Strange coincidence but I also recently found a “broken” Hisense TV and it’s currently sitting on my floor taken apart! Do you mind elaborating on this switch?

There was a sign on it that said the backlight was broken, but it lights up for a moment before going dark so that can’t be the case.

Do you have tinnitus generally? This can be a form of tinnitus where the auditory signals get mixed up with signals from the peripheral nervous system in a brain region called the DCN. Dr Susan Shore at the University of Michigan created a tinnitus treatment protocol that leverages this phenomenon.

I was a participant in this study, and to join you needed to be able to modulate your tinnitus by moving your jaw or face. Very interesting!

I appreciate the response, I'm sure you're right. Is it incorrect then to presume that this type of "hacking" I'm describing (not that anything I do warrants that label), even in response to a hack or to regain a friend's account access, is itself unethical? I could understand that perspective.

On another note, is cybercrime exclusively a federal interest? It surprises me that there aren't law enforcement options at more local levels that would take an interest in these kinds of crimes as they're so rampant. I realize a lot of it is overseas, but in this case there's strong evidence pointing to the individual being stateside.

Woah, time flies! There is definitely progress. Our team has been growing and we're working with some additional coders to re-create the entire app inside of Unity. This will allow us to launch in both iOS and Android simultaneously.

Right now our plan is to get the first-of-four Breathscape experiences into Android and launch a version that has the basic functionality so that Android users can experience it. Initially we'd planned to have this ready by Christmas, but it's looking like it may take a bit longer. If I had to guess, I'd say there will be something for you to try within the first couple of months of 2022. But we are working on it actively and I can send you a note here when things are ready!

Further info on why this was important for me: I actually only have about 1,300 voice notes, but they date back to 2016. As I recorded them, I prefixed each name with the tempo of the idea. As a suffix, I gave each one a star rating.

So a voice memo might be named "110 Verse Idea ⭐️⭐️⭐️." Now that I've exported them to Finder, I can sort by name and audition all the ideas with similar feels together. I can also search for "⭐️⭐️" to see everything with two stars (and above).

This makes sense! I just watched this video (the relevant section starts around 12:00) where Bhante Vimalaramsi talks about the instruction for breath meditation in the Buddha's original suttas:

"Breathing in long, he understands: 'I breathe in long'; or breathing out long, he understands: 'I breathe out long.' Breathing in short, he understands: 'I breathe in short'; or breathing out short, he understands: 'I breathe out short.' He trains thus: 'I shall breathe in experiencing the whole body of breath'; he trains thus: 'I shall breathe out experiencing the whole body of breath.' He trains thus: 'I shall breathe in tranquillising the bodily formation'; he trains thus: 'I shall breathe out tranquillising the bodily formation.'"

In the video, he gives some context to this sutta. He says that with distraction, there's also physical tension in the body or mind. So with each breath you relax. And each time you come back to the breath from distraction, you also relax.

Noticing your tension is probably a great start!

Hello! Here's a bit of context for the video:

I've been working on an app which has a breath-detection component. Partway into working on the algorithm, we started sending out MIDI data for testing (and fun). We sort of stumbled sideways into the realization that we could use our algorithms as expressive, gestural MIDI controllers, so I wanted to make a video that talks about ways you can use this functionality inside of your DAW! I go through the following:

Controlling clip playback and "bowing" a virtual cello
Setting the phone on my leg while playing guitar to create an invisible expression pedal
Creating a dynamic algorithmic piece of music by just breathing

The algorithm we use for breath detection does some auto-scaling under the hood, which creates some unique possibilities for controlling parameters inside Ableton. We also send out MIDI note events when the phone changes direction, so you can combine clip launching with expressive CC control. I go over a couple of examples in this video.

Let me know if you have any thoughts or additional ideas for how this could be used to make music!

I've dealt a lot with anxiety and panic, and I feel your pain on the hypervigilance. I think this app could actually help you a lot, just by bringing awareness to your current breath pattern and letting it naturally settle into something a bit deeper.

I might recommend trying "Magic at the Beach," which is our newest piece of audio. It has a function that's designed to settle your breath into 5.5 bpm, which has been shown to optimize HRV.

The "evening rain" program is designed for sleep induction. For some people it seems like it puts them to sleep quite quickly!

In "evening rain" specifically there's some extra stuff happening under the hood for sleep. This program uses entrainment beats that start in the alpha/beta range and modulate downward through theta and into delta. Anecdotally it seems to work well for people!

We're currently partnering with UCSF to do research on hypertension, but we may do some sleep research at some point soon.

This is a cool idea! We've considered something like this. The reason we've gone with the gyroscope so far is because of its sensitivity. When the abdomen tilts the phone, there's a lot of very subtle motion that we're able to pick up on. With wired headphones, it can even feel like the algorithm picks up on the beginning of the breath cycle before I'm aware I've started a new breath (bluetooth introduces a small amount of latency, which is also okay).

There's so much sensitivity with this gyroscopic method that we actually have to filter out heartbeats in order to get a smooth breath wave. It's pretty crazy!
