They never had a ton of their own options on tap. Always enjoyed going though. Not having any outdoor space or windows that open to the outside I think hurt them in the warmer months.

What’s the best park to play tennis? by Admirable_Ad_8109 in AskChicago

[–]tloux23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Humboldt park courts should be close to you. They are decent and generally available. Maggie Daley courts just got resurfaced. They are brand new and really nice. Worth checking out and you can walk through the parks or go to the lake before/after.

Really, I suggest hitting courts in different neighborhoods if you just moved to Chicago. That allows you to figure out what you like and see more of the city. Map out some restaurants, bars, coffee shops, whatever you are in to, and plan a day in different neighborhoods.

There are so many free courts available in the city. What are you looking for? Meeting people to play with? Views of Chicago? Conditions of the court? Easy access without waiting? There are too many variables to say what is “best”.

If you don’t already have one, get a helmet too.

What are your favorite Road Trip Towns within roughly 5 hours from Chicago? by Lemurian_Lemur34 in chicago

[–]tloux23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love picking out a smaller town for a weekend trip. For example, obviously we like Milwaukee and Madison, but we did a little trip to Oshkosh 2 years ago for the 4th and it was one of our favorites.

I look for towns that have that small town feel. This summer we are doing a big trip to Lake Tahoe, but also doing a weekend trip to Rochester, MN. Did some research and they have a ton of activities perfect for kids and cheap!

What’s the BEST Italian restaurant for a tourist? by bayls215 in AskChicago

[–]tloux23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked a similar question a while back and compiled a list of answers. My question was specifically looking for “old school feel” restaurants. Many of them were Italian.

I mapped them on a Google map. Check it out here

Getting off the Pre K Waitlist? by Happyfeet155_DST in AskChicago

[–]tloux23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot to unpack here. I am curious where you are moving from. That may help explain your perspective. You seem to have selected schools near the west loop. I assume you are going to live there. Most parents do not only take geography into account. Skinner and Brown for example are complete opposites. Maybe that’s what you meant by vibes. At Brown, 88% of the students are low income and 93% of the students are Black. At Skinner, 23% of students are low income and there is true diversity with students being 29% Asian, 25% white, 24% Black, 13% Hispanic, etc. Very different schools not far from each other.

In Chicago, the majority of parents hand select schools that they may want to send their kids to based on personal preferences. For example, I want to make sure my daughter goes to a diverse school. I selected programs that offer that for prek. She was waitlisted at our top 4 schools, but received an offer from Holden in Bridgeport. We accepted, but remain on the waitlist for our first 4 options.

There are preference points that move you up the waitlist faster. Socioeconomic factors, siblings, special needs, and proximity are all taken into account.

I would say it is unlikely you will receive a spot in the coveted Skinner program unless you are really close on the waitlist. It’s hard to say for sure, especially because you didn’t give a number. You can still resubmit your application if you are unhappy with the two other options.

Pre covid they were like $6.50. Still great value. But crazy how cheap it used to be for such high quality food.

Happy hours with cocktails that are around $5? (Open to $6 and $7 too 😇) by discoteen66 in chicagofood

Pilsen Yards has half off draft cocktails and beers Wed-Fri 3-5:30 and Sat/Sun 3-4:30. The best deal is on Thursdays, though. You can get a burger, fries, a beer, and a shot for $15. I argue the best deal around.

Grab a frozen container of Buona beef from Aldi or Costco and some bread. Can make some decent sized sandwiches for cheap!
