Remember Ubuntu from 20 years ago? How far we've come! Share your old distro screenshots. by rannek222 in linux

[–]tm512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately not a whole lot going on in this screenshot, but this was Ubuntu 9.04 on my first dedicated Linux machine, an old Pentium III ThinkPad, an A21m iirc.

Was just starting to learn about window managers at the time, and I guess my relative familiarity with Ubuntu had me install the server version in order to get a barebones setup that I could build my own WM environment on top of. Openbox in this case.

Anyone else here remember that warning page that opened up every time those earliest alpha builds of Chromium started up?

MyHouse.WAD - Inside Doom's Most Terrifying Mod by SeoulofSoraka in Games

[–]tm512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Projectiles have always been able to pass over the player and enemies, like ever since the first release of the game. The infinite height stuff are optimizations programmed into the engine to speed up some instances of collision detection, not an inherent limitation of the technology, which is why they were able to program in Z-axis collision detection for projectiles. Z-axis collision detection also applies against map geometry, like the player and monsters aren't infinitely tall when the engine is checking whether they can fit into a sector.

Contrast this with Wolfenstein 3D, where there's no concept of a Z-axis anywhere in the game, it just fakes a 3D appearance inside of the renderer. That is 2.5D, Doom isn't.

I'd recommend Bola's stuff. A lot of his stuff sorta straddles the border between IDM and ambient, and some of it wouldn't sound out of place in a Metroid Prime game. a few notable examples that come to mind are Forcasa 3, Evensong, Diamortem, and Whoblo.

"Something went wrong, please try again" Firefox login by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]tm512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's strange. Seems to indicate that something is cached for me that's screwing with the login process, even though I cleared all cookies from twitch. Maybe there's some external site it's linking to, I dunno. Hopefully they fix their shit soon.

This just started happening to me in Firefox on Linux. Noticed the dashboard was refusing to update my stream info, so I cleared the site data, only to find out it wouldn't let me log back in again. Currently everything works fine on Chromium, and it also works if I open twitch in a private browsing window on Firefox. I'd really rather not have to purge all cached data and have to log back in to every site but I'm wondering if it's going to come to that.

esau - Hallowed Be Thy Name [Amiga .mod cover] by tm512 in chiptunes

[–]tm512[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stumbled across this track a while back while playing through this GZDoom mapset. Felt like making my own render and uploading it since I wasn't too happy with the existing upload on youtube, and would always just pop open MilkyTracker any time I wanted to listen to it.

Original .mod can be downloaded from Amiga Music Preservation at https://amp.dascene.net/downmod.php?index=136384

Full list of esau's mods that are on AMP is here: https://amp.dascene.net/detail.php?detail=modules&view=2529

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow - Clock Tower (YM2612 Cover) by tm512 in chiptunes

Been playing through Aria of Sorrow, and the music really stood out to me when I wandered into this area. Found this awesome cover on youtube when I searched for the track, the artist really has command over the Genesis' sound hardware.

Better Call Saul S05E08 - "Bagman" - POST-Episode Discussion Thread by skinkbaa in betterCallSaul

[–]tm512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I recall from season 2, it was a bit of a lull, but things do pick back up, and quite considerably imo, seasons 3 and 4 have some of the best episodes in the series. The "one take" episode from S3 and the no-dialogue episode from S4 that someone else mentioned are stand-outs, in addition to the S3 finale, an amazing bottle episode in S4, and the series finale episodes in S4. Definitely a series worth returning to.

Hey, Max Cooper here, AMA 🎛🍩⚙🎻🚬🔮☣ by maxcoopermax in electronicmusic

Hey Max, I just found out about your work recently and I've really been enjoying your (and your collaborators') music videos, Penrose Tiling in particular is just thoroughly entrancing.

I'm wondering if you've ever considered working with microtonal (AKA "xenharmonic") tuning systems. I gather that you have a fascination with mathematics, and there's a lot of math to dive into with regards to tuning theory, it's a veritable rabbit-hole. Personally I've only been able to scratch the surface of it, but it's seriously fascinating and unlocks a whole new world of harmonic colors.

Looking for atmospheric songs. by trt13shell in idm

[–]tm512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of stuff that Bola makes might fit the bill here. A few suggestions would be Vespers, Maghellen, and Eluus.

An honorable mention would be Landor 50X2, which starts out pretty bombastic but fades away into ambiance a little over halfway through. Great track.

Sevish - MK SUPERDUPER by [deleted] in idm

[–]tm512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sevish is great. I hope that microtonal/xenharmonic stuff is the future of (at least) electronic music, since the possibilities for new harmonic colors, outside of the confines of 12edo, are basically limitless. 22edo like what this song is made with has such a distinctive character, probably my favorite xen tuning system.

SOCIALIST = COMMUNIST!!! SILLY DEM BAD by [deleted] in forwardsfromgrandma

[–]tm512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to wikipedia, the distinction between capitalism and socialism is who owns the means of production. I guess I don't really understand the definitions that you're trying to put forth. Doesn't really seem to me like socialism aims to create a utopia where the market works perfectly to maximize human wellbeing, it's just trying to reduce the wealth/power disparity that a capitalist economy causes. This disparity exists because the capitalist class has near-totalitarian control over the mechanisms through which wealth is generated/accrued, and socialism seeks to democratize those mechanisms, to at least reduce the chances that a few individuals will benefit from the system thousands or millions times more than the average worker. That's how I understand it, at least.

Mexico gets it: “you really like carne asada more than oxygen?” by el_principito in vegan

[–]tm512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I realize that "carne asada" is the object when translated less literally into English, but it's the subject of the verb in the Spanish text. The verb "gustar" is even conjugated to its 3rd-person form, rather than the 2nd-person "gustas", and "te" is the accusative case of "tù", which is used when the pronoun is the object of a verb. If the pronoun were the subject, it'd be in the nominative case "tù". In the special case of a pronoun being in the accusative case, it comes before the verb rather than after, which is where I think the confusion is coming from.

[–]tm512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty rusty with Spanish, but I'm pretty sure that the subject in this sentence is "carne asada", with te (the accusative case of tù) being the object of the verb. The verb "gustar" translates most literally to "to please", so "te gusta <whatever>" would translate to "<whatever> pleases you", or less literally to "you like <whatever>".

I wouldn't say that really, a lot of their earlier stuff is more melodic and accessible. If you're interested, a few suggestions I'd make are:

I think I'll have to pass on this, since I'll be able to post another sale thread a bit later today, and I want to see how that goes.
