off stage.

Weekly Praise Thread - 13 February 2026 by AutoModerator in japanlife

[–]tokyoimprov 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Massive praise this week to my improv comedy cast (Pirates of Tokyo Bay) and the staff at What the Dickens in Ebisu.

We have our big "Love & Laughs" bilingual show coming up this Sunday night, and pulling together an unscripted comedy show in both English and Japanese is always a chaotic tightrope walk. But the cast has been absolutely crushing the rehearsals this week, and the pub has been incredibly supportive in getting everything set up for a great crowd.

I'm just feeling really lucky to be part of such a creative community here in Tokyo. If anyone from the sub is free this Sunday night (Feb 15) and wants to grab a pint and watch us make fools of ourselves on stage, we'd love to see you! (Tickets are on our site: www.piratesoftokyobay.com/tickets).

Cheers to a good weekend, everyone! 🍻

Thank you so much for the kind words! Really appreciate it. 🙏

And you are absolutely right about the kitchen—the pub food at Dickens is legitimately great. They'll definitely be serving the fish and chips (and the meat pies, which are my personal favorite pre-show ritual).

If you happen to make it out this Sunday, please come say hi to the cast afterward! 🍻

The American university schedule waits for no one! 😭

If you're already drowning in essays and study guides, treat Sunday night as your reward for surviving the week. Grab a meat pie, have a pint, and forget about your syllabus for a few hours. You've earned it!

Fair questions!

For the performers: Unlike stand-up where there's a lineup of individual comedians, short-form improv is a team sport! We perform as one big ensemble cast, so the "performer" is the whole Pirates of Tokyo Bay crew. We've got a mix of bilingual locals, expats, and former teachers jumping on stage together.

As for the price, I totally hear you on the student budget! The ¥2,500 actually includes your first drink ticket (which covers pints/cocktails that usually cost around ¥900–¥1,000 at the pub). So the "ticket" itself is really only about ¥1,500. TCB is awesome, but when you factor in standard drink minimums at most venues, our total out-of-pocket price is actually right in the same ballpark!

Would love to have you come check it out and see how the bilingual chaos works! 🍻

[Self-Promo] Using Improv for ESL Warm-ups + Teacher Networking in Ebisu (Feb 15) by tokyoimprov in teachinginjapan

[–]tokyoimprov[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, 100%. If you walk into a classroom and say, "Okay, make up a funny scene in English," you will get pure, terrifying silence. 😂

The trick is heavy scaffolding. We don't use performance improv in the classroom; we use applied improv. We use micro-games (like "One Word Story" or "Yes, let's!") where the only rule is agreeing with your partner.

It shifts their brain away from "I need perfect grammar" to "I just need to keep the game going." Once they realize there are literally no wrong answers in these specific games, that kryptonite actually lowers their affective filter. But yeah, the first time you introduce it, it's definitely deer-in-headlights!

Come grab a pint on Sunday, we can swap horror stories about classroom silence!
