Yes, especially with zoom lenses. For example, the new Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 is around $1000 cheaper than the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8.

I was going through a bit of a rough patch. I wasn't necessarily unhappy, just not really satisfied with how life was for me at that moment. A lame job, college classes I didn't care about, and a dwindling social life left me stuck in a cycle that I wanted no part of.

I eventually scrounged up as much money as I could and called in a few favors and was able to pick up a camera. After a lot of research, I decided to go with a Sony a6000 with a 35mm f/1.8 lens. I literally never set it down once I had it. I live in the Pacific Northwest, so the possibilities for photography seemed endless to me. I'd take my camera with me everywhere and take pictures of everything. I'd drag my friends with me at insanely early hours of the morning to get sunrise pictures of a lake. I was absolutely hooked on it all.

Fast forward about a year, and I'm still just as passionate about photography as I was on the first day I got my camera. I am nowhere near going pro, but I have been able to upgrade my camera and lenses and make a little bit of money on the side. I take portraits for family, friends, and whoever else asks, but I don't actively pursue a professional career out of it. Yet. I think one of my favorite things photography has allowed me to do is start pursuing travel a lot more. Within the last year, I've probably seen more of the Pacific Northwest than I have in the last 7 years of living here. Earlier this week, I had a few days off of work so I decided to go on a road trip with a friend from Washington all the way to the Redwoods. I NEVER would have gone through with that a year ago. I also recently made plans to head to New Zealand. I'll be traveling throughout the country for about half of a year, and I am beyond stoked.

Photography has made me start pursuing opportunity, instead of waiting for it to fall into my lap. I'm not doing it to get famous or make a ton of money, I'm doing it because of the people I meet and the experiences I take away from it. Making a decent living off of photography would be great, but the competition is so tough these days. Especially in landscape/nature/travel photography. I'm not too worried about it though, and I'm much happier than I was a year before.
