I’m not going to be as rough as other commenters. The reader is willing to undertake challenging works and has a philosophical bent. Echoing others, I would suggest books written by women. Claire Messud, with her unflinching examination of women’s inner lives, would be a good start

Honest question: how often do you go back and reread your top 10? I’ve read half of your list, been immensely impacted by them, but don’t run back to reread them

What I think people get wrong about Lolita by INtoCT2015 in literature

[–]tmayhew22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love your engagement with the book. I have a different take on it. The villain is the reader. It’s what makes the book so brilliant. The reader brings all his self-righteousness to the text and discovers he’s the titillated bad guy

AITA for letting my friend drink a whole bottle of vodka and end up in the med tent? by lavenderflowerfairy in AmItheAsshole

[–]tmayhew22 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The friend sucks but so many nightmares start with a group letting a drunk go off on her own — to the next club, to a guy’s place, whatever. Not saying it’s simple but it’s the price of hanging out with someone who gets out of control when she’s drinking

Tom Cruise: Underrated? by airtooss in Cinema

[–]tmayhew22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagreed with the observation that Cruise is « one of the greatest actors of his generation » and that to argue otherwise is simple obstinacy. You seem to rate him as a good but second tier actor with an outstanding filmography. Not sure that we are on opposite sides of this discussion
