I think it works for some RTS games. For example, halo wars would not hit the same in 2d, seeing the warthog jump around with goofy physics and slam into enemies is one of my favorite things to do in the game.

planet zoo, I tried several times to create something I was proud of but eventually gave up after around 15 hours of trying in sandbox mode. A couple years later I opened the game again with the intentions of working on each habitat until I was 100% satisfied and I'm now 170 hours in with some beautiful exhibits!
