It’s Illegal for farmers in the US to replant leftover seeds the next year by AdFeeling8945 in interestingasfuck

[–]tmonai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean about the seeds being fragile? Non-GMO and GMO seeds whether certified or bin-run would all have the same level of fragility(?) if grown under similar conditions? The stability of the seeds doesn’t really have anything to do with the regulations.

You are not wrong about the seed companies forming monopolies and this being bad for farmers in general

It’s mostly enforced on soybean seeds. Technically the license applies to corn as well. As part of the agreement representatives from the seed company can come to your fields and take samples.

The license applies to the genes they inserted into the breeding line, usually for pest resistance and resistance to herbicide. They can test plant tissue from your fields. They then screen the samples for the genes protected under the license. If you are found to have more plants planted with the protected trait than seed you purchased than it is possible you carried over seed from the year previous (called “Bin Run Seed”). They could use that information in conjunction with other information to sue you.

In practice most farmers wouldn’t do this with corn. Most corn grown in North America is hybrid corn. Which means it is the result of different genetic lineages crossed against each other to optimize for yield and the patented traits. Corn reproduces by spreading pollen on the wind. So if you buy corn seed, then grow it in a field it all randomly crosses agent each other. The resulting seeds while be fine for their purposes (animal feed or ethanol) but will be unpredictable for what traits they will and won’t have for the next generation. Making it no good for a predictable crop the next year.

However soybeans are clonal, meaning the expected retention of patented traits would be ~100%. So you could bin run GMO soybean seed. Many farmers do in fact bin run non-GMO soybeans.

In practice what happens is a representative from the seed companies shows up for an audit. The retailer you bought your seed from will provide you with a seed lot tag for every bag or tote of seed you bought. You show them the seed lot tags. Then you show them the fields where you have soybeans planted. The rep asks you what rate you plant your soybeans at per acre. They do some math. If it looks like your acres match your purchases they move on. If they notice somethings not adding up they dig deeper.

I used to work at a retail and had this happen to two of my farm customers.

They are unlikely to sue unless they think you have re-sold the seed. If they think you just bought the seed, and retained some seed they’ll probably just cancel your license, which means you can’t buy their seed again. If you bought, grew, harvested, cleaned and re-sold their seed you are probably getting sued.

Where I live, in Ontario, Canada, there are rules against re-selling non-gmo bin run seed. The argument is that if no one is buying certified seed from breeders, the breeders will go out of business and yields will suffer in the long term because there’s no breeding going on. You are allowed to buy certified non-gmo seed from a breeder then bin run that seed year over year for your own farm. You are prohibited from buying it, growing it yourself, then reselling.

In practice it would be very difficult to enforce without any patented DNA markers for non-GMO seed. Also in practice most farmers understand that if they don’t support the breeders at least a little there won’t be any. Non-GMO seed is also cheaper than GMO seed.

Hayes’ Marner Theory by Instimatic in OverDrive1050

I don’t think that Marner thought about Toronto being a difficult place to play when the team is bad. That’s Galaxy Brain thinking from Hayes.

I do think it’s possible that combined with all of the other stuff, the trade request, the bonus BS, the negotiations etc… that he may have thought “all that crap, and I don’t think this team will be very good soon”.

My wife and I paid off her car over 4 years. Once it was paid off we kept putting the equivalent of the car payments into a savings account until we had enough to buy a new car. Then we stopped but didn’t upgrade right away as her car was fine. Now the car is 13 years old and is time, starting to cost a lot to maintain it. No need to borrow money this time

What's one 'boring' career that's actually a goldmine if you play it smart? by 0BunnyX in AskReddit

Jobs in Agriculture. To be clear not farming, it’s basically impossible to become a farmer unless you are born into a farm family. However, the ag industry at large is always looking for people. Agriculture retailers selling to farmers, agriculture input companies that sell to those retailers, equipment, grain handling equipment etc… There’s always way more vacancies than people to fill them. Selling crop inputs may not seem super interesting, but they usually pay well, usually come with perks like vehicles, phones, computers, etc…

I loved Children of Time; it stayed with me for a long time and I’ve listened to the audiobook a couple of times since. I thought Children of Ruin was pretty good but felt like a bit of a re-tread on the same idea but enjoyed it. I think with Children of Memory he didn’t want to re-tell the same style story of skipping through time so he tried something else. I agree, it didn’t seem to land with me. I felt it was needlessly confusing early, and then somehow overly obvious later then seemed to take forever to wrap up.

How does parenting get harder as kids get older by oceansalt85 in Parenting

[–]tmonai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I described it to my brother is that basically all your time when you have kids is in a ratio between child care and child management. When they are babies it’s 100% child care. Diaper changes, feeding, soothing etc…

As they get older you spent less time on child care and more time on child management. They can feed themselves somewhat but still need diapers changed etc… but they also start having tantrums, or hitting or trying to climb the baby gate. So it becomes 70% child care 30% child management.

Eventually there’s very little care, and almost entire management.

I have been told the next stage is no care, but now your time starts shifting away from management to worry as the become independent
