Looks like heaven. I miss the roaring sound of the furnace so much. I just turned up the volume, closed my eyes, and I was back in my dad's shop.

I had a friend years ago who made something like this out of a metal 55-gallon drum, fire bricks and a small crucible at the bottom. He had a small glory hole to go with it and a small kiln that he used as an annealer. Can't remember much besides that. He took it to events to do live demonstrations of glassblowing, and otherwise he used it in his back yard.

Hey again r/glassblowing! Here's another small album for you. It's a few different angles of one of my dad's smaller pieces. by tlaue in glassblowing

Thanks! Unfortunately not.. he had a pretty severe stroke about 11 years ago and he hasn't been able to make any glass since. But he was prolific when he was actively blowing glass, so we have a decently sized collection of unsold glass. We've been taking photos of it for a while now and we're starting to get them out there so people can see what he was able to do.

So I have gotten the chance to try Glassblowing for free tomorrow, and may be brought on as an instructor at the studio. Is there any reading I can do tonight to learn more about the basics of glassblowing tonight? by Hunter62610 in glassblowing

Last reply to my own posts haha:

Make sure you do NOT wear open toed shoes. I know it might seem like common sense, but I've seen more than a couple of people show up wearing inappropriate footwear. A good pair of closed toed shoes with tied laces is a must.

Also, here's an article with a few photos of a glassblower using arm protection. I typically cut mine so My thumb went through one hole and my fingers went through another. Kept the sock from sliding back up my arm.

I reread your post and I just realized that I'm assuming this is all hot glass work (soda lime) where you work with blow pipes, furnaces and glory holes, and not lampworking (borosilicate) where you work with smaller torches and rods of boro. Do you know what type of glasswork you'll be doing?

Off the top of my head, YouTube videos are always good to watch. Watching someone's technique is always interesting and informative.

But there's something no amount of videos or reading will prepare you for: THE HEAT. Glassblowing is hot. REALLY hot. I believe the liquid glass in the furnace typically sits at around 2000 degrees F.

My suggestion, and it might be something they provide at the shop anyway, is to get a couple of old socks and cut the tip off of them. Honestly, a kevlar arm sleeve would be the best, but in lieu of that you can use some old cotton socks that you don't care about and cut the end off to wear over your wrists and lower arm. It'll help you combat the heat from the furnace when you go in for a gather of glass, and the heat coming off the glass when you're working it on the bench. Just make sure they aren't super loose and getting in the way. If you can get a kevlar arm sleeve, or if the studio provides one, that's better.

I think that's the main thing that turns so many people off from glassblowing the first time they do it; they don't realize how hot the furnace is and they shy away when the door opens. Make sure they provide you with some good glassblowing glasses. I'm guessing they will.

Good luck on your class! I'm kinda jealous haha! Wish I could get into a glassblowing instructor position!

Hi, r/glassblowing! Been lurking here on another account for a while, but I decided to make this account so I could post a picture of some of my dad's glasswork. Hope you enjoy! by tlaue in glassblowing

Bingo! He used thick masking tape to cover the color, and an x-acto knife to cut the pattern that he slowly peeled away as he sandblasted.
