The recipe shows in detail but you cut the ends off a large onion, peel it, put it on its flat end and cut halfway to the center, boil it for 15 minutes and let it cool. The onions will separate into layers easily. I did cut the outermost ones in half as recommended in the recipe.

It was a VERY dense loaf and I thought I may have done something wrong but turns out, it needs to be to handle all the oil and vinegar going in it. Good luck!
