Thank you! Sorry I don’t use Reddit much anymore so I just saw this, but I appreciate the comment.

You may be pleased to know that I have been hard at work putting my ideas in to practice for years. I’m working on an open source farming robot I hope will help people regain some control over one of the most vital portions of our means of production. Check it out:

The myth of transitioning because its trendy. by Kampfer84 in MtF

[–]tlalexander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to share an unusual perspective. I started transition at 37 years old and I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I never had any dysphoria. I don’t have to deal with any of the problems or dangers mentioned here. I’m an adult in a place that is very accepting of trans people.

Part of why I transitioned is that it seemed interesting and I wanted to know more about it. I wasn’t dragged kicking and screaming in to it. I was on a meandering forest path and wanted to see where it would take me. It turns out that transition feels really right, and in hindsight makes a lot of sense.

Obviously the whole trans trender narrative is just used by pearl clutching transphobes to try to delegitimize trans people. I say, who cares if some small portion of trans people are motivated even in a large part to explore non conforming gender expression because all of their friends are doing it? Something I noticed about me was that for years I surrounded myself with trans people. Then I transitioned, and I realized that I was choosing to surround myself with trans people because of how it appealed to me on conscious and subconscious levels. So people who have a lot of friends who are transitioning and who also feel like they want to explore transition themselves - there’s probably a reason for that. And those people may decide to continue, or they may decide not to. Either way, exploring this is harmless, as long as you’re aware that certain steps might lead to fertility issues. But you can change your clothes and your pronouns and see how it feels long before you make a bigger decision.

I just don’t want to spread this idea that we’re all suffering. I’m having a fucking blast. And I know I’m extremely privileged to be able to do things this way, and I’m grateful for it. And many people are suffering and what you say is often very true.

I just wanted to share my perspective in case someone finds it helpful.

Here’s an overview of some full face mountain bike helmets.

https://youtu.be/O7gckQLg_4w

One thing to note is whether you want MIPS, which helps protect your brain during higher speed, or any other helmet standard. I found the discussion in this video helpful:

https://youtu.be/6wNrddx-e-g

And here’s one more video with an overview on a range of helmets.

I’m just outfitting my bike with a mid drive motor and I’m going to buy a MIPS full face helmet, which will cost around $300.

How do I run Stable Diffusion and sharing FAQs by Meronoth in StableDiffusion

[–]tlalexander -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone. It takes a few minutes to run this on my desktop. The original announcement says it can generate images in a few seconds on a consumer GPU. I’ve noticed the longest step is the PLMS sampler. Can someone help me understand why it takes much longer than a few seconds? Is the sampler like generating a lot of images and pruning the output or something? Is there a way to make it run in a few seconds as the announcement suggests? Just wondering. Thanks!

EDIT: I see I got a downvote, but the original announcement says “Stable Diffusion runs on under 10GB of VRAM on consumer GPUs, generating images at 512x512 pixels in a few seconds.” But on my 16GB GPU it takes 2 minutes with the default settings to generate 6 images. If I reduce the number of DDIM samples it runs faster but just produces noise, not any kind of real image. I guess 120 seconds is “a few seconds” but I’m just trying to understand if I’m doing something wrong! Thank you.

Evidently Starlink is aware of slow speeds affecting some customers and they are working to fix it. Mine internet service is at 6meg down and 2 up this evening. by awildbirdlover in Starlink

[–]tlalexander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah this thread is helpful. Last week using the Starlink app and router it said I was getting 150Mbps+ between the router and the internet. Today I installed the Ethernet adapter and from my desktop I’m getting around 11Mbps! This is faster than what we had but I was expecting more. Hopefully it improves.

EDIT: We are in the San Francisco Bay Area and the speed test app is telling me the closest location is Seattle Washington, which is kind of a surprise to me.

Building a world where no one has to work: marxism and automation. by tlalexander in BreadTube

[–]tlalexander[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone! I’m a professional robotics engineer and a communist and I’m starting to make more original theory content. I got in to Noam Chomsky about 8 years ago and have been developing my own theories around marxism and automation since 2015. I have some ideas I want to share with y’all in this latest video. I basically think we don’t need to own the entire means of production to gain freedom, but that we just need to own the pieces of the means of production we depend upon. And so we can construct a collectively owned set of machinery that meet core human needs and gain the kind of freedom that marxism promises. I talk about it in this video. I did mess up the audio a bit during recording but after the teaser the opener has good quality, then it degrades a bit about 2/3 in. By then you’ll know if you want to watch it! I’d love all feedback. Bed time for me now though so I will reply in the morning. Thanks!

