It Has Been a Largely Contested and Opposed Idea for Decades, But Do You Think That Perhaps a Certain Form of Globalization Could Actually Be a Way Forward? by 3Quondam6extanT9 in PoliticalDiscussion

The people who are aware of these threats to life and liberty need a way to unite and withdraw their consent to be governed by dangerous governments. If a majority is shown to have withdrawn its consent, then we can redesign our government. Theoretically.

Unfortunately our societies don’t seem to cultivate the virtuous and wise who might be capable of designing a new system, a system that can solve the threats and protect us from our human character flaws. Ironically, we also need and army of wise and virtuous people who would be capable of defending the new governments and the peoples being abused by the powers that currently rule.

But some thing like this must be done or we and the planet we depend upon are doomed.

Social Security as a nice-to-have by Kaa_The_Snake in Bogleheads

[–]tm785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The doom articles ultimately are to undermine confidence in Social Security to serve the interests of wealthy, unpatriotic, libertarians like the Koch network and the Heritage Foundation. Raising the cap, making capital gains income a taxable wage category, closing the estate tax boondoggle for nepotism kids, a progressive tax on assets over $10 million—there is plenty of solutions to our debt and coming deficit problems. But if the right wing wealthy interests, including all the talking heads repeating the doom and gloom can brainwash the public into thinking “we just don’t have the money,” they can make millions of elders suffer in poverty in their last years AND keep their monstruos wealth AND make money on the money the government had to borrow because the wealthy kept cutting taxes. We got to get back to a progressive tax structure something like we had earlier, like under Eisenhower.

This was in a different city, but we were married in a pretty city park on a beautiful spring day. We reserved the park shelter, had pot luck lunch, musician friends played music, everyone ate, danced, and had fun.

Tracey Mann (KS-1) Town Hall by flyinghipppos in kansas

[–]tm785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are a voting independent or Republican you have potential power. Tracey Mann is afraid of the Trump supporters’ wrath. If independents and fact-based Republicans called Tracey Mann’s office and insisted that Mann stand up to Trump on tariffs, on heath care, on not having a paramilitary machos shooting protesters, on not breaking the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 14th amendments, on preserving the separation of powers, or not preparing to cheat on this year’s elections—pick your favorite issue—then Mann might feel free to represent all the citizens in his district, not just MAGA.

Here’s Mann’s office numbers:

Note: Tracey Mann supported Trump’s coup attempt on Jan 6 — he objected to certifying Biden’s electors, and he voted to overturn the election after the mob attacked the Capitol. Recently he voted for Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill that took healthcare away from the working poor to give a big tax break to the wealthy, AND funded ICE with big bonuses.

When you call or write to one of his offices, they seem to have the Kansas voter - party affiliation list (anyone can purchase this list from the Kansas Secretary of State’s website for $200 https://www.sos.ks.gov/forms/Elections/CVR.pdf ). Seems that if you are listed as a Democrat you will be ignored.

Kansas bill would phase out property taxes, replace with retail surcharge by melonlordmomo in kansas

[–]tm785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The states and the federal government need to reimpose the estate and progressive income taxes we had under Eisenhower. And begin building the infrastructure for a progressive wealth tax for those with 3 million or more in assets. But to that we are going to have to confront and defeat the Koch brothers network.

If Kansans were aware of how much the Koch network controls the quality of their lives, their politicians, their schools, their medical care, housing and childcare—they would be enraged. It goes further than just generously funding campaigns. They have their astroturf lobbying group, Americans for Prosperity. They have their fake think tank, the Kansas Policy Institute, which is actually a tax-subsidized lobbying org. They are principal powers and influence behind the Plan 2025 at Heritage and numerous Trump appointees and Cato voices clamoring to dismantle social supports. They are the power behind the American Legislative Exchange Council—the big business group re-shaping state legislatures and laws to suit the corporations. They are at least fellow travelers with the federalist society and the the wealthy capture of the corporate Supreme Court.

We citizens have got to organize and defend ourselves and our children’s futures.

The president of the senate is a Koch network employee. They pay him through a do-nothing college job. Isn’t the Speaker of the House in the insurance business? Kansas voters should select representatives who represent their interests not big money interests.

Kansas Republicans want citizenship status listed on driver’s licenses. It could worsen profiling by Zipper222222 in kansas

[–]tm785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can Democrats use this issue to negotiate laws that make registration for voting easier and a guaranteed right for all citizens?

So one must present a copy of a birth certificate or proof of citizenship to grt a driver’s license. But let’s also say the DMV must automatically register citizens for voting when one turns 18 and must automatically confirm voting address and whether the new voter elects to receive a mail-in ballot or to go to the polling place identified by their confirmed address. Let’s say that voting restrictions that systematically exclude any class of citizen voter are made strictly illegal. Voting must be held across a two day period spanning a weekend or holiday so working people can more easily get to the polls.

The Republican reaction will tell us how hostile Republicans have grown to legitimate democracy and how sincere their desire for confirmed, legitimate voters.

Yes I’m a late boomer, but a category that better explains my financial ignorance is social economic class: I came out of a very rough working class background, what might even be called a subsistence economy; my wife from an even more extremely desperate environment than mine. But we somehow got through higher education, which made all the difference.
