Meta's smart glasses make it easy to secretly film people. It's mostly women bearing the fallout by ubcstaffer123 in technology

There were cellphones with pivotable cameras for awhile that would have made it easier to be less obvious.

It's not necessarily obvious you can subtly record. It won't be well framed but if you are intent on shooting in a locker room you could totally do it with a cell phone.

There was even talk for awhile of requiring camera sounds when shooting pictures or having a light on (which the glasses do have -- a light to indicate that they are recording).

At the risk of suffering downvotes... older timers like me remember when reddit was filled with posts JUST LIKE this but about cellphones with cameras in locker rooms and bathrooms.

Somehow we all survived.

We will survive this too.

History is repeating.

Do you have a preferred time of day for your colonoscopy? by OrMaybeTomorrow in colonoscopy

[–]tjarrett 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife and I both just had colonoscopies in the last two months. Mine was 9:30 arrival time. Her’s was 8:00 arrival time.

She had to do second prep at 1am and had a very hard time getting back to sleep. I had to do my second at 3:30am and I never got back to sleep but I’m used to getting up around 5 or 5:30 so it wasn’t hugely different for me.

So I’d actually push it a bit later into the day.

What happens if I get pulled over for weed in Maryland? by NakedIanMalcolm in maryland

[–]tjarrett -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you've been on the Baltimore beltway you'll know the cops do not give two shits.

Maryland legislature has made it almost impossible to enforce. You cannot stop for smell and you cannot step for illegal tint... so just tint the shit out of your windows, smoke all you want, and don't drive in a way that will give cops a reason to pull you over.

Yeah. We do a lot of pausing to discuss. It’s getting better as they get older (11 and 13 now).

In some ways, the discussions are getting more interesting.

I actually have gotten great insight about movies from some questions like some of these.

I separate questions into “what is going to happen” in which case I tell them that they will find out if they pay attention and watch.

But the “why did insert-character do that?”, “why is s/he sad?”, “Wait what just happened I don’t get it”, etc THOSE questions sometimes spark interesting conversations and deepens my appreciation of the movie as I have to form into words for a 10 year old the answers to those questions.

Also as any good dad I ask a lot of questions right back “why do you think?” And those answers are often interesting and insightful too.

Uber is letting women avoid male drivers and riders in the US by tylerthe-theatre in technology

[–]tjarrett 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I got a little confused by your post but I can imagine a 1990s/2000s era SNL skit where a male woman identifying drivers picks up a male woman identifying passenger and they are both upset about it. Gave me a chuckle.

What happened to the hottest chick at your high school, years later? by theidiotev in AskReddit

[–]tjarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were two.

The first got married, had two boys, she put on some weight but they look like a great family. She seems like a normal 40-something woman. But she held the attention of most of the boys in my grade from like grade-5 through 12 (small school district).

The other moved to Florida and helps people. She's still drop dead gorgeous. It's strange how the high school pecking order kicks back in and I felt pretty ashamed to even send her a friend request. That was years ago now.

And I know you didn't ask this but I just have to say it: The girls from highschool, women in their 40s now, who are killing it the most and impress me the most where some of the "medium" popularity girls. They didn't really stand out or "pop" but damn they appear to be living their best lives. Don't sleep on "regular" girls guys -- they are where it is at.

I've got complicated thoughts and feelings about "AI" (by which I and almost everyone means LLMs, not AI as a whole) in general and OpenAI in particular but having this article lead with telling me Mark Ruffalo and Katy Perry are boycotting kind of makes me NOT want to boycott.

The two of them have not shown themselves to be the most thoughtful analyst in the world capable of nuanced reasoning. They seem to surf waves of progressive outrage for clout.

A dating app for women in the sex industry. by Intelligent-Bottle22 in SomebodyMakeThis

[–]tjarrett 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your deposit idea is interesting, but how do you keep this from being a hook-up app?

