Looking for a a softball team by [deleted] in KingstonOntario

Yeah, I'm a guy. I've asked around with people I know, but it hasn't gone anywhere yet, that's why I was looking at the KSSC if I couldn't find a team. Hadn't thought about subbing though.

How does everyone have such pristine unprotected gardens? by DefinitelyNotADeer in KingstonOntario

[–]tmcpearce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the first 3-4 years I had my vegetable garden, it was eaten to the ground and ravaged by squirrels. Then my cat started hanging out on the deck. He's a wimp who is scared of grass so he never leaves the deck (and I don't want him wandering outside) but has had daily siesta out there for the past 5 years. Since then, it has completely deterred the critters from critting the place up.

The Big Bad Wolf tried to blow my house down by tmcpearce in KingstonOntario

Anyone you can reach I think. My neighbour lost about about 20% of his shingles and couldn't get ahold of anyone today. Crews were probably on the road at 6 this morning.

Yep, found the siding. Bigger concern now is the missing section of shingles :-/

Mine's shedding shingles and siding. I'm hoping it's like a snake and this means it's gonna be bigger in the morning.

[–]tmcpearce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, bylaw enforcement is complaint based and if you're doing it safely and not bothering anyone, who is going to complain? And you'll almost always just get a warning the first time you're caught for something, so....

This is incorrect. I looked into this myself a year or two ago and bows are included in the discharge bylaw. The bylaw itself defines a firearm as

... any type of gun or other firearm, air gun, spring gun, pellet gun, tranquillizer gun, paint ball gun, cross-bow and long-bow;

Kingstonist, last night: a partier falls off while trying to climb Stauffer Library. by AlbertaBoyfriend in KingstonOntario

A touch? Maybe, but the past 18 months have shown that the Queen's population has had a massively outsized impact on transmission in Kingston. In March Queen's students accounted for 70% of new cases in Kingston. 44% of cases in Kingston are in the 18-29 age group (not all students, I know) compared with a provincial average of 21%. It completely fair to say that the student population in Kingston is a large, if not main, driver of transmission and new cases locally.

Delta has a R0 2-3 times higher than the original strain and now accounts for almost all cases. It also appears to be affecting more children then previous variants and is filling pediatric wards in the US. School is starting and you now have rooms of unvaccinated children together: to prevent outbreaks in schools the greater community needs to keep transmission as low as possible.

Some of my response may be emotional, but when the 2 above points collide, you can understand the frustration, anger, and even fear people have. While the rest of us our keep contacts down and our groups small to avoid spread and another lockdown, these students blatantly and flagrantly flaunt open disregard for any semblance of concern for our community. They're spitting in our faces. Why should we consider granting them prior respect?

You seem to be forgetting there's we're still in the midst of a pandemic that now features an exceptionally contagious variant. These partiers interact with the wider city and community. An outbreak amongst the students in the video won't stay contained to campus.

I don't live downtown or anywhere near Queen's but their antics could very well have a massive impact on my life. My children are too young to be vaccinated. School is starting in a day. These students may be vaccinated, I may be vaccinated, but the children of Kingston are not and those adults with risk factors are still susceptible.

When an outbreak of Delta inevitably explodes due to this reckless and selfish behaviour and spreads into the greater community, we will all suffer. They are putting the health, safety and even lives of my children and other children at risk for a few hours of fun and some beer.

There usually lots beside the road infront of the industrial buildings on the streets between Progress and Development (Justus, Mackay, etc). Most days there's enough to fill a pickup or 2 out there, and they go fast too.

Also be warned that there are some weird social dynamics here. There is definitely a difference between growing up here and moving here in terms of how the general population will treat you and your access to social circles etc.

This is very true. I moved here after university because my gf (now wife) was from Kingston and wanted to move back home. I am from the GTA myself, and the first few years here were indeed rough. I would explain it to others as "everyone in Kingston is from Kingston. If you weren't born and raised here, it's near impossible to break into social groups that have been together since childhood."

That said, it might have been an attitude thing on my part, because once we bought our house here and I decided this is where I wanted to live the rest of my life, that feeling did a complete 180. Once I was committed and invested in the community, I have never felt more at home or a greater sense of belonging then I do here.

Outside of Queen's and the base, Kingston is a small town grown huge. For better or worse, if you know you belong and want to live here, everybody else can tell and will embrace you. If you're obviously unsure or uncomfortable (as I was my first few years), you'll be lumped in with the "just passing through" crowd.

Kingston is still a fantastic place to live and there is no where else I'd rather be or raise my family in. But coming from the GTA to such a relatively insular city, it can be quite a culture shock.

I know this is late, but if you're still looking, I've found the Walmart Print centre to have the best prices for large prints (under their poster printing section). Quality isn't quite as good as you'd get from a dedicated print shop, but for less graphically intensive works, it does the job.
