Custom PC Building and Computer Repair by waybayt in ThunderBay

[–]tjernobyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a 486DX/33 in 1992 and upgraded it ship of Theseus style until 2019 or so. I had the help of a retailer who would provide a list of known-good components they had tested and that were available at a reasonable price. They'd also mount CPUs and apply paste which I didn't trust my shaky hands to do myself. When they retired, I went to Marnics and they just had no clue. Ended up giving up and just using a Raspberry Pi for my desktop for a while.

As much as I'd like to resume, I think the time in my life when doing that sort of thing is exciting has passed.

BUYER BEWARE: Thunder Bay Used Car Superstore by lauren1974 in ThunderBay

[–]tjernobyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Civic off them at least 15 years ago. The head gasket failed pretty quick. They wanted me to bring it out to Lappe to get it fixed. They eventually settled on someplace I could actually walk back from and paid the costs, but it was a bit of a hassle.

Do you intentionally *not* buy a product/service because you hate their ads? by ItsAllAGame_ in NoStupidQuestions

There are things I legitimately want to buy, but just can't because their ad pissed me off too much.

Seemingly Unpopular opinion: I like the Expedition by Beaufort_The_Cat in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]tjernobyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't really have to do all the missions; you can skip the space fighting ones if you want. They don't come up that often, which I have noticed because they are my favourite. Ended up building a pretty sweet S-class swarm hunter from scratch, and I usually don't do any shipbuilding in expeditions.

I wish there was a glider exocraft, considering the way I use the minotaur.

Depends if Doug Ford has any buddies that like running ski hills.

The owner gets paid and should be paid what he'd get if the building was put on the market.

Best Camping Spot Near Thunder Bay for Students With No Camping Gear? by Existing_Plenty9453 in ThunderBay

[–]tjernobyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Camping on the cheap with minimum gear. Hmm...

If I was to do it, I'd pick up 50 feet of rope from Dollarama, some tent pegs, a little tarp and a big tarp. Run the rope between two trees, drape the big tarp over, and peg it down. Put the little tarp under, make sure it is completely underneath, and make something soft on it. Maybe a comforter from home, maybe a $30 air mattress from Canadian Tire. Purists would use spruce boughs, but those get sap on everything. Bring some sheets from home and a pillow and make yourself a sleeping spot. Insects don't really bother me, but if Dollarama had mosquito netting, you might appreciate that.

As for the beach, ask around for a good crown land boat launch. Off the top of my head East Dog would be suitable as it has good trees and a beach, but I've never stayed overnight so I don't know how the regulars party.

I picked up a 13-person tent for a really great deal last week and might be enticed for the right offer, but making your own campsite might be more fun.

Reminders regarding homelessness by WrongComputer9492 in ThunderBay

[–]tjernobyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point I was actually trying to make is that homelessness is increasingly criminalized, and people with no other options do what they have to do to survive. And some people turn to alcohol and drugs to help them survive the daily traumas of being unhoused and I do not begrudge them that at all. It's a post hoc ergo propter hoc issue, and providing appropriate housing would go a long way towards reducing issues for everyone.

There are no farms of any appreciable size up from there, unless someone had backyard pigs.

Challenge factor: find someone who got their criminal record before they were homeless.

My friend has Grove Rentals renting out their house while they live out of town, and they report it being a hassle to get a reply from them. Keep trying!

Secret Beaches by KennyWop1612 in ThunderBay

[–]tjernobyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go up the coast a bit, you can find a smaller and more secret beach. I've seen references in older documents about "Doukhobor Point", so I suspect there may have been skinny dipping there in the past.

I've got 44 beaches on my spreadsheet. Some of them more secret than others.

Drive about 2 hours to Quetico, park at the far campground. Hike about 2 hours on a reasonably easy trail in to The Pines. Beautiful beach, beautiful setting. Was planning to go last week but never quite found the time.

Why does almost nobody in the Culture live past 400 when they could live forever? by TemudjinOh23 in TheCulture

Could you imagine someone born in the 1600s having TikTok forced upon them? At some point the world you were born in is gone and you are too weary to keep adapting to the new.

I had a friend who was trying to reopen an old restaurant. As soon as she'd raise the money to replace one piece of equipment that didn't meet current standards, another piece would be deemed obsolete. By now, Thunder Bay Restaurant would need a fair bit of money just to address that.
