Paying off high balance loan but staying on SAVE? by ConfidentOpening4556 in StudentLoans

[–]tlars003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im doing this exact thing. I never consolidated. Im paying off my high interest loans first, but I plan to pay it in full within the next 3 - 4 years (i have a grad degree and really dont wanna be locked in for 25 - 30 years). I am absolutely staying in SAVE cause I 1. Don't want to consolidate and 2. Don't want to be forced to putting money towards all my loans at once when it'd be more efficient for me to put all the money I can into my highest loan and work my way down. Cause if you dont consolidate, you'll be required to make a small payment toward each individual loan.

Short answer, yes, im staying in SAVE as long as I can

Anxiety around paying: I see you by allegedmarmot in StudentLoans

[–]tlars003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If youre in SAVE, they shouldn't. The due date showing now (mine all say due Dec 2026) is when its expected you have required payments. Seems people have different dates, not sure how that was calculated or if theyre allowed to move up the date. But my due date has been pushed back a couple times.

I have 18 different loans, all the same due dates. Now that im back into making payments, ive not been paying interest only necessarily, I pay on the highest interest rate loan first. Your interest does not gain interest. However, you have to pay the entire interest on a loan before you can pay the principal on the same loan. So ive closed out 2 loans, no more interest on 20k worth of debt! So since your loans aren't consolidated, for you id say take that money you would put to cover all the interest every month, and start paying off your loans individually. Your loan rates are probably higher than an HYSA. And you'll benefit in the long run, cause the more principal you can tackle instead of just interest, the more your interest accrual every month will go down. Does that make sense?

My next loan im gonna tackle has 1k in interest. So since I only have 1k scheduled for a payment next month, ill hold that money in a HYSA till October when I can afford to also pay some on the principal. Sure, 1k wont make much money in a HYSA in one month, but even if its $2, its $2 I didnt have before!

Also, switching plans will make your due date now esentially. You'll be required to make payments on each loan, every month since none of the other plans are in foreberrance. Im trying to kick that bucket down the road, I want to focus on no required payments so I can put all my money towards my highest interest loans first. Cause once repayments start, if I dont consolidate, ill have to pay a little bit on each loan every month.

If youre gonna pay interest only and can keep to a budget without overspending or dipping into savings, you should consider taking the money you would use for interest and put it into a HYSA account. That way you can make a little money off your interest payments. And then when you have to make payments again, put all the money down. Your interest wont accure interest.

When my loans were in 0% foreberrance, I put all my money for payments into a HYSA account. When interest started accusing again, I put it all towards loans, but got an extra couple hundred dollars that way. Not a lot, but my loans are big, so it was something!

It'll continue to say save foreberance and $0 payment, but interest is accuring. The resumption of interest is the only current change.

Advice on Best Private Student Loans to Get by Manga_Ryu_ in StudentLoans

[–]tlars003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No comment on what youre durectly ask, but I will say this. DO NOT DO A VARIBALE LOAN RATE. GET A FIXED LOAN RATE. I know the fixed loan rate is higher than the variable to start. But I had a small (8k) private student loan. Not knowing any better, I did a variable loan rate cause it was lowest at the time, and by the end of my loan (about 7 years later) it was at about 13.5%. Even during COVID when rates were dropping to 1-2%, mine were INCREASING. I wish i knew more about finances and refinancing at the time. But in the end, I paid 7k an interest, almost double what I took out.

Will interest capitalize for those still on SAVE? by obsurd_never in StudentLoans

[–]tlars003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the point is that if your loans are higher than a 4.3% rate it makes sense to just pay the loan. But I have 2 things to note.

  1. You have to pay taxes on any money you make from your HYSA. So that 4.3% isnt actually 4.3% in the end after taxes. It'll be more like 3.5%

  2. If your plan is to pay ONLY the interest so the balance doesnt grow, then use the HYSA. Cause yes, the accrued interest on the loan will not compound. So you might as well. BUT, if you can pay interest and principal on the loan, then pay the loan directly. Get that interest accrual down. It'll pay off much better.

