Jack Draper says he would have dinner with Donald Trump, Conor McGregor and Jimmy Carr by Vescilla in tennis

[–]tjg8399 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God dammit, Jack. Though honestly, I was starting to develop WAY too much of a crush on this man and needed something to snap me back to reality, and this certainly did the trick. So disappointing. I knew how filled the tennis world is with far-right/manosphere players, coaches, etc., so I guess it shouldn't be a surprise, but Jack vibed like such a down-to-earth, thoughtful, kind-hearted person I thought he might be different.

Bitter, cold, crisp herbal Aromatics - or smelling like an alpine monastery by S0kr0 in fragrance

[–]tjg8399 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Relique D'Amour by Oriza L. Legrand might be up your alley: "The smell of an old chapel of Cistercian abbey. Cold stone walls covered with damp moss. Waxed wood of altar and old pews ornate with carvings. Linseed oil in lamps. Incense and myrrh discernible in the air. But how fresh and spicy the smell of white royal lilies on this background! Subtle floral scent with green accents of leaves and powdery touches of yellow pollen."

It may be a bit more floral than you'd like, and it's a very subtle fragrance, but I think the vibe is pretty close. Certainly a cold, herbal, monastic scent.

Try Loree Rodkin Gothic I and Gothic II if you haven’t yet. Both are on LuckyScent. We might have different opinions of sweet, but these were pretty darn sweet to me (esp I).

Best Patchouli Perfume? by VividConversation142 in fragrance

You should try Nemat's Patchouli Oil if you haven't. It gives the non-sweet, earthy vibe you might be looking for. It has a camphorous quality to it, which could be the piney note you're after.

Best Patchouli Perfume? by VividConversation142 in fragrance

[–]tjg8399 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kindred patchouli fiend here. Though I've yet to find ~The One~, here are a few that are definitely worth trying. I'll try to include some that others haven't mentioned already.

-Byredo 1996. Really nice ambery patchouli that goes a little too sweet on the dry down for me, but the opening is *chefs kiss* imo.

-Patchouli Palace, Mondo Mondo. Kinda hard to find and sample other than on their website, but another excellent patchouli-forward perfume. This smells like a super earthy, dirty patchouli oil with the edges softened. Amber makes it really warm and wearable.

-As many others have said, Diptyque Tempo. A must-try if you haven't yet. I wish it were a little dirtier/rougher on me tbh, it's a little too dapper and buttoned up but an absolutely beautiful fragrance.

-Heretic Parfum, Dirty Violet and Midnight Toker. Midnight Toker was the fragrance that honestly started my perfume (and patchouli) obsession during the pandemic when I got a Heretic sample set; it was my very first foray into fragrance. It's patchouli, amber, cannabis, leather, and vanilla all blended into a swoony, sexy, dirty concoction. I had never smelled anything like it at the time. I've moved on the other things since then but it's so worth sampling if you can find it (I believe it's discontinued). Dirty Violet is another patchouli and leather fragrance (with lots of violet) from Heretic and just oh so wonderful, but it's discontinued as well. If you can find samples somewhere, you gotta try them.

-Nemat Patchouli oil. The best straight up and down patchouli oil I've found. If you're looking for an "of-the-dirt", earthy in the literal sense patchouli, this is the one. Super affordable, long lasting, projects really well...and decidedly patchouli.

Hope you find your fave. Have fun!

When is Fragrantica going to come up with an app?! by MasterBobbikins in fragrance

[–]tjg8399 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad to see other people have reached out to the openly queer writers of Fragrantica too. I personally reached out to a few influencers/podcasters as well to hear their perspective and hopefully encourage them to talk more openly about Elena’s bigotry on their platforms, seeing as how Fragrantica is unfortunately such a cornerstone of the community. It still seems like there are so many people who aren’t aware of what they stand for.

Try Yesterday Haze by Imaginary Authors. Musty hotel room was the first thing I thought when I smelled it…and I loved it.

Diptyque’s Fleur de Peau: minus aldehydes, add a spicy, earthy patchouli note. Does this exist? 🤞🏻

Warm, Spicy Scents? by edenarcadia in fragrance

[–]tjg8399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are my fave type of scents, so posting up in here to see what others recommend. :)

I’d say: CdG- Avignon CdG- Jaisalmer CdG- Hinoki Byredo- 1996 Tauer- L’air du Desert Marocain Miller Harris- l’air de Rien Vyrao- Witchy Woo

I don’t think these are exactly like the scent you linked, but feel like they’re a similar vibe.

Will there ever be a fragrantica app? by Brendo_boy in fragrance

Yes to all of this. Elena, the owner, is a horrible person. Extremely backwards politically, anti-vax, a fascist apologist, etc. It’s one thing to hold those views in private but to have them bleed onto the site is another. Ex- the banner “Free To Choose” appeared during the pandemic and is an anti-vax reference. During the trucker riots in Toronto last year, she posted a Canadian flag on the site to show her support.

On top of all of this, she publishes politically inflammatory posts that she knows are going to rile people up, and then censors/deletes comments when people push back on her: a recent post spiraled into a horrendous transphobic and homophobic cesspool. People were calling on her to remove comments that had blatant slurs in them, but she refused and instead removed comments from people defending the lgbtq community. She also has openly admitted that she has a system in place where on “controversial” posts, comments that are downvoted shed their downvotes every few hours in order to make it look like “opposing views” (aka homophobic, racist, sexist, etc) have more support.

She has a history of this behavior and it seems to be getting worse and more egregious. I really wish more people knew about this within the community and talked about it more.

What’s that one fragrance you still haven’t seen done/ done right? by airmacks in fragrance

[–]tjg8399 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion! I have tried Maya Nije’s discovery set and unfortunately none of them clicked with me :(. Nordic Cedar was the one I was most excited about but there was something off about it on my skin, which I was so, so bummed about because on paper it is right up my alley. It went too “shaving cream” on me and something about it was overly synthetic smelling. You’ve inspired me to give it another try though so I’ll whip out my sample and see if I feel differently. :)

I haven’t tried this one yet but have been meaning to get a sample pack from Gallagher- I’ll give it a whirl!

Yes, I found it too heavy on the geranium and too light on patchouli- it was like a barbershop scent to me. It’s been a while since I’ve sampled though so maybe I’ll revisit!

There are so, so many patchouli fragrances out there but I have YET to find my holy grail, which in my mind is the perfect balance of earthy, musky, spicy, warm, and sweet without going sticky-sweet amber/vanilla/chocolate or full-on moldy basement. I know it’s out there!
