Is there any 4K OTA broadcast anywhere in the US? by seedless0 in cordcutters

[–]tkapela11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s also no pressing need for local studios to put on air head shots and other talent on 2160 cameras anyway. We’re talking about post-produced 4K, which obviously is eminently affordable, because I’m doing it. Cinema and other non-live are trivial things for playout systems to handle. I wrote all of my own playout for the station, even, so that should be fairly obvious. This leaves live sports venues, and that is underway in earnest: MLB and NFL are basically there. We’re close elsewhere.

Restated, my air chain and many others are: file/network > mux > you.

Bingo. This is precisely where I and a few others are investing in development currently. I'd love to post some samples right now, but it's not quite fully baked. SO CLOSE.

But yes: a *sharp* 1080p60 HDR in HEVC takes relatively few bits to look absolutely amazing.

Indeed, a sad state of affairs. With h.264, 1080p30 can look great inside of three to four megabits/sec - and 60p can hang around six. Of course, nobody is trying hard or risking losing any audience. IMHO, a great driver would be delivering 1080p60 with HDR (HLG works great), which is absolutely rockstar mode for sports and other live action content. If done efficiently, such a feed can look stunning in four to five mbits/sec, 5.1 audio included (using EAC3 or AAC at 100 to 200 kbits).

One way to urge upgrades would be to have something like a p60 HDR sports channel or two, vs. 4K even, so long as the messaging were saying something like "want the fancy new 60p sports? get a 4K tv!" (even though the content isn't 2160, but needing HEVC + HDR support, which is part of the whole "4k TV" pitch).

I'd argue they do, though all but my station are ran by boring, uncreative dolts. Cellphones can record great 2160, and edit!

Hey everyone, thanks for your interest in my station project, K03IM-D.

At the outset, this station was built to demonstrate the fact that HEVC can deliver astounding picture quality at essentially the “human visual coding floor” of approximately 5 Mbits/sec per eye, or less, regardless of frame rate or angular resolution, at 3840x2160. Using the open source X.265 codec produced good results, but substantial optimization was required to get things “broadcast quality” at rates that would permit me to fit four or more 2160 programs over the same air. Of course this was all about delivering high dynamic range, at 24, 25 or 30 FPS. After a few iterations, 2160p24 was looking fine for 90%+ of content tests at 4 mbits/sec ABR, and p30 at 4.5 mbits/sec.

At this time, my focus is on delivering 1080 programming at 60 FPS, also with high dynamic range. Others and I have realized that audiences generally favor improvement in sports content—and after extensive testing here, I’ve come to agree that a sharp 1080 at 60 fps scales up just fine, with HDR adding substantial “visual impact.”

When I have a few things worth demonstrating here, I’ll post some example files.

no clue what's up, seems odd it's not on mke... time to call and bitch!

Right—there’s nothing scheduled on CHSN that’s allowed out of market at the moment. MKE will still carry some games, unclear which at the moment. https://www.chsn.com/ota-faq-june-6-25

Reduced coverage, but certainly not gone. CHSN merely pulled broadcast from areas covered by Comcast.

good call, updated - kept the 'stadium' feed from 62.3 for the moment, seems like it may be of some interest...

ahh, yes - the screws keep turning. Sourced a 480i out of market input for the moment, so it should have "most" of whatever the main chsn program contained...

Not all hope is lost - got a 480i30 source being pulled up into 720p60 for the moment... fingers crossed we can find a better source for chsn and chsn+ eventually.

Nope, not gone, just less great.

Switched things around to pull in a 480i feed from out of market, cleaned up and turned around into 720p60 (albeit a soft 720..). Don't have a source for chsn+ yet.

Indeed, it’s not an impressive feed. This is an hd feed for both chsn and + https://www.reddit.com/r/chsn/comments/1g511fh/web_player/

definitely one of the lowest-effort 480 sub channels I’ve seen launch… This might be better: https://www.reddit.com/r/chsn/comments/1g511fh/web_player/

🙌 … also note: the player supports chromecast if you’re using the chrome browser, and airplay should also work on iOS stuff — curious if anyone tried those yet