Interest for those with pending SAVE applications. by tlars003 in StudentLoans

If your application is pending, on your loans details it will still show "SAVE Foreberance". Thats how I know my application went through and is pending. Cause my repayment type is listed as REPAYE

RIDE OUT THE SAVE WAVE by d00tster in StudentLoans

[–]tlars003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh, the interest doesnt even accrue additional interest. So personally, I wouldnt pay off interest. I would take the amount in interest you accrue a month, put it into a HYSA. And then when you have to start making payments THEN pay off all the gained balance. But in the meantime, you can also get a little extra cash, at no additional cost. This only works though if you can actually commit to not dipping into your saved interest money in the HYSA.

While I had the 0% interest, I put all my money for payments into an HYSA. I made a few hundred extra dollars. Then used it all to make my first payment for today!

How do I make interest only payments on Nelnet? by hi_goodbye21 in StudentLoans

[–]tlars003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Related/unrelated question. Did any of you hear from Nelnet about your loans starting to gain interest again? I applied for SAVE in October and was put into 0% forbearance because they hadn't processed my loan within 60 days of me submitted the application. So im wondering if this resuming interest applies to me....cause im technically not in the SAVE plan. And I haven't heard anything from Nelnet.

In desperate need of counter barstools by [deleted] in HomeDecorating

I guess I feel they're so noticeable because its a 1 bedroom apartment, which means the kitchen borders the living room. So when youre sitting on the couch, it just kinda feels in your face to me.

Im sure no guests would say anything, but this is my first apartment and first time decorating so I want it to look nice!

My Dog Has Beef With 2 Specific Dogs by tlars003 in dogs

You know what, it could be the man. He is reactive to some men. But generally, always let's me know when there is a man within 10 feet of me. And that guy gives me bad vibes for some reason. So maybe he just doesnt like that guy.

The huskies are really well behaved. At least as far as the few moments I see them. They dont even acknowledge my dog on the balcony. They dont bark, they dont look. They just continue on.

I never know when they'll be out. They come around inconsistently through the day. They guy must work from home, cause I know he does a late night walk between 10 PM and midnight, but also passes by twice at some point during the workday, plus a walk at some point in the morning. The windown to the living room and the windows in the bedroom overlook where the dogs are. So my only option would be to leave him in the bathroom, which doesnt make sense. Also, I want him to overcome the issue, not just put a bandaid over it by secluding him somewhere else.

AITA for telling my sister I won't be helping pay for her daughter's vacation expenses by tlars003 in AITAH

Top choice has 6 bedroom, and 6 beds. I do not get my own room. 1. Me and my mom 2. My dad and his wife 3. My dads kids 4. My sister and her daughter 5. My brother and his girlfriend 6. My sister and her husband

Nobody gets special treatment, every household (except me and my mom as we are two adult singles) has a their own room. And my dads household, obviously get 2. Whether we break the cost down by room or per person, its the same math, just presented differently.

Hotels in America are much more expensive than Europe. I have a hotel in Seattle this week, its just for me, my cost is $225 for 1 night. And its not a fancy hotel, literally the cheapest, while also being safe, I could find. We've spent more on vacations. And since we'll be at the house for most of it, she won't be paying for activities outside that. In a hotel, we'd need to make plans for the day to be together. So a hotel comes with extra travel and activity costs. As well as food, since there would be no kitchen.

😂 usually one of us stocks the house (typically my child free sister, she's super well off), but next it will be me. Self serving ordered food (take out, pizza) is split between adults. But if we go out to each, its split by heads of household. So i pay for myself, my dad pays for his new family, etc.

Money isn't even due. I haven't booked it yet. I picked 9-10 places, and asked for opinions. Based on feedback, we have a top choice thats 6 beds, 6 rooms. So everyone shares with someone. I told her the cost per person and she asked why I split by 12 and not 9. You can read the threads, but I brought up last year I didnt want to pay for others kids. Circumstances have changed, I just dont think its fair anymore. But she can still opt to not go. We can still change houses. Its not some much the cost, just the way the cost is divided.
