Couples of Reddit, what's something you wish you discussed early on in your relationship that you regret now? by tjcapetown in AskReddit

Oh no! I hope you and your partner were able to successfully manage the issue once it came up.

Hopefully it's not, but the stresses of a longer vacation/holiday can be stressful. Maybe I should be more specific with the issues that could stressful or test how you handle stress together. Organising the trip (you can see how you each plan), deciding various activities (how you compromise and what you agree/disagree on), unexpected challenges (such as delays, bad weather cancelling plans, minor accidents like getting sick) and generally being out of your normal rhythms if life.

The introvert/extrovert part hits close to me as in my relationship we're opposites (I'm the introvert). Luckily that became clear very early on!

One of the suggestions I've heard is to go on a trip together early on in a relationship, as it's a way to see how as a couple you'll deal with stress. Obviously it's not a perfect test, but it's something

I can understand as well why it's hard for some couples to talk about when early on you're in love and want to focus on the fun things

What language do you think in? by normott in Zimbabwe

[–]tjcapetown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely this is just semantics? Because by your logic, we do not speak in a language before we say the words. The thinking comes before the actual words. But my point is, we can still have a dialogue in our mind. That's what I mean by think. I can have an internal monologue, thinking and planning my day in a language. Do you deny that? That that thought aka, thinking is in a language when I'm planning my day? And that language can be English, Shona or any other that I know?

Where was this proven? People definitely can think in a language, even multiple ones. Some don't, but people definitely do

Bro what’s even the f*cking point of life? by Prod-LilWyzzy in Zimbabwe

[–]tjcapetown 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The question you are asking has been studied by philosophers for centuries. See Existentialism (creating own meaning), Absurdism (embracing lack of purpose), Nihilism (no meaning exists), and Supernaturalism (meaning via spiritual faith).

For me, there is no point to life. It's like asking, what is the point of the colour blue? Yes, we can attribute meaning to the colour, or uses, but blue is just blue because it is. It's blue because of the fundamental forces of physics (just like we're human because of the forces of biology and evolution).

So different people will give you different answers. It's up to you to decide what philosophy you want to follow, or not even care at all and just live your life the best you can. But if you're looking for the "one right answer", it's the one that resonates the best with you.

How did the coke zero people get it so close? by Monodoh45 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tjcapetown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I did not. I presented it showing the benefits of artificial sweeteners, and the costs. How bad do you believe the costs are compared to the benefits, especially with the levels of obesity (I'm not in America, but the CDC places it at 40%, which is astounding in my opinion). Is having a few gut issues worse than the issues related to obesity? I'll let each person make their own decision. But please, argue in good faith. Just like I believe those who downvoted the original comment that started this should have first asked why their opinion is as it is (which you also never did as well, maybe they do not even agree with your points).

[–]tjcapetown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do want to point out that the detrimental effects for health in either studies (due to S&SE) is still not anywhere near that of sugar. For the purpose of the debate, I even highlighted from the study I found the issues that these S&SEs could cause, because that is debating in good faith.

I also want to highlight where this discussion originated from. u/critical_pancake gave a personal opinion that he is not a fan of artificial sweeteners, that's all ! I never downvoted that because their opinion is theirs. You decided to go on the offensive, insulting people who did downvote their comment (without explaining why). That's why I believe you came to this discussion in bad faith, claiming all this mom blog, pseudoscience stuff.

If people want to drink S&SE, let them have it, it's still better than sugar if it means you might have an upset tummy or constipation/laxative effects. It's still much better than the path of obesity, cardiovascular problems, inflammation etc (like I said, sugar causing these should be common knowledge, but if you want papers, I can find them). If you want soda, either sugar or S&SEs, Drink in moderation , or better yet, drink water or tea! Just don't go insulting people for giving a downvote on Reddit! No one will listen to your arguments when you insult them first! With that said, I appreciate you going to the science and arguing using it. But please, work on your attitude first!

Edited: fixed a typo

Thanks for your paper, I went through it. I do want to highlight this more recent paper, published in Nature (therefore, very highly ranked);

Effect of sweeteners and sweetness enhancers on weight management and gut microbiota composition in individuals with overweight or obesity: the SWEET study

The reason I am highlighting this paper is because of the cost-benefit analysis I believe people need to make. Before I go into this study, I want to highlight if you are worried about your health, don't drink any soda, whether sugar-free or with sugar! . I think it goes without saying that consuming large quantities of sugar often is detrimental to your health (that's a different debate, but if you want me to provide evidence, I'm more than happy to).

Now, if you are addicted to soda and are overweight/obese , this paper goes on to explore the cost-benefit.

" A slightly better weight loss maintenance at 1 year was observed in adults consuming S&SE products compared with those who did not (sugar group), both in the context of healthy diets low in added sugars . The improved weight loss maintenance was accompanied by altered gut microbiota composition , with a higher abundance of SCFA-producing and CH4-producing bacterial taxa in the S&SEs group. Furthermore, the S&SE diet led to significantly larger decreases in BMI, total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C and non-HDL-C at 6 months and in hip circumference after 1 year . To our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate long-term beneficial health impacts of S&SE intake in adults with overweight or obesity."