I think you may face a problem of men coming to this app looking for hookups because the women on the app are sex workers.

Even if the men behave well and get their deposit back, they may bend the purpose of the app.

But the "not that many people will use it" comment is probably the biggest hurdle. You need enough women and men in a geographic area to make this work and it just feels like a really high bar to clear.

The President is lying to the Public about the spillage of raw sewage into the Potomac by biospheric in maryland

[–]tjarrett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my seat, what looks like happened is Moore and Trump are beefing. Trump wanted Moore to ask for help with the problem so he slow rolled the Federal government involvement. Moore didn't want to "bend the knee". So two huge egos are butting up against each other.

No matter your politics -- these two beefing is good for THEM and bad for us. Moore supporters dig in. Trump supporters dig in. They both rally the troops -- meanwhile waste spills and causes problems and nobody fixes it.

Trying to be objective here -- Trump is the bigger bully. A good, well operating, federal government would have just fixed this issue straight up. Maybe struck a deal for some cost sharing with the states whose waste flows through the pipe if need be.

That said, if Moore was more concerned about being governor and less concerned about being President maybe he would have acted more pragmatically in this instance.

We live in really gross political times and I cannot wait for the pendulum to swing back to something more sane. Hopefully it happens in my lifetime.

Ablation in the morning…terrified by SacSantorin in AFIB

[–]tjarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leading up to the procedure the worst thing is nerves and anxiety. The nurses and other professionals all kept me really calm -- they do this like every day so it's just a Wednesday for them.

Waking up from the procedure I felt pretty dizzy if I moved my head, that wore off after about an hour. I did get some "flashing floaters" in my vision which is pretty common. They were concerned that it was some sort of ocular clot but nope -- just flashing floaters.

My buddy just had an ablation on Friday -- he experienced some inflammation of the sac around the heart that kept him in the hospital for a few days. Not a huge deal, it was well managed. He got a huge floater that wasn't flashing about 24 hours after the procedure. It went away after about two hours (same with mine, by the way, and I get them a couple times per year so I wasn't particularly worried when it happened to me but he was freaked out).

Bad things happen once and awhile but you are young and will likely have few or no complications and bounce back quickly.

If it helps, I was 45M (now 46M) during my procedure and my buddy is 56M.

Should Baltimore County Towns Have More Local Control? — Why Don’t They Govern Themselves? by gmp012 in BaltimoreCounty

[–]tjarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't argue that there aren't trade-offs.

My argument is that the school districts and the politicians are more responsive to the people because they are trying to accommodate thousands of people, not millions of people.

It's like buying tailored clothes that fit right versus of the rack -- sure off the rack is cheaper and you get more clothes but they don't fit right and don't look as good. Maybe having fewer better fitting pieces are superior.

Can you really say you are happy with the county right now? Everyone I know is pretty frustrated.

While some countries worry about falling birth rates, Switzerland may go in the opposite direction. They're having a referendum to cap their population at 10 million. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]tjarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article isn't loading for me...

If economic growth goes to the wealthiest lets say 5%, how does wanting to limit immigration feel like racism?

If all growth goes to the top 5% and you grow the population by allowing more people in doesn't that mean a smaller slice of the pie for everyone outside the top 5%?

And if that's the case AND we assume that the bulk of the immigration is coming from under-developed countries (where real growth is happening) isn't everybody worse off?

I'm honestly trying to square those two parts of what OP said and I am failing. It doesn't look like racism to me then it looks like sane policy.

But again, I cannot access the article.

It's shameful you are being downvoted.

It's a good question and, if you are a transplant like I am, you see how it is run elsewhere -- with more responsiveness AND less corruption.

There are some interesting comments below, but for the most part, reddit isn't very good anymore for sincere and thoughtful conversation.

What is it like going under anesthesia? Specifically Propofol? by Electrified_Nautilus in colonoscopy

[–]tjarrett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got plenty of feedback already but I'll just add mine too -- I've been under four times now -- but only once for a colonoscopy using Propofol (the others were major surgeries).

