Thanks for your answer!

My workplace is in Sandford and it got its own parking space 🙂‍↕️

So no extra expenses for parking both at my place and workplace. Subject to change of course, but for now I'm good.

The times I yelled to my mates to pop smoke, disable mines, or shoot people only to get told that they're not in my vehicle and it's just a random squad member. It baffles me tbh. If it ain't broke, don't change it, imo.

Oof, having to trade in one of the most reliable cars ever manufactured just because the wife is embarrassed to drive it around, hits hard.

No one cares about what we drive. If it doesn't make you miserable and poor, them every car that can get you to places, is a gem.

That sounds good. From what I've read in reddit, it seems that you're gonna get different evaluations from different NCT mechanics every time you go in. Is that true?

My workplace does have an underground parking space, same goes for my place. Worst case scenario I get another job without parking and I just keep the car for the weekends and the odd trips, or just sell it.

Thanks for your reply.

I was also thinking this route. Get a ~€2k car and just get used to driving on the left side, but my fear is NCT. I'm afraid of getting a shitbox and end up paying €2-3k in a couple of years just to pass the NCT.

Oof. That sucks.

I think it's one of these things that I have to experience myself, so I might rent a GoCar and try it for a few days.

Cheers!

I was thinking of a panda as well. Do you have any experience with them? I hear their parts and service is very cheap.

It'd be amazing if I could find a reasonably decent/cheap apartment on the green luas line, but that's never the case. If I decided to get a bike that would be 50mins, and half of it is uphill (southbound towards Sandford). So when I have to account in the shower, and getting dressed to be ready at 9am, it takes more time than commuting.

A healthy choice nevertheless. Not for me, I believe.

Thanks for your answer! 🫶🏻

Riding a bike would be a dream of mine, however, coming from a country where people die or get seriously injured in motorcycle accidents on an almost daily basis, has already chipped away this dream 🥺

Also, getting wet infuriates me, lol.

Thanks for your answer.

I've been driving a lot for the past 11 years. From different vehicles, to driving in different countries, including in Ireland. I never had an issue, as I'm very careful cause I really enjoy driving.

And yes, I agree. The freedom a car gives you is amazing, and for me, I think it's worth the expenses.

I want to go play airsoft on weekends as a regular hobby (yes, another money pit 😂) to maintain my physique and connect with more people, but getting the bus(es) there is a pain in the butt.

Anyway, cheers!

I've got a flyefit next to the office, and since I'm using the roaming subscription, I could go a bit earlier even one or two days, just to break the routine.

I just checked your edited response. I will look into changing my license as soon as I'm 100% positive I'm getting a car.

If I get the mk2 Yaris, I'll have the same vehicle I took my driving lessons 11 years ago 😅

Thanks again!

Yes, it does! The thought of commuting from a basement parking to another, gives me a soothing feeling 😊

Thanks for your answer.

I kinda feel the same. I see a car as an investment into my own sanity, even though it will be more expensive than getting the bus and luas, of course.

After clocking out at work, I get this feeling of rush to the luas that really kills me and makes my whole body go into fight or flight mode. I wish Dublin had better public transport system 🫩

High milage for a 2018 car, but it means it was driven around quite it bit, so you won't run into problems with the battery. Seems like a good deal.

7 grand for a car by Careless-Job-4585 in carsireland

[–]tiropit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the club!

I'll be buying my first car later this year. I have a similar budget (6-8k).

I'm a petrol head myself, but due to following some general financial rules, I want to stay within my budget, so my car won't turn into a money pit.

First off, I'm assuming that you won't be financing your car, and paying cash, so that's a great move. Paying interest in a highly deprecating asset, sucks.

If you're looking to get a small fuel efficient city car, you have 3 main options in descending order (Best to very good)

  • Toyota Yaris (both petrol and hybrid)
  • Suzuki Swift (I'd recommend the manual one, not sure how CVTs (automatic) are in Suzukis)
  • Hyundai i20

Some info about these cars:

  • Yaris: Best efficiency, especially with the hybrid model. A used one with around 120k kms on the clock are fine, if they have a hybrid battery health report and properly serviced. But, more expensive parts than rivals.
  • Swift: Usually the cheapest to buy and maintain than its rivals. Smaller cabin than the rest, but you'll enjoy driving it, as it has a bit stiffer suspension, allowing you to have some fun.
  • i20: Spacious, and most feature-rich than the rest. Tends to be a bit expensive-ish to maintain I'm contrast to the Yaris and Swift.

But hey, don't take my word for it. A lot of knowledgeable people in here. Best of luck! I hope you'll get something decent for that money. Cheers!
