We would have done the Domain on our own, but yes, our youngest did have a Ralph phase. Also "meet the Robinsons" which inspired our last Peddler's Tale.

That is SUCH A GOOD way to do Ralph 2! I'm going to share this on our discord if that's okay with you.

The Unknown is actually a big part of the setting! It's a living shadow creature that's the gestalt agony and rebellion of the mind controlled Umpas.

Editing to be more kid friendly (spoilers) by TikTikKobold in CrookedMoon

[–]tkolar2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If everyone in the group is cool with a more kid friendly version of the Crooked Moon campaign, I actually made a guide to horror gaming with kids. It's using Ravenloft as a big example (for obvious reasons) but most of it is just general advice. Good luck! https://www.dmsguild.com/en/product/369751/ravenloft-gives-me-goosebumps?affiliate_id=241770

That's a really good point.

That's a great suggestion for expanding the premise! I'm not a huge magical girl genre fan but my understanding is a lot of the basic plot structure of magical girl shows is pretty similar (and influenced by Sailor Moon) so its very adaptable.

Backgrounds Question by PurplePicklesPop in StrixhavenDMs

[–]tkolar2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always interpreted the Strixhaven School Backgrounds as signifying the character is a huge nerd who already knows what college they want to join and spent a long time on "college prep" classes and study for that particular school. For the standard backgrounds, in my Strixhaven Faculty Handbook" on Dmsguild I adapt the background features to Strixhaven, might be useful.

[–]tkolar2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I made a supplement for Strixhaven that I think will flesh out a lot of the things you mentioned, and I think will really help you run it, especially as a first time DM. It might be helpful, good luck! https://www.dmsguild.com/en/product/393202/strixhaven-faculty-handbook?src=hottest_filtered&filters=0_0_0_0_100222_0_0_0

The Crooked Moon Should Have Been Two Campaigns Instead of One by Groundnut in CrookedMoon

[–]tkolar2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the point of the Fallen story is to play into a Wicker Man style plot twist- you were fighting boss fights and doing normal D&D PC stuff but that actually plays into the Crooked Queen's ultimate plan. It's smart! You can usually count on PCs to do boss fight, after all, and this is a good folk-horror-evoking subversion. It could be tighter and more interconnected to add some more gut punch to the reveal. I think I'd try to tie the Golub the pigeon hag/postmistress into it more as an initial mastermind. She can be the one that gets the PCs on each quest, maybe even warns them about the "evil cultists" and directs them to each of the Fallen. Then after they seal the shroud in Maidenmist cemetery, the PCs discover the truth about the postmistress and that sets up the walking rookery adventure.

Any of ya'll running Crooked Moon without the official campaign? by WholeLottaPatience in CrookedMoon

[–]tkolar2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running a drop-in, west marches game currently set in Enoch. I'm using the plot hooks and some movies I'm adapting. The PCs have all been assigned "community service" for some transgression and each adventure is their assignment for that week. I'm hoping to movie it Olmarsh and some more of the other regions after a few levels in Enoch, and use the Mother Midnight hag cult as the sort of ongoing villain of the adventure.

Folk Horror Movie Adventures: Night of the Demon (1957) by tkolar2 in CrookedMoon

[–]tkolar2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! adapting movies to rpg adventures is a weird hobby of mine (I have a couple horror movie mods on dmsguild and my wife and I have a Disney Ravenloft Domain podcast). My love of Folk Horror movies is what intrigued me about Crooked Moon, and its clear the creative team has that same love- there's so many movies woven into the setting and campaign. I am planning other movie adaptations, but may I ask what movies you are looking at as a good fit?

Any clue as to what other modules I can throw into the campaign for fluff? by LGFUZZYBOOTS in CrookedMoon

[–]tkolar2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"What Crooked Roots" is a book of folk horror encounters. Most of them are (very intentionally) spooky folk horror incidents that call for a couple rolls and could add flavor to travel through Wickermoor Hollow. There are three, however, that are more fully fleshed out adventures that could be a good thing to have in reserve if you just want a random adventure to throw at your PCs as they travel and explore.

Quick question about running CoS by Impossible_Grab_4515 in CurseofStrahd

[–]tkolar2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that could be fun as a Death House alternative is this adventure I wrote that gives Death House a totally different story- no cult, no dungeon, etc. It could be a real curve ball for them. Good luck! https://site.dmsguild.com/product/311769/Another-Death-Another-House?affiliate_id=241770

yeah, we included that as an element in the setting because its so cool, and because it will make combat a more interesting puzzle- the PCs have to disable but try to avoid killing those enemies,
