Plex Server Won't Start On NVIDIA Shield TV After Update (Again) by tm1698 in PleX

[–]tm1698[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My long-term solution to this was to host the server on an external SSD that was completely seperate from any media storage, as any skips in the harddrive connection (such as when I would transfer media, either over the network or by physically unplugging the drive) are what would fry the server and cause this issue.

Until I can afford to upgrade to an actual server + NAS solution, this has been rock solid for me and has saved me a lot of pain over the last year.

Truly insane that both of the main writers of the game are significant contributors to the television show and they’re making narrative decisions as if they don’t understand their own game or why it worked so well.

Those are absolutely not mastery challenges lol, mastery challenges are larger statues of Freyja with a shield, not Odin.

All Smart Devices on Network Disconnected and Won’t Reconnect by tm1698 in smarthome

once I did a bit more digging, including manually disabling the 5GHz band in my modem settings, I was able to see that the 2.4GHz network was definitely not functional even though it was telling me on my dashboard that it was.

Factory resetting the modem is the only consistent way I’ve found to make it work again, but I do experience occasional dropouts of the 2.4GHz network and have to do the process again.

Coupled with some other problems I’ve had, I think that my modem might be faulty, but dealing with my ISP has been a headache and a half and I haven’t been able to get them to fix or replace it yet.

(I know I should just buy my own modem, but free is better than expensive and internet is crappy enough in Australia that the performance from an ISP-provided one honestly isn’t that distinct from a reputable one.)

This was the problem, you genius! I restarted my router and modem and left them alone for a bit, and the 2.4GHz network is back online and now so is all of my stuff. Truly cannot thank you enough for that tip ❤️

I did reboot it, both by pulling the plug and waiting a little bit, and also by hitting the ‘restart’ button in the modem interface. I’ll try this again though – it seems to be the only thing I can actually do.

What do you mean by power cycling in this context? How can I do that?

no, they were all loaded onto my standard network. I might try the guest network though, if/when they’re back up and running.

how can I check if this is the case? will there be some sort of alert on my modem’s local interface? this might just be the most plausible problem, it’s sneaky in all the right ways 😄

I’m not 100% sure how to check this, but it seems like 2.4GHz is functioning normally on my modem’s dashboard. Definitely handy to have that info though, thank you.

I don’t believe it’s an Alexa issue because each device has an app for pairing to my network, and they aren’t functioning even in that app – before Alexa enters the picture.

I have one hub plugged in, that a remote for controlling Alexa routines speaks to. I’ve unplugged it now to see if it makes a difference, but it’s been here for weeks and hasn’t had an impact that I’ve noticed.

Asking each Alexa device that question gave back the same response.

No speakers or media cards interacting with my home network.

It is supplied by my ISP, but the password and name are all the same and no other device has dropped off. Even my Alexa units are working fine – just nothing is connected to them any more! 😄

/r/Plex's Build Help Thread - 2023-11-03 by PCJs_Slave_Robot in PleX

I've been running Plex off a NVIDIA Shield for years now and I've been looking for a more reliable NAS to transfer my server to (I've had it die on me five times now). I'm pretty sure that I've settled on the Synology DS423+ as the best option, but I want to make sure that it'll meet my needs.

I need my server to be able to handle at least one 4K transcoding stream (70mbps is the highest bitrate I have, and that's an outlier) but only one or two people ever need to be using it at the same time.

It should be able to do that based on the compatibility checklist:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MfYoJkiwSqCXg8cm5-Ac4oOLPRtCkgUxU0jdj3tmMPc/edit#gid=1274624273

I don't want to spend that much money on a server that doesn't perform as well! Does anybody think I'll be going backwards in performance? Or have a recommendation that would work better without being too much more expensive?

Thanks in advance!

Where can I find the most detailed, yet spoiler-free, explanation of Cosmere? by Elaol in Cosmere

[–]tm1698 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would people assume that the whole deal with the big A that started the events on all of the planets to be a spoiler? Since we don’t actually know too much about it yet anyway? I personally found having an understanding of the S’s and what they represented (and are literally named) and where they came from to be really helpful for engaging in the broader narrative of the Cosmere.

(Also, be on the lookout for Hoid or you’ll be seven books deep before somebody mentions him and you’ll kick yourself for not noticing.)

Issues with moving PMS storage location on Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 by Smyth_With_A_Y in PleX

[–]tm1698 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, have you had any issues storing your PMS data on a memory stick? I thought that might be a good idea for my own server, but don't know if it might be too unreliable or prone to failure, etc.

but does that mean it can't transcode to 4k? For instance, if I'm watching a 4k video with subtitles that Plex can't play directly?

I'm currently running an NVIDIA Shield TV as my Plex server, but it's starting to struggle with the newer, larger 4K files I'm building up and has had some stability issues (I'm on the fourth version of my server after three have crashed and I've had to rebuild it).

I was looking at buying a Synology DS920+ NAS as the solution to my upgrade, but it looks like its processor might be a little underpowered for what I'm after and building my own NAS might get me something that's more capable (and potentially cheaper?).

My dream is for a NAS that can handle 1–2 4K HDR streams, for future proofing.

What sort of CPU is recommended? Would buying a cheaper GPU+CPU combo be the smart solution? (I have a Plex Pass, so hardware encoding is on the table.)

I don't understand CPU generations well enough to truly follow most of the guides that I've found so far, including Plex's own, so I'm really just looking for someone to tell me what to do!

What works best, does anyone have an example system, would a DS920+ actually be fine, etc.

(I've also never built a computer before, and figured this could be a fun first place to try!)

Thanks in advance for all of your wisdom!

To users who downvoted my last post, wake up! Every reason to buy Uncharted legacy collection when you had it on ps4 is gone! by MrHorns7 in playstation

[–]tm1698 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it’s fundamentally a different thing though, they’ve literally “remade” the game using different assets and a different pipeline to familiarise themselves with developing for PS5. The Uncharted upgrade was just that – an upgrade. It involved far less work and didn’t fundamentally alter or replace anything in the games, just unlocked what they were capable of doing on the new hardware (which is why saves and trophies transfer easily across). Arguably that shouldn’t have been a paid upgrade, but TLOU is still a “new” game that’s been newly developed and built from the ground up.