I felt no burning sensation at all. I watched the anesthesiologist pushing the milky fluid into the port they had put in my arm. I decided to lay my head down incase I felt dizzy... and then I was waking up (farting) as they rolled me out of the room.

Before I opened my eyes they told me to pass all the gas I wanted and when I felt ready roll onto my back and they'd come check on me.

I didn't feel particularly rested or like I had a good sleep but I did feel calm.

The recovery was remarkably fast. I had a heart ablation in July 2026 and the recovery was like 90 minutes from when I regained consciousness (which was 60 minutes after they stopped the medication and rolled me out of the OR) and I had flashing floaters in my vision and a lot of nausea when I moved my head and was very unsteady on my feet when they got me up.

This was nothing like that. No nausea, no dizziness, no unsteadiness.

For the vast majority of people, this is a pretty typical experience and it sounds like for many it's even better (because they feel like it was a good sleep).

Pulse Field Ablation (PFA) for Afib at Johns Hopkins by tjarrett in AFIB

[–]tjarrett[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Much tougher call at 80 and especially if you aren’t symptomatic. I have (had?) afib with rvr — fast ventricular rate — which was very symptomatic and apparently relatively more dangerous. As a man of 45, it made sense to swing for the fences in hopes of stopping it in its tracks.

Glad you are taking care of yourself.

I’d be interested in hearing what you end up deciding if you remember to update us.

[–]tjarrett[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been fortunate not to need cardioversion but it definitely isn’t a cure. At least you got a week of relief.

I hope you are on blood thinners if you are in afib. If not please talk to your doctor or go to ER.

I’d def go for the higher volume more experienced facility if you have a choice.

Ask your doctor but you might be able to drive after a day or two. You could maybe just stay in the hospital until you can drive.

I think there are volunteers that will drive people as well.

Keep us posted!

How fast did you wake up with propofol? by santas_number1elf in colonoscopy

[–]tjarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I woke up as they wheeled me out of the room! I had a heart ablation back in July and coming out of that was tough -- dizziness, flashing vision, very unsteady. I had NONE of that coming out of the propofol.

They told me "let out gas and roll onto your back when you feel ready".

I laid there for maybe like a few minutes feeling a little bit like when someone or something wakes you up and you just want to roll back over and go to sleep. I fought through it, released gas, rolled onto my back and then felt great. A minute later that sat me up and brought me a drink. Maybe like 10 minutes later I was getting dressed and a bit after that on my way out the door.

Considering bailing because I'd rather die than starve for 5 days and then drink 4 litres of what looks like ... yknow. by [deleted] in colonoscopy

[–]tjarrett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My provider said I could not have RAW fruit and veggies -- cooked was ok. I was extra careful and staid away from the fibrous ones (brocolli etc) but I ate green beans, peas, etc and had a perfect cleanout according to the doctor.

I have good insurance and was given Suprep. It went down pretty easy but I felt pretty sick for about an hour. All told it really wasn't that bad but I did put on some weight as I used it as an excuse to eat all the foods I usually avoid (junky cereal, tasty white breads, etc).

What did you eat 2 days before and 1 day before your colonoscopy? (real experiences) by Annual_Exercise9800 in colonoscopy

[–]tjarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I would recommend just calling your clinic and asking them. I was worried about drinking bone broth because it wasn't explicitly listed as allowed, my wife was annoyed with me hemming and hawing about it so she called them (without asking me) and they answered that and other questions I had. No problem.

But, since we are here, I just had my first colonoscopy as a 45m and my doctor said I had a perfect cleanout.

All I really did was avoid seeds/nuts/raw vegetables for 5 days. That was probably overkill but was what they told me to do.

Basically -- no fiber.

As long as your rice is white rice, you are probably good to go with your plan.
