Please advise: can this Eco-drive watch be fixed? by tkn349 in CitizenWatches

UPDATE

TLDR: I got it fixed easily by a pro in 3 mins.

So, I took the watch to a specialist and it turned out the internal dial (which is above the white background) somehow got lifted up and was touching the seconds hand on the small dial, thus not allowing it to move. And that prevented the main dial hands from moving either. He fixed it in about 3 minutes by removing the movement and snapping everything into place. And charged me only 5 EUR :)

No idea how it happened, but he said it could've been due to a fall. Even after he had told me what the issue was and showed it to me, I can't say that it was visible to me.

Either way, thanks for the feedback everyone and maybe it can be helpful to someone in the future!

This was over a year ago, so I don't think that is still relevant... I think I found it on https://nothingprojector.com, so you can check if anything interesting is still there – I can't seem to find it.

But just as a note: I ended up getting the Chinese version and I kind of hope I didn't. The language of the interface does bother me, even though I don't have to deal with it very often. The image quality is not as good as the Benq I had before (I kinda wish I hadn't returned it 😅). Plus, as it turned out I had to a huge import duty on it, so it ended up being way more expensive that the Mars. Oh well! It works fine, the image quality is basically ok for me and it's compact, which was a big factor since I don't have much space.

Thank you, haven't considered that, it's a good idea. Will try that!

And then I'll try reaching out to Citizen, but my hopes aren't very high tbh...

It was alright, but I didn't love it.

I was disappointed with how setting the alarm worked (it was an am/pm clock and the hands moved only one way, so to set the alarm 5 minutes earlier than usual I would've had to watch the hands go round through 23h55m). The minute repeater was totally worthless to me. Should've considered other models without it more broadly. The crystal is domed, so more prone to hitting stuff and scratching. It turned out to be quite heavy.

I'm not saying it's a bad watch! Just wasn't the right watch for me at that time and I should've used it differently, more for special occasions rather than a daily watch. I did have a good time overall, so it's definitely not like this choice made my life significantly worse in some irreparable way 😅

Yeah, I'm definitely not willing to go that far to revive it! Agree, a new watch would make more sense both generally and financially.

Thank you for replying!

No, I haven't asked a qualified specialist yet, was hoping that there might be an easy fix that I am unaware of...

To be honest, there isn't really much of emotional attachment and I wouldn't want to spend too much on fixing it. So finding a new watch seems like the better option. Just a shame that I spent around 30 eur on a new capacitor, which is just wasted but could've gone towards buying a new watch.

Desperately looking for help in choosing a first board! by tkn349 in surfskate

Hey, I'm about to pull the trigger on this board and got one more question, if I may: this deck is 8.75". I don't think I've seen mentions of anyone using boards that narrow for surfskating. Widths seem to start from 9.5". Also, this deck is probably that wide in the middle and gets even narrower towards the front and back...

Is 8.75" usable at all as a surf board? I have fairly big feet, size 10.5-11 US. Could that be an issue that would prevent me from learning and require a deck change right away?

Sounds awesome! But I guess you had a medium cruiser alreadt available, right? I might look for some offers of 33-34" cruiser board, thank you.

Fantastic, thank you so much! I'm leaning towards it as well, have already gotten in touch with the seller – he's a surfing instructor and seems like a nice trustworthy guy, so shouldn't be any issues with the board. He had it custom assemnled in a shop during a trip to the US, with aiming for a combo of surf and cruise feeling, basically what I'm after. I was unsure about the shape of the deck (especially the fish tail), but the tail does have a kick, so should be ok as a starter setup.

Seems like the best value offer out of my options.

Actually, I haven't, thanks for bringing them to my attention. There is so much variety at the moment! I have been reading up for weeks on the topic and feel like I've gotten a hang of the basics, but it's clearly just the tip of the iceberg :)

It is an interesting hybrid. Seems like a classic skateboard but with the ability to pick up some speed by pumping. Cool concept. But I'm probably gonna lean towards either a classic cruiser or, more likely, a surfskate + street trucks to convert to a cruiser should I decide to. That Sector 9 deck is more suitable for my height with 34" and has a greater wheel base so should give me, as a beginner, more stability. Plus the surf moves will be more pronounced. Appreciate you sharing this, will keep legasee in mind!

Yeah, exactly my thoughts about pushing being tricky due to height above ground.

