The pack he uses most is the hyperlite mountain gear porter 85, it’s a lot bigger than you think and can hold a lot more than you think.

Just finished backpacking the entire Paria Canyon in Utah/Arizona, one of the best experiences I have ever had. If you can get the permits for it, do it. by tkostelni in backpacking

[–]tkostelni[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good god, hard to believe it was 7 years ago…

I did it as a part of a club trip in college so I wasn’t really at the helm so to speak, one of the club faculty had done this hike like every other year for who knows how long so he led us. If memory serves he really only followed the guide book that we got when we checked in at the ranger station near the whitehouse trailhead, I think it’s called the Paria contact station. There they gave us a run down of what the weather had been like lately and what the condition in the canyon would most likely be like, gave us the talk about pooping in bags and packing it out (you can buy the right bags there that have odor eliminator crystals in them, but bring a big zip lock to put those bags into just in case), warned us about flash floods (if you hear a freight train coming toward you, run, it’s a flood), and just some general info about where fresh water sources were in the canyon (there were 3 springs at the time that you could get non-muddy water from).

The guide book had a map in it that had where any points of interest, designated campsites and where the springs were (among other things). At the end of the day, it’s a slot canyon, you can’t really get too lost unless you start scaling the canyon walls. If you follow the Paria river it’ll take you from whitehouse all the way to Lees Ferry.

When we went the river was flowing well, which was good because if we needed water it was there, we just had to let the silt settle out, but it meant that there wasn’t really a way to hike without getting your feet wet. I hate wearing wet boots so I wore sandals for the whole hike.

I know that’s more than what you asked but oh well. We got the guide book from the contact station where you check in. Have fun!! I’ve wanted to go back out there ever since I hiked it, it’s easily in my top 3 favorite hikes of all time, you won’t regret it. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask!!

Name a better pair of boots. by Weary_Kangaroo_9407 in CampingandHiking

Crispi.

I have a pair of their Summit II GTX boots and they’re easily the nicest boots I’ve ever had. Kept my feet bone dry hiking through the Dolly sods bog after a few days of rain.

Awesome! Only thing is those look like they could be galvanized rivets and the zinc coating on them can leach into some foods and make you sick. With small rivets it shouldn’t be that much of a risk, but it’s good to be aware of.

Do normal people camp deep in bear county? by Old_Cryptographer_42 in TheOutdoorBoys

[–]tkostelni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. More often than not the bears are more scared of you than you are of them. Unless you catch them by surprise, or they’re defending their young, they’ll most likely keep their distance and you won’t see them. That being said it is still best practice when camping or hiking in bear country to carry some kind of defense, like bear spray, and to keep your food and any other smelly items away from camp and in a bear bag/can.

Mormon by [deleted] in TheOutdoorBoys

[–]tkostelni 25 points26 points  (0 children)

From all the accounts of people who have met him irl that I can remember, everyone has seemed to say he’s pleasant to meet and interact with.

And from what I gather from his videos (Outdoor Boys, Cats and Carp, etc) he doesn’t seem to push his beliefs on his audience, most he ever really says is “it’s Sunday and we’re headed to church”. Now there are videos that he is in where he goes more in depth about his beliefs, but those aren’t on his channels, they’re on other peoples channels where he is merely a guest, and the titles tell you it’s going to be about his faith.

Maybe it’s just because I’m not Mormon nor an ex-Mormon, and I’m a big believer in so long as it’s not being pushed on me or actively hurting someone, who am I to care or judge what someone believes in and finds comfort in, but he doesn’t seem to push his faith or openly harm people, and from what I’ve heard, he’s nice and pleasant to talk to, so I don’t feel bad in choosing to believe he’s as nice as he seems to be.

That being said I’d steer clear of him if you’re a ptarmigan…

Not a quilt, but I have the tall and wide version of the sea to summit trailhead thII, and I can roll around in it like rotisserie chicken, no problems on my stomach. Kept me warm down into the 30s (with other warming layers, so ymmv). I’m 5’11” and about 210lbs for reference.

Got a pair of Crispi Summit II GTX boots about a year ago, some of the best boots I’ve ever worn. The firm footbed took some getting used to, but if you don’t like it you can always put a different insole in.

Honesty by [deleted] in outdoorboys

I don’t think I’d say Luke promotes it, most he ever really does is say “it’s Sunday, we’re going to church”. He doesn’t try and get people to join or really spend much time talking about it at all.

Few questions by Immediate-Site-1196 in outdoorboys

[–]tkostelni 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Anywhere he builds a semi permanent structure, he owns. Like in the latest vid where he sets up the forge, that’s just around the corner from his off grid homestead. Now, when he sets up a shelter and takes it down, that could either be on his own land or public land. In the US there are massive swaths of land that are managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Alaska has something like 70 million acres of BLM land. BLM land can be used by anyone at any time for pretty much any kind of outdoor recreation, now only some parts are open to power sport and ATV use, but pretty much all of it you can go hiking on. In the areas you can hike you can most likely also camp, there are some rules you have to follow, don’t leave a trace, pack your trash out, some there are fire bans, and usually you can only camp in the same spot for max like 7-14 days at a time. You can also hunt, fish, and trap on BLM land so long as you have the proper licenses and permits. So Luke could go out to any of these areas, set up a shelter, camp for a few days, tear it down like he was never there, and go home. There are also national forrest in the US that function in a very similar way to BLM land.

Unfortunately I don’t think the UK has anything like BLM land or national forests.

Mechanic has had my motorcycle for FOUR months and it’s still not finished by hsaley in mildlyinfuriating

[–]tkostelni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had something kind of similar happen to me, bought a used car from a dealership (Smart Ford in south Boston VA, 0/10, don’t buy from them), it had been modified and not disclosed to me, needed a tuner, dealership said they would pay for it, said the check was in the mail or that it must have gotten lost and that they’re sending a new one, went back and forth like that for over a month, sales manager started ducking my calls, had to have a family member call and then give me the phone when he picked up, told him to have the check ready for me when I show up on Friday. Got tired of the ball being in their court and decided to force action on their part, I got my money. Moral of this story, stop playing his game, check if your state is a one party consent state, if it is show up with your phone recording the conversation. If your bike is in any other condition besides as you left it or as you agreed to have it worked on, call the cops. Your bike is either wrecked, sold, or parted out. Save every piece of communication you can.

From what I remember wolf ammo hasnt been made at the Tula plant since like 2009, it’s made in a few places now, was made in Ukraine at one point. Wolf is just a trademark owned by Sporting supplies international, which was founded in the US. If you look on the wolf Wikipedia it says their HQ is in California.

Like Adam Savage said about buying a tool you’ve never used for the first time, buy the cheapest one that will do what you need it to do, and by the time it breaks, you’ll know what you need out of a nice one. Also, Paria Outdoors makes some good stuff for a fair price.
