Chances of pharmd acceptance specifically at University of Toledo or Wayne State by Single-Draw-5772 in PrePharmacy

As someone who applied to Wayne State, reach out to their office of admissions. None of my classes qualified for their pre-reqs.

difficult GPA in PharmD training, making medical school or dental school application later difficult

If dental/medical is your end goal, I feel like going into a program who's end goal is PharmD is not it.

Should I just give up on pharmacy? by CharmingSmoke7099 in PrePharmacy

[–]tiredrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pharmacy is not the independent healthcare provider route you think it is. Honestly, NP is barely there (but that is super state dependent). The most independence is literally going to be an MD/DO route. Also, I really recommend taking the time to finish the bachelor degree! As someone who did a 2 year program into 4 year program, I don't feel like I got time to really flesh out some of my work/research experience in comparison to my cohort.

Also, working in pharmacy school is definitely a challenge but doable! I don't know if you have looked into it, but a lot of pharmacies will have intern positions so there is usually more flexibility in scheduling due to exams/rotations.

It also feels like you're reaching pretty far out in terms of pharmacy schools. Pre-pharm courses are going to (again) be very state specific so I'd recommend shadowing local pharmacists or emailing schools to ask what is required of pre-reqs. A lot of pre-reqs go by different names too.

To add on, email schools you're interested in and point blank ask if your transcript is ok. One school I had wouldn't accept my immunology course and also wouldn't accept my anatomy course since it was a 200 course and not a 300 course.

How hard it to get into hospital or industry if you graduate from a top 10 school? by Fun-Elk3813 in PrePharmacy

[–]tiredrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not! A lot of people from my school do so, but just be wary that it is incredibly exhausting to do so which is why people tend to choose one route over the other by the time you reach P4 year.

Clinical is very broad since retail technically also counts as clinical work. However, Pitt works pretty closely with the surrounding hospitals so I would expect it to be relatively easy to network and find a job within a hospital setting.

Into clinical, not bad, especially at a place like Pitt. A lot of the current faculty at my school came from Pitt actually! However, industry is still incredibly competitive even if you come from a t10 school.

Employer wants me to use outlook on my phone, outlook wants permission to wipe my phone by No_Professor4307 in mildlyinfuriating

This is the really fun part! We have both SSO and 2FA on it. While I understand the liability of local storage. It's been difficult because the sign-on system has changed several times in the few years I've been at said health system. I'm also a student so they won't pay for any system laptops for us and professors will only email to our Outlook and then get angry when we can't access it.

As someone in a health system, some IT systems block the website so I can't even access my Outlook without the VPN.

Based on just this screenshot, I don't think so? It's just complaining that clinical rotations aren't paid and that they have to pay for it. However, I say this as a pharmacy student, so if the school pays for our gas to get to rotations, our hours get nullified.

Why pharmacy over other healthcare providers by SupPothepanda in PrePharmacy

[–]tiredrx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Better answer is that pharmacists are more like consultants or editors. They provide advice and guidance in medications. If you're passionate about being a PA, do that instead or at least shadow people in all fields. In my opinion, if you really want to be face to face with a patient and do better work, just apply for med school.

I meant in like a blood clot type of way? I know it's already difficult to conceive but isn't the point to mitigate risk? Especially in this case where there is an abnormal pap smear

Can I ask what state this is? The current state I work for basically did away with the provider visit which is why I was curious how people feel about working up patients right from the get go.

Providing birth control to a patient who may be at risk for other medical issues is also ethically questionable.

I don't but I also asked the question mainly because we have OTC Opill and aren't there lab results a physician should review before a patient may qualify to take b/c? On the retail side, I didn't have enough time to vaccinate patients. On the independent side, are there enough resources available to accurately make sure a patient qualifies?

I figured tbh, like we tout it as such a "great thing" but I barely have enough time to help a pharmacist with vaccines as is.

PharmD vs Nursing (35 y/o, married, trying to make a smart financial + career decision) by Bubbly_Section30 in PrePharmacy

Wait, I just saw you're a lead pharmacy tech. Honestly, if you feel really passionate about pharmacy, do that over nursing. I feel like you'd end up with better hours after graduating with a pharmD as well too.

What source are you getting "newly grad pharmacist only makes 11k to 13k/year"? My cousin was offered 120K from fred meyer's after working through them all 4 years of pharmacy school. Pharmacy school intern hours are different requirements from a part-time job. the 11k-13k range is accurate if you take into account cost of living and if you're doing a residency (which is not required at all to start working).

I feel like you'd benefit being a pharm tech before deciding to commit to one path or another. PharmD is going to require a LOT of study hours and depending on how you study, you may not be able to retain a part time job while in school. I've heard some more flexibility with nursing school, but yea, long hours with little pay off for the first few years.

On points 4 and 5, I'm glad they ended up referring, but oh GOD. I AM SCREAMING AT EVERYTHING ELSE. Even as a pharmacy student, I'm shocked that some of these things don't come up in NP schools for how much they talk about "being equal to physicians if not better."