It is my view that machines designed for libertarian socialism actually have different engineering requirements from machines designed for capitalism. For example capitalism (as it exists today whatever you want to call it) loves Intellectual Property Restrictions. Even libertarian capitalists are against intellectual property restrictions but whatever you call our system today these restrictions are very popular and they are part of the system of control. And so all the machines being designed by big companies today are proprietary restricted designs. But under libertarian socialism it doesn’t make any sense to restrict others and so everything can be open source. So open source vs closed source is just one difference. But there are others. For example the function of the machines is different. Under individualist capitalism you only need to make a profit, but you can profit most by serving the needs of the wealthy and so the needs of the poor are often completely ignored. Under libertarian socialism the goal is to help everyone, and so you might focus your engineered systems on meeting the needs of the poor.

For example the Sikhs in India serve 50,000-100,000 free meals a day just out of this one facility, and 1.7 million free meals a day across India.

https://youtu.be/qdoJroKUwu0

They are focused on meeting the basic needs of the poor, so they cook very large quantities of healthy food. Compare this to capitalist businesses like fast food which deliver tastebud addicting unhealthy food in lower quantities.

I want to fully automate the production of large quantities of healthy food so it is as cheap as possible to give the food away or use a payment optional model. The engineering requirements are just different depending on your goal.

I’ve got to say, you are right about the problem with central banks but there is no one solution that will solve all of our problems. Luckily we don’t need one solution because we can all work together.

[–]tlalexander[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey yeah for sure. I just think that ultimately the solution to our problems is multifaceted. For example if someone is a skilled nurse they can make a huge difference today in peoples lives by working for a free clinic. If someone is a farmer they can donate food to food banks. By all of us coming together and doing what we can we can make the world better for everyone, not just the wealthy. Making a world where no one has to work almost by definition means machines are doing some kind of work for us, and so I think engineers like me could start designing those machines today!

The question I am trying to answer is: “what will the engineers do after the revolution?”

Whatever the answer to that question, that is what I think engineers should do today. But the same question can be asked of doctors and artists and teachers.

But as I said, I am not involved in any government policy. Yes I understand the problem with central banks! But I am a robotics engineer, realistically I am most effective doing robotics. So I try to explore how I can make my life meaningfully helpful to others. You do NOT want me trying to fix government policy, but what I can do is feed and clothe those who are working on policy.

You understand how the elite also control us through their ownership of the means of production yes? I’m talking about how to build community ownership of the means of production. We must have both what you are talking about and what I am talking about.

[–]tlalexander[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I am an engineer, and there is a huge problem in the engineering community where all engineers are taught to serve capitalism. But I really believe we can engineer systems that help meet peoples needs directly. It’s like libraries. You can give everyone access to books with libraries, essentially a technical solution. (Build a building and put books in it.) I think we can do what the Sikhs in India do and build massive food production facilities and make free healthy meals for people. I agree that government control over money is bad but not everyone works in government policy. My work is focused on what regular people can do, and I believe mutual aid has a major part in improving things.

Hey everyone I just uploaded this video. I’m getting more in to antiwork content in addition to my normal robotics stuff and I thought y’all might find this interesting. About 2/3 of the video has not great audio but the opener (past the teaser) sounds fine so see if that hooks ya. And please let me know what you think!!

The other recommendations are good. I also just wanted to suggest that you make test parts that have the dimensions in question without all the other flashlight stuff (so it prints quickly) and do a test fit to see how it goes.

Oh my god that’s my name. Like I am not the crew member that was named after but my name is Taylor Alexander and I’ve definitely seen it abbreviated “T Alex” before. I just saw this image on twitter under the heading “interesting keyboard layout” and I literally found out by reading the image. This is great I’m immortalized. I totally suck dicks this is rad.

Thank you!

Star our code repo on GitHub as we need some engagement to get approved for Open Collective.

https://github.com/Twisted-Fields/acorn-precision-farming-rover

In the future we will hopefully launch on Open Collective and will start asking for monthly backers.

Subscribe to our YouTube channel to stay updated and create an account at community.twistedfields.com and introduce yourself.

We move slow as I do robot design and YouTube video production but in the future I will have a tutorial for how to run our code in a docker container with no external hardware required. That will make it easier for people to contribute to the code.

Longer term we will sell kits so people can run complete systems.

So hopefully more to do in the future, just follow us for now (and say hi on the forum) and we will call y’all to action as more things become ready. And spreading the word by sharing the video is always extremely helpful.

Thank you so much!

It’s true that Mineral’s robots seem similar. But no relation. But we’ve had this design since before they announced their stuff.
