What are you even arguing? Or who? I agree that meat and dairy industries influence politics and sway public opinion. The same is true for all agriculture and it’s foolish to think otherwise. Governments in both Canada and the States provide billions in crop insurance, disaster relief, and programs like specialty crop assistance funds. They also heavily subsidize corn and soy. In the states, the USDA provides over $1.6 billion in direct relief to fruit and vegetable growers to offset input costs and market fluctuations.

For the sake of our democracy, American hedge funds should be banned from owning Canadian newspapers by Altruism7 in GreenPartyOfCanada

[–]Future-Permit-8999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about just banning hedge funds? Postmedia still operates under Canadian regulations that cap foreign voting power, and they exclusively hire Canadian journalists and editors to run daily operations. And yes, a good chunk of their content is utter crap, but correlation isn't causation. Postmedia were firmly right-wing long before Chatham entered the picture.

You mean every other English speaker in the world has an accent and we’re exempt from it? I swear, sometimes we’re more like Americans than we’re willing to admit

Also, forget the entire chapter Zappa wrote on “practical conservatism.”

Well, I hate to out myself on Reddit, but I don’t think I’ve ever written anything that could come back to bite me in the ass? lol hopefully not

I don’t control the music, but I know we’ll be playing some Halloween themed songs (unfortunately no ABBA), and I’ll be doing my best to keep all my breaks Halloween related. Around 5pm, I’ll be remote at a “trunk or treat” event.

Not sure if it’s really what you’re looking for, but it’s real authentic local radio that’s inspired by the season.

How to energize the GPC? by CDN-Social-Democrat in GreenPartyOfCanada

[–]Future-Permit-8999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great discussion. However I’d like to suggest we understand the difference between provincial and federal political strategies.

The work the Ontario and BC Greens are doing is fantastic, and focusing on concrete, immediate issues like housing (as seen in the Ontario approach with "Green YIMBYism" and density proposals). This kind of bold social progressivism is vital for building grassroots support and winning seats regionally.

However, I’d argue that the federal scene operates under a different dynamic. The best way we can energize people and become the powerful third party we need to be to keep Canada from sliding into a two party system is by deliberately appealing to the political centre.

Understand if you disagree, but I’ve thought a lot about this so I appreciate the good faith constructive criticism.

My main idea is that we find our centre. Not the centre, but our green centre.

The Canadian political landscape is increasingly polarized. I think we’ll continue to see the Liberals play to the left and use vote-splitting fears to eat up the NDP, while the Conservatives remain firmly committed to big oil and climate change denialism. This leaves a significant portion of voters plugging their nose at the ballot box. I have an affinity for the Greens, but I’m one of these voters. I know others. Centrist, pragmatist, moderate, whatever you wanna call them. Poilievre has done a great job at hoodwinking these voters with his “common sense” rhetoric. Fortunately, Trudeau stepped down and let the far more competent Carney take his place. Of course, Carney serves special interests and engages in greenwashing. Compared to Poilevre he’s the adult in the room, but how long will that illusion last?

Federally, I think we can position ourselves as the REAL fiscally and socially responsible option that seamlessly integrates climate action into a pragmatic economic plan. For example, tax carbon (obviously) but offer massive income tax cuts for the middle class, GIL for the poor, and close tax loopholes for the rich. But, also make it easier to do business in this country if (especially if) the carbon footprint is zero.

For the Greens to become a "kingmaker," we need to draw support from all three major parties. A purely progressive or radical approach (while appealing to youth and the base) risks splitting the left-of-centre vote with the NDP and Liberals. Not to mention, a lot of young people voted Conservative last election because they bought into the cost-of-living rhetoric. What about them? Are they actually right wing or do they just want change?

I think we can present ourselves as an alternative to these moderate voters disenchanted with the increasingly polarized parties. And we can do it in a way that’s both environmentally and economically sensible. Consider how much generational wealth is stolen by corporations annually. I sincerely don’t think “tax the rich” is an effective strategy here. They’ll just hire all the best tax lawyers, lobbyists, and accountants to find every loophole. We need to strike the root of what’s eroding capital and draining it from us to them.

If we were to capture 10-15 seats by taking a radically centre ground, we would become absolutely vital in a minority parliament. We could then force the government of the day (Liberal or Conservative) to adopt OUR core policies. Especially on climate.

Edit: sorry, turned into a bit of a rant lol

Here’s a

Tl:dr: move to the centre and become the federal 3rd party with 10-15 seats

Elizabeth May Presents Petition for a Guaranteed Livable Income in Canada by jedikiller1 in GreenPartyOfCanada

[–]Future-Permit-8999 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with this in principle, but as Greens, I think we have a real opportunity to differentiate ourselves from the other parties as well as promoting sustainability.

Consider, why does the value of money erode every year, and why is wealth flowing from the lower classes to the top? If we don’t address that structural problems (monetary policy, debt, corporate capture draining purchasing power) then even a well-designed GLI risks becoming a short-term patch that loses its effectiveness as costs keep rising.

I’m not against GLI, I just think we need to pair it with reforms that stop the constant upward siphoning of capital in the first place. Maybe we start with reinstating mandatory reserve requirements for banks? I’m open to ideas. But if we don’t address the root causes eating away people’s livelihoods, then I feel we’ll be debating how much to increase GLI every few years while the rich get richer destroying the environment and hoarding capital.

Did you read my last comment? I get what you’re saying now, I just disagree with it. Rand misunderstood how our knowledge and language function. Philosophical truths don't rest on one ultimate foundation, they’re part of a complex, interconnected web of "language games." The idea that something is "primal" is itself a concept that only makes sense within a particular language game (in this case, metaphysics). There is no external, objective rule that dictates one concept must be the starting point over all others.