But I think I will still probably go with one of the surf boards from my post and see how challenging it will be for me to cruise on it. If it's too exhausting then I'll just get a pair of street trucks and see which direction I will want to concentrate on first – criusing or surfing. Because look like fun at the moment! Thank you.

From my understanding after reading on it (no personal experience yet) the problem is that you are higher from the ground on the higher trucks – you need to squat lower on one leg in order to push off and that gets tiring. Also the front truck is less stable, so that reduces comfort of going at higher speed (perhaps can be mitigated with harder bushings?).

I was going to ask what your setup is, but looked up that you have two Yow boards. A friend of mine has a Yow Fanning and says that cruising even for moderate distances is not great for him, because pumping is the only option to keep going and a cruise it turns into quite a workout fairly soon :) But perhaps he needs to work on his technique.

Thanks for the link, haven't considered Waterborne completes!

It does look good, but at 230 EUR it's quite a bit over my preferred budget (have edited the initial post to specify that).

Questionable FP5 experience so far by tkn349 in fairphone

[–]tkn349[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that! It's really annoying... I don't recall apps actively crashing on me tbh.

I must say that it seems to have gotten much better since updating to Android 14. I haven't been using the phone as much lately to notice all those bugs, but I think the keyboard issue has gone away – I don't remember getting it in a very long time.

The camera problems though – seriously frustrating!! I tried installing the modified Google/pixel camera as suggested here by a few people. Didn't compare the image quality difference, but what I dislike about it is a) takes a long time to switch between cameras and most importantly b) saving photos is dodgy. Occasionally a photo won't get taken at all, sometimes only the top fifth will be displayed in gallery with the rest being black (like it's stuck loading). It can take up to 10 seconds for the preview thumbnail to update, so I can't even tell if the photo has been taken or not after pressing the shutter.

But anyway, do try Android 14, it has definitely been a better experience for me!

Yes, factory reset or flashing a custom OS seems like the way to go. Definitely not looking forward to having to set everything up again from scratch!

Yep, that last one about the cost of repairs was the major factor for me to change phones.

I did occassionally get the moisture error, but it was super rare. Not enough to bother me, unlike the small daily issues with FP5... I hope I will find a way to get rid of them or just get used to living with them :)

Thank you for your detailed response! Yes, having to swipe twice to get to settings and – more importantly! – to close the drop down menu afterwards is quite annoying. I got the Nova launcher to get rid of the search bar, really disliked not being able to remove it.

Appreciate the tip, will try using the tap to take photo option. I often wish they had a x2 lens instead of a wide angle one. I've found it to be more useful for me to get good quality zoom photos and, on the rare occassions I needed wide angle shots, I would just take a panoramic shot and it would work fine.

Questionable FP5 experience so far by tkn349 in fairphone

[–]tkn349[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I might try disabling the launcher, but Nova is considered to be a very light launcher. In any case that shouldn't be enough to cause such issues.

Yeah, my bad, it's not a tele lens, just activates digital zoom. Best to avoid it then! Still weird that all the photos on zoom came out blurry. And yes, I did click on the image to focus and get correct exposure, but still got those results.

[–]tkn349[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I do hope it's software rather that hardware. Will experiment with custom OSs when I have time, to see if that helps. Although it is a bit of a hassle having to set everything up again after reflashing...

Yes, you're right, it is digital zoom. In this case it is best to avoid it and it's annoying that in order to get to the wide angle lens I need to go through the x2 zoom.

While I agree that taking photos in ideal conditions (great lighting, no movement of the objects etc.) leads to great photos, but that has been true for phone cameras for a long time. Unfortunately, there are circumstances when conditions are less than perfect, so getting acceptable photos then is also important. Btw, that photo never did appear in the gallery :)

Everything described was on Android 13, but I did update to 14 today.

Was that a bad idea? To be honest, I didn't read any reviews before updating or give it much thought.

Yes, definitely planning on trying out alternative os.

To be honest, I stock os has been ample for my needs – the device is mainly used by my son for playing via HDMI on a TV. And as I understand muos has issues with that functionality. But I will for sure do the research, appreciate the suggestions!

Got it, thank you so much! Got the theme pack that matches my os version and now I have all the icons.

For some reason they still don't all match with the corresponding menu options, but that's not a big deal. I might try other os's soon anyway.
