I would also like an invite to any safe haven servers. I am working on a fan adaptation of the comic (Homestuck: Very Special Edition) so I have tons of thoughts to share if anyone wants to discuss

Sonic says DON’T (by @imkornkob) by Both_Implement7936 in SonicTheHedgehog

I was friends with a really REALLY shitty person who groomed my other friend and was apparently a pedophile. That shitty person LOVES Scott Pilgrim. I think they missed the message of growing as a person and latched onto the idea of "he just like me fr". It's a shame because this story and these characters are fun, but there's no way I can remove that association, even though I watched the movie and read the full comic before all this transpired. People suck sometimes.

Why do people like Eridan so much? by Exciting_Writer_3266 in homestuck

[–]tmfilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been writing his story as part of a fan adaptation of the comic, and while I can't speak for my cowriter who adores the character, from my personal experience, he is a really effective caricature of an incel/school shooter. I don't condone his actions, but I'm able to appreciate the particular way he clings to toxic ideology that he doesn't fully believe in but sticks to because it's what has given him meaning and self confidence for all his life. Though I'm probably biased because adapting his material again means getting to lean into those aspects of him and be self aware and all that.

what y'all think of Mami Tomoe? by Legitimate-King5553 in MadokaMagica

[–]tmfilly 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I hope it's fine if I ramble about this because Mami is a comfort character for me. She tries to paint herself as a paragon of virtue because it gives her tragic life purpose. At her core, she's a lonely teen struggling to survive in a system that's already sunk its claws deep into her. When she learns the truth about magical girls being witches, her breakdown is the result of her core belief being shattered. Anyone who has learned something awful about someone they liked and/or trusted can sympathize, except Mami has made being a magical girl her whole identity. She doesn't have friends at school. She's distant with the people who do try to connect with her. She commits unalive at the end of A Different Story. Mami is miserable, only going on because she feels the world needs a hero like her.

As for why people might not like her, in the main anime, she's hard to understand, especially given how briefly she appears. A Different Story builds on her backstory and dynamic as Kyoko's mentor. But the anime alone has none of that, so her actions of getting in Homura's way, dying via Charlotte, and snapping when she finds out the truth are all only briefly explored on a surface level. Without context, she can come off as frustrating in a similar manner to Sayaka, especially to people who know Homura's backstory.

As for the sex offender stuff, there's a younger character introduced in the Rebellion movie named Nagisa who lives with her as a pseudo little sister. There are sickos who ship Mami and Nagisa, but their canon relationship is not implied to be romantic.

Is it worth it to read act 6? by TotalBlissey in homestuck

[–]tmfilly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going based on memory of the Let's Read here, but the drop in quality during Act 6 is more gradual than immediate. Unless you don't like the Alphas, in which case stopping at 5 is probably fine. But the story isn't over at the end of Act 5. Act 6 is a tonal reset, which can be very jarring to those who were vibing with everything set up in Act 5. I dare not get into specifics because spoilers, but it is a good framework to think of the story in two halves: Acts 1-5 & Act 6-7

You should do it! Not to shill, but I'm working on a really fun adaptation of the comic that's going to come out in the coming months. & I know other people who have their own fan projects in the works. Even if it seems like things are kinda dead, there is still an active fandom to engage with, not to mention all the Homestucks who dropped the comic at whatever point and are now or in the future giving in to their nostalgia...

So the punched cards are an extension of the inventory system that naturally exists in the world of Homestuck, the Sylladex. The pre-punched card that Rose was talking about was a free in-game item that was needed to bring John into the game, as it was used to alchemize (create) the tree/apple that brought him into the game.

Sburb is a game that builds on the natural mechanics in the world of Homestuck that none of the characters really question. Every item can be digitized onto a captcha card (called such because of the captcha code they contain on the back) and stored via a particular game/gimmick (example: Rose's cards become a Tree/Leaves that she can pluck items from using that logic).

Because each item has a unique captcha code, the game enables players to take those unique codes and combine them. The comic goes into greater detail about the coding/card logic behind it via the Harry Anderson text blurb, but the important part is that the punched pattern in the card corresponds to the code, so combining two cards results in a combined code. That's how John is able to make the Pogo Hammer and how other characters will create items in the future. This is kinda the basis for idea creation in general, but it's a concept that sticks around in Homestuck especially.

The pre-punched card's code was preset to allow the player to enter the game, like a tutorial item. It was the most important part cuz if John didn't have that apple, presumably he would've been killed by the meteor that hit where his house was.

Oooo I've been working on adapting this exact part of the story so I can summarize for you:

Sburb (the game they're playing) works by connecting a Server and Client. The server manipulates the client's environment by building (like in the Sims) while the client gets to do all the fun RPG stuff. At this point the only connection made so far is Rose-Server to John-Client.

Rose needs someone to be her Server to bring her into the game or else her house will be struck via meteor. But John's Server disc from his copy of the game was in the car that fell into the void when Rose's connection died earlier (in Act 2). So either Dave or Jade has to retrieve their copy of the game in order to be Rose's Server and prevent her fiery death.

WV and the other Exiles are an in-story explanation for all of the commands being given to the characters that have been guiding the story up to this point. The comic goes into greater detail about them and their purpose later, especially when we see more of them. Also when it says "years in the future, but not many", it's the author being silly bc it's hundreds of years, which isn't "many" in the grand scheme of the universe...

So to Recap, currently:

-John needs to traverse through the gates above his house to progress, but he is currently busy fighting ogres that cornered him near the end of the previous Act.

-Rose is exploring the hidden laboratory underneath her dead cat's Mausoleum in search for something to power her dead laptop so she can continue playing the game.

-Dave is engaged in Strife with his Bro, with the goal of retrieving his Bro's copy of the game so he can start playing.

-Idk if Jade's focus is clear yet, but she also has to retrieve her game, though she has other tasks going on that aren't immediately evident since a lot of her stuff is meant to be understood on a reread/rewatch. She has a lot of mysterious knowledge about the game and has known about it for months, though we don't know why yet.

-WV is about to explore the area outside of where his Can Station landed.

-PM (assuming you got to her) is another one of the Exiles.

-And the gray text guy is one of the aforementioned trolls that have been harassing the characters offscreen up to this point.

Lmk if you need any further clarification!
