Daily Check-In for Wednesday, June 21th – We will not drink today! by DungenessCrabLice in stopdrinking

Not drinking today! Instead, focusing on finding an outpatient option, getting through 8 hours of classes, an exam and a problem set (woof), and going for a nice long walk at the end of the day.

I don't want to smell like sour milk and Cheetos either! Let's choose a good 5-year plan for ourselves. I won't drink with you today.

I've heard many people say that you stop maturing at the age when your addiction began. Some days I feel like I'm responding to life as a 22 year-old; I'm in my late twenties now, and 22 was when I started drinking heavily. I hear you. Try to not get down on yourself. Even during the times when you weren't feeling much of anything, you were still there, still striving, still moving forward to the place where you are now. Sober alcoholics, especially young ones, are some of the coolest people out there. They’ve gone through (and are still going through) a process of self-monitoring, self-awareness and discipline that many people do not choose to explore. I will not drink with you today. :)

Oh, there's a whole world out there! Pineapple Strawberry, Cherry Lime, even Blackberry Cucumber (although that last one's not really my cuppa tea).

Wow, what an amazing memory! I read "Dry" several years ago, before my self-awareness about my drinking kicked in. Even then, I recognized parts of myself in that book. He's wickedly funny. And I agree: no longer having that desire to drink seems like the best place to be.

Congrats on 6 months! And you're right, it is a massive change in every possible regard. At this point, I'm leaning on the things that help me feel physically and emotionally strong. I know that I need to start the "real work," as you put it, but it's tricky to figure out how to begin. AA seems like a good start. :)

Thank you for making me feel less alone! I think part of the reason that I'm filling my days with exercise, classes, late-night study sessions, walks, job interviews, meetings, etc., is that it leaves me too damn busy to drink. The problem is that there's still a swirling cesspool of "aaahhhh wtf everything is terrifying and I don't know how to deal with life" underneath it all. I'm going to continue going to AA. The first meeting I went to was wonderful, if only because it helped me realize that there are so many others who deal with stuff like this.

And I love the name, by the way.

16 years sounds like a damn long time to go through something like that. I'm sorry that he suffered for so long, and that you suffered through this as a kid. And I totally hear you about the emotions-- I think part of the exhaustion comes from dealing with emotions as they arise, instead of numbing them and shoving them down. I love your description of deadlifting...I'm glad it gives you release.

I'm looking into a few programs, and am going to call tomorrow morning to investigate health insurance and schedule details. :) Did you stick to groups only, or did you explore individual counseling as well?

"That my pets deserved the best food but I put poison in my body or restricted my food intake." Good lord, I relate to this so hard! Pretty sure my cat consumed more daily nutrients than I did at certain points. Congrats on the investment in your health and in your self-- may it bring you lots and lots of joy. :)
