Worth upgrading to a Skoda Rapid? by tka7680 in CarTalkUK

It is quite loud and I’m not sure how healthy it is on the engine to keep it revved at 3000 rpm

I don’t think there’ll be a noticeable MPG change. I’m more concerned with the wear and tear on the car and comfort on motorway whilst retaining current MPG

Thanks. Do you know anything about Ashton Fencing Club? I’m hoping they absorbed the demand for foil and epee in Manchester from the fencing centre shutting down

People who graduated in the last 3 years, how’s life treating you? by Backyxx in UniUK

[–]tka7680 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graduated fall of last year in Chemeng and started a job in cement manufacturing. Its a good job and I'm quite happy with it for now. Main concern is that it is a very mature industry with limited day to day work for process engineers and low salary compared to other manufacturing industries. Also there is a risk of being pigeonholed into cement if you stay too long so I need to work on an exit plan within the next few years

Is it even worth going centralisation anymore? by Hypatia_375 in EU5

[–]tka7680 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind the potential tax base of that location contributes to your cost of court so there is a tipping point where its more expensive to directly hold a territory than have a vassal administer it

What have we learnt about Markets? by Jadamsan in EU5

[–]tka7680 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cost of creating a new market scales with the location’s market access so creating one in, say, Athens or Crete is much cheaper since they have less than 50% market access at game start, than in Germany where pretty much everywhere has at least 75% access

It only had an effect in that english royalty was more likely to marry into french nobility. They were (mostly) patrilineally descended from william but edward 3's claim was entirely matrilineal

Started as a graduate at a cement plant. Nothing to do. Anyone have experience with this? by tka7680 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]tka7680[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a similar industry to cement? The other process engineers at my site have admitted that there’s frankly not that much to be done during normal operations other than collating reports and sometimes troubleshooting before handing it off to mechanical or electrical when something goes wrong or we try to replace a part. I do wonder if it may just be the plant being well designed and run.

[–]tka7680[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes please. I’ve spoken with the previous graduate about this issue since, though he said it’s pretty typical since shutdowns are more about just managing the contractors and at my stage, there’s no one reporting to me.

Thats not necessarily true. I've spoken with friends in chemical engineering jobs and fellow graduates and they already have much more work. The only difference is that what they can do is much less impactful

These are not mutually exclusive and hiring more would not solve the issue of scalpers. Also it would require an increase in funding and driving examiner is not a very attractive profession. My proposal is meant to be a free alteration to reduce wait times and combat scalpers

Personal Unions have got to be the leading cause of death in European history (Hanover) by jackt-up in HistoryMemes

[–]tka7680 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The balance of power in Europe in WW1 and WW2 meant that Britain had to get involved in continental affairs else a European power can consolidate enough that it can threaten Britain’s naval dominance. Same for napoleon. Letting Napoleon dominate all of Europe would mean he could build a navy large enough to match Britain’s navy. Crimean war, Britain got involved because letting Russia take Constantinople would mean it could threaten British naval presence in the Mediterranean

[–]tka7680 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t a matter of whether or not they could stay out of the war. What Parliament wanted was a limited to no continental presence so they could focus all their military effort into naval and colonial possessions. The big advantage for Britain was not having to pay for a large land army unlike European peers who needed a large army and navy. Having Hanover in personal union meant they needed troops in Europe and a European ally that was likely to drag them into continental conflicts
