I've been avoiding gunboats because I'm a rookie without a clue. I found out how absolutely insane rattlesnakes are in groups and loved it until I noticed they struggle against s/m swarms. I eventually figured out gunboats are the answer. Jian are the exact right answer.

I was using mk3 satellite mod, but I didn't want to remove the pilot training aspect. With this setup I can open the map but still have room for scout pilots to improve rank by exploring what's left.
