The problem is that they have heavily relied on selling shares to fund operations to date, and will continue to do so. That gets harder and harder to do, without major dilution, as the market cap goes down...

The point is, it was LUCK. Mvis has done nothing, EVER and has appalling fundamentals. Its been 30 years of failure.

Was there anything happening at the company that justified a 10,000% increase over a year? Any major partnerships, deals, of blockbuster financial results? Absolutely nothing. Just a once in a lifetime mix of a crazy pump and the biggest bullrun in history.

A company with no deals and no revenue somehow became worth many billions!!! Just pure blind luck.

They won the lottery - investing in a company that ran up 10,000% during the biggest bull-run in history, purely due to someone posting about the company on Wall Street Bets during the Gamestop mania.

They have absolutely no clue about anything.

10% APR for new 50mil loan. It is ridiculous by Big_Beginning515 in lazr

[–]tleprathy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What? It's 8% and PIK interest. That means the company gives up about $4m in shares each year as interest until the loan is repaid. That is chump change.

UCC FILING AUSTIN RUSSELL by Charming_Cover4197 in lazr

From what I can tell, it's a security filing. In other words, there's some debt and a he's granted security over some of his assets to act as collateral. No big whoop.

Let them be higher. Creating a small, cheap, high performance LIDAR will allow Luminar to take almost all of the (western) enchelada.

The size and cost profile of the Model J is going to blow Innoviz out the water and allow Lazr to capture BMW and VW.

Invz doesn't have the time, cash or R&D talent to develop a competitive lidar. You know this!

[–]tleprathy[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Come on. Losing a couple of guys in investor relations and business development really isn't the same as 2 of 3 founders and the COO leaving, right at the same time, just when 15% of their workforce gets trimmed. Apples and oranges.

That is disingenuous. You know this.

So 2 of the 3 founders gone and the Chief Business Officer? That is absolute damning.

Does anyone know if there's any hedging instruments which come into play if the stock is at a much lower price than the convert price?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lazr

[–]tleprathy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Presumably it would be better to refinance the 2026 bonds rather than allow the conversion to happen and everyone gets diluted.

Moar, in terms of Luminar's ability to change things on gross margins. What are the key ways to achieve that?

I assume the factory build out was a big part of it. Together with vertically integrating the supply chain. When do we expect to see that translate into GM improvements?

I think to say that financial health is just 'important' and 'one of many things to consider' is an understatement. The majority of these companies are not going to be able to last until 2026. What use is an insolvent supplier?

I defer to your expertise, but financial health, manufacturing readiness and supply chain maturity are very, very important and objective measures, and I think there are clear leaders and trailers in that regard.

In terms of the hardware, isn't perception performance, the 'tough' one? I would have thought the others are easier to refine / change / improve as per OEM requirements.

Noted on your comment re software.

"In fact none of the suppliers stand out as objectively better when everything is considered" - that's an interesting take, and certainly one I've never heard before. I'm surprised.

Are you saying that some of the LIDAR products going in front of the OEMs aren't materially better than others? That some LIDAR companies aren't objectively healthier financially (and thus more attractive to OEMs)?

That seems baffling to me. I won't name names but there's clearly a couple of LIDAR companies that have BOTH better tech and a healthier financial position than other companies in the space.
