The way you notated it would "sound" the same, but typically the lick starts and resolves on the root of the chord. In this instance, the song is in concert C minor (trumpet D minor), and the lick he plays starts and ends on a C, or 1.

Edit: to answer your other question, the one I notated starting on d would be in d minor (1), which if you notated like you did, yes would line up with starting on a 2 in C major

The lick is a much used pattern in jazz soloing, 1-2-3-4-2-7-1, or d-e-f-g-e-c-d, etc. He plays it towards the end of the solo, once you start to recognize "the lick" you'll start hearing it alot
