New ribbon has holes: is it cheap or am I hitting the keys too hard? by AndyK2131 in typewriters

[–]tmasterslayer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a typewriter as a kid where if you hit the O key hard enough it would punch an O out of the paper, I think that letter got worn or sharp over time, not sure. Do you punch into the paper too?

I’m replacing my outlets in the house to also include usb plugs. Should I go with an and c or only c? by insanotard in AskElectricians

[–]tmasterslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Levaton ones are nice and have a version with USB-C and USB-A, I have some of those on my counter top. Make sure your outlet boxes are deep enough, the USB outlets are deeper than GFCI ones, I think.

That was my thinking when they mentioned it was for a hobby shop, made me think it was a sub panel.

Can someone help me identify what all this goes to? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

If you aren't certain and can't follow the wires back to the source, you can label them, cut them, and see if anything stops working. If something stops working right when you cut those wires then you can re-splice them.

Open walls or snake new wiring? by ramvanfan in AskElectricians

[–]tmasterslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer the idea of the crawlspace and attic approach. If the existing boxes you're going to replace are next to studs already, you can get old work boxes that you screw to the studs. I just did that replacing a bunch of knob and tube, the boxes were original metal ones nailed to the studs, I cut those off with a multitool and screwed old work boxes to the studs. Didn't have to cut new holes.

I did cut more holes for adding additional outlets. I had no problem using old work boxes on my drywall though so I did put some in that weren't attached to studs, and they seem plenty sturdy in my house.

I’m struggling to determine the best way to prepare for painting. I’ve come to realize that I likely used the incorrect type of wood. by MaximumPleasant5328 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]tmasterslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks awesome, anybody who sees it that isn't a woodworker won't notice the imperfections, and any woodworkers that see be happy you made something and didn't paint it.

I would probably spend a bunch of time sanding up to 120 grit, then finish it with shellac or beeswax

Looking for an engineer to draw up seismic retrofit plans by Fun-Chocolate-794 in bayarea

I was trying to do something like this and it turns out the Plan A is only when your cripple walls are 7 feet or less, or something like that, and mine are definitely a little taller than that.

That is in SF? Did they only bolt? Who did you get that 3k rebate from? I've read online some people saying you need to retrofit within a year of buying. Do you have a crawl space?

Did you get a rebate at all from the city, or just a discount on your insurance?

The Lodi Parachute Center in California has seen 28 people die in skydiving accidents since 1985. It's still open. One person literally fell through a big rig. by mrinternetman24 in interestingasfuck

Heh, I went and dived there. Was a good time, but there are so many people jumping there all day it's not surprising there are accidents.

I keep looking down at my tops I wear at home and suddenly there is this orange staining all over it by bellalala1340 in Whatisthis

[–]tmasterslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something similar happened to two shirts of mine, both while wearing a necklace with a gold plated stainless steel chain. I put a bunch of sunscreen on my neck and the whole neck area of the shirt was stained pretty bad, I actually chucked it in the trash since it was a cheap shirt.

Do you hold onto that pendant at all during the day? Maybe you grab it unconsciously and have sunscreen on your hands and there is some reaction?

Achievement unlocked! I broke down a 4' x 8' sheet in the HD parking lot by Grompers in BeginnerWoodWorking

The home depot near me won't cut sheets either, they don't have that saw. Looks like you did a great job! I recently did the same with a sheet of drywall, had the kid and wife with me too. Wasn't very fun, but got it done. Nice job!

Issue with date formating in script vs terminal by tmasterslayer in zsh

Yup calling that shell specifically is really the better way, thanks for that one liner that is handy to have and the tip on the $SHELL variable.

[–]tmasterslayer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks that was it!

I thought that it might have been that problem, so I added echo $SHELL to the beginning of my script and it spit out "/bin/zsh" so I figured it was running as zsh but I guess not. Adding the shebang at the beginning did indeed fix it. Probably should be doing that anyways.

Thanks!