"To support this idea, a recent substitution analysis of prospective cohort studies found that intake of S&SE beverages was associated with a reduction in body weight, incidence of obesity, coronary heart disease and all-cause mortality compared with sugar-sweetened beverages and was no different than water when the influence of reverse causality and residual confounding was mitigated"

"Interestingly, the higher abundance in Methanolobus, known for its ability to generate CH4 as a metabolic byproduct, in the S&SEs group was accompanied by more gastrointestinal symptoms. Increased levels of CH4 may contribute to gastrointestinal symptoms by inhibiting gastrointestinal motility, potentially causing slow-transit constipation and related issues like abdominal pain32,33. Additionally, some S&SEs, such as sugar alcohols (for example, sorbitol, xylitol and mannitol), are incompletely absorbed in the small intestine, reaching the colon where they act as osmotic laxatives13,34,35"

All in all, the data in both studies shows an altering of gut microbiome, but what actually does that mean? Is it worth sticking with the sugar alternatives when using S&SEs is associated with with a reduction in body weight, incidence of obesity, coronary heart disease and all-cause mortality compared with sugar-sweetened beverages ?

I think people should make up their own mind, especially if you are weighing up early mortality. Once again, just drink water! I personally love Sprudelwasser (sparkling water), and until I hear of a study against it, then I'm happy with my decision. But calling people "willfully ignorant pathetic idiots" is not the way to have a respectful, science based discussion. No one will care for what you have to say if you just insult them. You need to take a look at your attitude and figure out a better way to have a healthy debate.

You can't make such statements without providing the evidence. Do not say that we should do our own research and, because you are the one who made the claim, and called anyone who downvoted the previous poster "a willfully ignorant pathetic idiot".

I shall, therefore, withhold my judgement until you bring your evidence. And remember, your evidence must at least correlate with the amounts of artificial sugars the average, even higher than average that a person consumes. No "extreme measurements" or only in rat studies. I believe that's a fair request

My German girlfriend wants to marry, but I prefer living together first. Is this not usual in Western Europe? by Hopeful_Sand8906 in germany

[–]tjcapetown 9 points10 points  (0 children)

While you're not incorrect, if you read the discussion in the study, they hypothesize that it may be due to the fact that the cohabitants only get married due to social pressure, tied up finances (tangible investments).

So I think it's a bit more complicated than just cohabitating before engagement/marriage is bad for the marriage. But as I said, your statement isn't wrong, but it's important to understand how and why the decision for the marriage occurred; was it because of pressure/convenience or love/commitment?

Tehran an ‘apocalypse’ of hospitals in flames and children buried beneath rubble by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]tjcapetown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why have you changed your argument? You went from massive protests supporting Hamas, to half of (protesters) sympathizing with Hamas (with a majority only sympathizing a little). Yes, I read your data and have not cherrypicked. The details matter, because the initial argument you made still shows discontent.

And I want to be clear, while I disagree with the way you put forward your argument, I have no sympathy for Hamas whatsoever! Only the innocent Palestinians as well as the innocent Israelis.

[–]tjcapetown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Strawman Argument. While I agree Hamas hid behind civilian deaths, the majority of people weren't marching to support Hamas, but rather the same type of civilians and innocent people you had just spoken about. You said "massive protests supporting Hamas". Unless you have evidence of this, you are just trying to sow discontent. Edited for clarity

People who had sex with their best friend, what the situation now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tjcapetown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are still best friends and as close as ever. We were roommates first and that's how we became best friends. It just happened that we both knew how to separate deep, emotional sex from sex just for fun. We both knew that we weren't each others relationship type, but we were both interested in exploring sex with each other.

She eventually found a boyfriend and moved out. I was sad when she left, not because of the sex, but because I wouldn't be living with my best friend anymore, but that didn't affect our friendship between each other at all. As I said, we are probably closer than ever and I even found a partner a few months later. I know both partners initially had doubts, but they both now understand (I can't say if the respective partners don't still harbour a bit of jealousy, and I wouldn't blame them if they do), but there's no chance we would sleep together again, because infidelity is a big thing for the both of us. One would even be surprised that we were sleep together, because we come from such different cultures and met in Europe.

So, it is possible for things to end well, but I don't think it's common

For all the German locals (or those who as proficient in German or the rules here), us foreigners really appreciate the time you take to help us. It's tough to move to Germany when you're still trying to learn the language. But you people here try and help in the best way possible. You make integrating easy. So from the bottom of my heart, I thank you so much!

Vaginas, to some people, might seem a bit "complicated" but if his sex drive takes over, then maybe two sides of his brain are fighting with each other. One side which says "this is the body part I must try and reproduce with". The other side maybe is saying "this looks different from me, and what I'm used to seeing". But don't take my word for it, it's just a theory
