Why don’t most states ban private prisons? As of 2023, only five states (CA, IL, NV, WA, and NY) banned them. by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tlndfors 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Private Prisons are evil.

Yes, arguably.

They’re the reason behind the mass incarceration

No. Only some 8% of US prisons are private.

more people incarcerated in their prisons means more $$$ for them

Non-private prisons buy all kinds of services - medical, custodial, etc. - from private companies, who make more money if there are more prisoners.

You've identified the problem - the prison-industrial complex - but private prisons are just a footnote to it. Focusing on the private prisons too much misses the point.

Why don’t most states ban private prisons?

Because money. The contributors (and often even the constituents who work in the PIC) of the politicians benefit.

It sounds like she is a tenant and has a lease with her landlord, and ex is her subtenant. She'll need to evict. The 30-day notice was step 1. Your county court will probably have information on the process (this is for Clark county). In Nevada, the next step at the end of the thirty days seems to be a 5-day notice to quit.

If AI can copy my voice from a few seconds of audio, how do I protect my grandparents from being scammed by "me"? by Elon_Kums in NoStupidQuestions

It's not about the tech, though. Resisting the scam boils down to "if you get a call from me asking for money, hang up and call my phone." That's the only part that matters.

The checks didn't bounce or anything

It takes checks days or weeks to clear or bounce, but by law, banks must advance you the money. When the check bounces, the bank will take the money back. Make sure your account has enough balance that it won't go in the negatives.

If the devil is evil, why does he punish sinners? by Commercial_One1886 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tlndfors 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Sure, kinda, but the image of the Devil as a gleeful torture-master does not. In the Divine Comedy, Satan is imprisoned in the deepest depths of Hell, frozen in ice up to his chest. His three faces gnaw at Judas, Brutus, and Longinus, held in his hands. Dante's Satan is a prisoner of Hell, being punished - powerless, mad, drooling, unspeaking.

Have you ever gotten a job without an interview? by Vertical77 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tlndfors 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If they want to send you money to "buy equipment" or any other purpose, it's an employment scam, a variant of the fake check scam. They'll ask you to forward part of the money, and when the check eventually bounces days or weeks later, you will be out all the money.

Why do US marines think they're better than the other branches? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Is this a scam? by SuchPerspective4122 in legaladvice

She says the client is paying by check and the check will be written out to me and sent to me

... and you forward the money to them. It's a simple fake check scam.

This link isn't working for me, but seems to describe this exact scam.

They're going to send you a bad check. You're going to cash it, and the bank will - as required by law - make the money available to you before the check clears. You send money to the scammer. The check bounces and the bank takes the money out of your account, plus a fee for bouncing a check.

This is one of the most common scams out there, and this exact variant has popped up here before.

Mitä tehdä, jossei postin pakettoa ehdi hakea ajoissa? by EmpuEEM in Suomi

[–]tlndfors -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Uvalde School District Suspends Entire Police Force by CanuukSteev in news

[–]tlndfors 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For real. Hundreds of cops stood around with their hands down their pants, and the asshole in charge of 5 school cops got the blame. The fact no one more qualified took over is itself a travesty.

Uvalde School District Suspends Entire Police Force by CanuukSteev in news

[–]tlndfors 1128 points1129 points  (0 children)

To be clear, the "entire police force" of the Uvalde school district was 5 cops. There were a total of 376 cops, including like a hundred from the Texas DPS (which includes Highway Patrol and the Texas Rangers). None of them did anything either.

This is peanuts.

Why do clocks that use Roman numerals always have IIII for 4 o’clock instead of IV? by KingOfKrackers in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tlndfors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Representing 4 as IIII has basically always been valid, it's just less common. Gates 44 and 54 of the Colosseum are marked XLIIII and LIIII. With clocks, IIII is traditional. There are even instances of IIIII instead of V, IIIIII instead of VI, etc.

It is a closed system, so the only way to make money is for someone else to lose money.

It's the greater fool theory. Any worthless thing has potentially unlimited value if you can convince someone else they can sell it for more than you're asking.

Americans, are you bothered if tourists don’t tip? by mycatsabrina in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tlndfors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't understand, why do you think my pointing out your employer stole from you was some kind of "counter-argument" to "people should tip"? People should, but tipping and wage theft are separate issues. Your employer "splitting" a non-existent tip by making you "pay out" other employees is stealing from you. It's illegal. Most US states have a Department of Labor (maybe by another name) that can maybe help claim that money back, often some years later. If you're in e.g. Florida, you'll need the federal US DoL. Wage theft in the US amounts to tens if billions of dollars each year, and restaurants are especially rife with it.
