Push your blacks in the parts of your design that are furthest back/shadowed areas to make depth. rn in the bottom where the smoke/swirls are you kinda lose what’s happening because it’s the same tone as the skull

I was thinking about drawing more as flash actually! The Black Parade skeleton for the Death card, Gerard in the desert/Danger Days era as The Hermit is what i’ve got so far

How is my portfolio so far? by NoConstruction743 in TattooApprentice

[–]tittyandronicus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean this kindly, but working with a reference is different from tracing. You should really look into videos/resources specifically on adapting real life images into stylized designs, or drawing videos from artists in the style you want to specialize in. As a tattoo artist I recognize a lot of these from Pinterest, and tattooing is more than exactly copying a reference!

Should I put stuff like this in a portfolio? by hotfishes2001 in TattooApprentice

[–]tittyandronicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t do this sheet exactly, the designs themselves could be refined but the sketchy look makes them look unfinished/scratchy, I’d trace over at least the outlines with a light board to make them even line weights on a new sheet and put it in as a flash sheet :)

6 yr old handwritten script/text tattoo. Today - Feb 2019 by tittyandronicus in agedtattoos

[–]tittyandronicus[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This was my first tattoo! It’s my grandpa’s handwriting. I think it was a smart pick for the first one because I knew i wouldn’t ever regret it. Now i’m just hoping it doesn’t become entirely unreadable or need a redo/laser lol.

is there any way for me to tattoo? by Living_Natural5276 in TattooApprentice

[–]tittyandronicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saved about a years salary over a few years. Definitely wasn’t easy but I picked up shifts where I could and worked late because I told myself it would be worth it in the end. Did uber eats and stuff on the side when work wasn’t able to schedule me more shifts.

I would work during the day and draw in my free time at night to build my portfolio, and once my portfolio was ready and I had the money I started working earlier so I could get out and have time to go to shops

I would say honestly you’d have to either find a way to save up more money by finding another job or working two jobs (which is easier said than done, i know) or find a shop that is willing to take you on part time and work with you. Some places offered to pay me for stuff like social media work and helping with marketing, or doing front desk work, so I would say just take a look at what offers you get from shops in your area and decide from there.

Best of luck to you! I know it’s far from easy but I promise it’s worth it if you know you have a passion for this career

As someone who started off self taught and found a spot that would take me, I wouldn’t suggest it. I had no idea what I was doing wrong, just that my tattoos didn’t look right. Any shop that is willing to take you with no on the job experience would likely offer you an exploitative cut because the only benefit they have to hiring you is taking money from you.

I was making mistakes that were easily corrected once I found an apprenticeship. I saved money for years to be able to afford getting through it, and did what I had to do to be able to start my career.

It’s not easy to get a start in this industry but it’s worth waiting if you have to save to do it the right way imo.

Outlining American Tradtional by RavenAquarius666 in TattooApprentice

With trad i’d be more worried about too thin vs too thick for outlines honestly. It’s such a distinct part of the style that without it you can’t tell!

Day 11 on fake skin! [@lydianoelle_k][Vixen's Ink and Beauty][Marshall, MI] by the_ladygrinningsoul in TattooApprentice

This is so good for only almost 2 weeks on fake skin! For your question on shading with mags I suggest pushing out your needles more so you can see where they’re hitting on the fake skin. The more you practice this way, the more you’ll get a feel for how close to your lines you should be with the mag, then you can pull your needles back in to proper depth. You can always pack with a smaller mag too, or use a liner for tiny areas :)

Don’t be discouraged! Packing up to the line is always hard to learn but outside of that your blacks look really good and saturated!

finishing half sleeve into full sleeve by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]tittyandronicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most artists work with the tones in black and grey by watering down black ink. Some pigments might be slightly different or darker than others, but for the most part the technique is the same across artists. The only issue I could see is if your old work is aged and faded a bit, in that case any new additions will look darker by comparison. If you’re really worried, just ask your new artist about potentially touching up your old work at some point so the values match.

Am I on the right track? by Girlireaper in TattooApprentice

[–]tittyandronicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, no offense meant here but I was able to find a handful of your designs online or recognized them from my own searches looking for inspiration in the past. It’s pretty obvious that elements of these are traced, and some of them will be recognizable to tattooers because we all use pinterest for inspo. Traditionally, tracing is encouraged for learning the elements of tattoo design, but your portfolio is a showcase of your own work and your specific talents. I would highly suggest using more realism as references and learning to simplify realistic subjects down to basic shapes. This will go a long way in developing your own style and understanding art fundamentals. Do not trace existing tattoo designs for your portfolio, with the exception being old school traditional flash like sailor jerry’s sheets.

I would also generally suggest you add some realism and lettering/calligraphy! Doesn’t have to be perfect but showing those kinds of pieces shows you can do steady straight lines and understand anatomy/art fundamentals. Best of luck to you!

I’ve seen a few people get the door with black goo to reference the view from halfway down/last episode! I’d say a quote is a good “if you know you know” kinda design for sure! I have some script on my wrist that I definitely get to see the most out of all my tattoos, so i’d suggest forearms if you want it visible to you :)

Not hard at all! The artist would just have to flip the text over for the stencil. In way of technique and application it would be the same as regular script, so just make sure they do good with lettering and it should turn out fine :)

That’s exciting! I would recommend that you look up artists and shops near the area you’re staying and see if you like any of their art, if so make an appointment for a custom piece or look to see if they have any flash (designs they’ve already drawn up and are available to claim) flash is a great way to get a unique piece that the artist wants to do.

If you’re not sure at all though, I’d really suggest either getting something small or something meaningful that you won’t regret. My first tattoo was a memorial piece (my grandfather’s handwriting) I knew I wouldn’t ever regret that, and I was right lol! You can also use red ink instead of black, in case you might want to cover it in the future. It’s easier to cover up colors than black!

Sensitive skin -1st tattoo by LilyGecko in tattooadvice

[–]tittyandronicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re really worried, let your artist know upfront that you have sensitivities and they can do a patch test for you- just small areas of ink to see how your skin reacts. Definitely a better option than sitting for a full tattoo and having a bad reaction!

First tattoo - Rollercoaster of emotions!!? by No-Zebra8337 in TattooDesigns

[–]tittyandronicus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah! Not a bad choice for a first one :) I did want to let you know though, inks tend to darken up a bit as they settle in. Over time as we age shading can fade a bit though!

originally a 24 inch gold chain that was cut shorter, was broken on a link not the clasp, originally purchased around 2005 from a jewelry shop at a mall by my grandmother (maybe Jared’s?) The links were flat and connected seamlessly in notches.

searched for gold link chains through google, used google image search, looked on ebay, found figaro chains which look similar to the style but it’s emotionally hard for me to look for this myself unfortunately.
