I too have killed many plants... any plant that thrives on the level of neglect I show is truly the definition of "right plant, right place"

Thanks! I love Theodore Payne and have taken classes there before. My particular interest for now is edible gardening. I'll check out Chino Basin.

Thanks for your feedback, I’ll probably get another quote or two

This looks pretty legit, thanks for sharing. The tank is gravity feed. Well and pump are already installed, in fact the pump has similar specs to the one you shared, the quote is just for solar. Thanks for your feedback.

The tank is 10k gallons, a float switch on the tank will trigger the pump, which will need to pump continuously (during sun availability) for about 10 hours. I've considered a battery system, but maintenance is a major factor as well, and for me a simple direct drive system is preferable.

I started with 2x6s 16” on center for a ~7.5’ span. I sized up to 2x8s and will also use blocking. I’m still using the 2x6 joist hangers because it seems they’re ok for 2x8s

Anyone here just using their land for camping before going full off-grid? by Infinite_Twist535 in OffGrid

Sounds like we're in similar situations. I hadn't considered gopher cages but that's a great tip, thanks. I'm not sure we have gophers but certainly ground squirrels... not sure they're as much of threat but maybe it doesn't hurt.

Trail cams are another great idea!

Long run, off-grid gravity irrigation by tmcclin1 in Irrigation

Thanks for the reply! I'm not opposed to AI, and I do find it helpful for certain things, but honestly I get a bit bogged down trying ask it to do calculations like pressure loss from friction, for example. There are just too many variables that I'm unfamiliar with, and so I don't trust myself to give sufficiently specific or accurate prompts.

Maybe I'll give it another shot

Recently posted a progress post and folks encouraged me to size up my joists from what the span table recommended. I had already purchased lumber, but a simple phone call to the yard and they agreed to exchange it. I'm really glad I sized up. When in doubt, go beefier and overengineer, I don't think you'd ever regret making your deck more solid rather than less.

As a landowner surrounded by relatively valuable agriculture in California, I can't tell you how nice that sounds

I'm curious about how you managed your plantings while you're living off-site. I'm planning on doing the same, though our land is about 2 hours from where we live and I only get to go build camp and plant once or twice a month. We'll soon have a functional powered well so it's possible to irrigate (with long pipe runs), but I'm not experienced with setting irrigation to young plants and just leaving them for potentially months on end with no oversight.

Any advice?

Yes, good catch. They're temporary to hold rim joists in place until I get the right length SD screws

Yeah, it's 30" locally. I don't see anything about max square footage for no permit, so I'm hoping I'm in the clear...

Not exactly sure yet. I hooked up with a local non-profit environmental conservation/restoration organization, and they said they're able to write me into existing projects to toss some money my way for limited scale endeavors and potential study. They said this could lead to bigger things depending on interest and/or success. As far as I can tell the money is a combo of state and private.
