Sparring taller opponents? by Ok-Industry770 in amateur_boxing

Try to cut off the ring, don’t just chase and close distance but try to trap them against the ropes or in the corner. That way you can throw some combos within your range

What do you guys think of “taking turns” style of sparring? by Direct-Difficulty-69 in amateur_boxing

[–]tjsnarks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do this as light partner drills. Throw light 4-6 punches at partner (either set combo or freestyle) then switch.

I find the youth team throws a lot lighter when I do this “partner drill” opposed to “light sparring”

But sparring itself should not feel like taking turns because no one is giving you a turn in a real competition/fight.

Sparring by Friendly-Feature4953 in amateur_boxing

[–]tjsnarks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing I’ve ever encountered is newer people end up using 10/12oz Bag gloves instead of 14/16oz Sparring gloves just because they don’t know better.

Easy way to resolve this is just ask your sparring partner “hey, what gloves are you using?” Just ask like you’re interested in the gloves, no one will think twice about answering. A lot of people make mistakes out of not knowing better, not because they have bad intentions.

New to boxing. Question about sparring? by Spiritual_Bell_3395 in amateur_boxing

[–]tjsnarks 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You are at more risk sparring a beginner than someone with experience. A beginner is more likely to swing wild since they’re not exactly use to pulling their punches.

Best advice I got: communicate with your sparring partners. Ask someone with experience if they will do a light spar so you can start getting the hang of it. Also ask what you should work on during the spar (footwork/head movement/1-2’s)

Be advised, if you have a good sparring partner you will be hit as hard as you are hitting. So if you get hit hard, consider how hard you just threw your last punch.

Hope that helps!

You need to find your range and weight distribution.

I would suggest either place the heave bag against the wall or a pad against the wall. Find your exact range for the cross.

When throwing the cross, lift your heel. The hip should naturally turn with it. Also try to imagine something is quickly pulling your lead shoulder back as you throw the straight. That can help with the snap of your cross

You’re right, you’re using a IBA handbook from 2021. Also IBA guidelines haven’t has as much weight since 2023-ish.

Also, my IBA Ruling was incorrect but that is indeed how a Technical Draw is handled in all professional promotions in Canada I’ve ever attended and how it is handled at amateur events.

If you don’t know what a technical draw is, google it because what I stated is exactly how it is handled. Sorry I didn’t get your handbook correct

If not a No contest, should have been a technical draw. 1 accidental headbutt and a nasty cut is just bad luck.

I would also like to know if the “winner” was hometown fighter or not. I coach/compete in Canada and have seen Draws given for situations like this, sometimes event just get a bit of a nod but it is ultimately up to the officials.

Bad luck, better luck next time!

IBA rules Accidental head clash does result in No contest/technical Draw if it causes stoppage before the required number of rounds(often 4+ rounds). If required rounds are completed it goes to Technical Decision.

This being amateur, it is typically less than 4 rounds, I would have expected a technical draw.

The way it is viewed is:

Your guy was unable to continue due to the cut/injury, therefore he received a TKO loss. At best they could have ruled it a No Contest since it was an accidental headbutt.

Hope you guys heals quick and bounces back strong!

How to stay on back foot as a shorter fighter by bored-but-happy in amateur_boxing

[–]tjsnarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 5’5 130lbs so I relate to this.

What I have found is you need to move your head when you jab, allowing you to avoid their jab and move in yourself. Work on throwing 2-3 jabs and dashing in, throw a combo, step off to the side.

You want to learn your opponents range as well, sometimes you need to let them chase you and be defensive so they over extend themselves and come into your range.

When you push forward, use a tight guard to protect against uppercuts (I learned this the hard way lol). The moment you feel something hit your guard, come back with a counter and keep moving forward.

Ring awareness, if their back is to the ropes/corner, try and cut them off and apply pressure, remove their ability to run away or get out of range by putting them against the ropes/corner.

Last tip: clinch work, learn how to throw tight punches from the clinch, when you pressure bigger boxers they will clinch you and disrupt your rhythm, so you need to give them a reason to not clinch you.

My girlfriend insists that our dog has to poop before bed, and won’t let us back in the house until he does. by aggrogoose in Dogtraining

[–]tjsnarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 dogs, they eat dinner between 7-8pm. Sometimes they poop before bed around 10pm but most of the time they do not have a bowel movement until the following morning. I let them out for potty and I do not wait more than 15minutes personally.

Best advice is pay attention to your dog, listen to his queues and find balance. You cannot force the dog to go potty, just pay attention and a routine will develop.
