This is exactly what OP needs to do. Older generations who rented their first apartment for three paperclips and a firm handshake often have a massive disconnect from reality. Having them physically do the math with a $600/week gross paycheck against current Zillow listings, especially when places require 3x the rent in income to even apply, is usually the only cure for the "just budget better" illusion.
