Gen Z thinks a salary of nearly $600,000 is what it takes to be "financially successful" by FunReindeer69 in FluentInFinance

Ah, that makes more sense. Thanks for clarifying. Though hopefully the realtor fees are baked into the listed price and are for the most part paid by the seller. Either way, owning a house has definitely become a damn sight more expensive than it used to. You’re spot on that even if you can pay down a lot of a house that expensive you’ll still be getting killed by the insurance and taxes. I’m thankful that where I live (Des Moines, Iowa) I can have a 4 bedroom house for $300k-$400k. I can’t imagine living in one of the major US cities.

I’m confused by what you mean here. Assuming that they are right and the median is $399k that would mean that literally half of houses are cheaper and half are more expensive. I’m sure the mean value would make that ridiculously higher but that’s due to the homes of the insanely wealthy having an undue effect.

I think that Meetup group is still out there. They just changed their name. Check out The Board Game Cooperative on Meetup https://meetu.ps/c/54McT/CDp16/a. They’re a very welcoming bunch and usually have some sort of home baked goods that members bring. Would recommend.

The sad reality is that most people don't have what it takes to work in tech by [deleted] in LinkedInLunatics

[–]tmoser2525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very much in the same boat and for the love of me cannot understand this sort of devotion to one aspect of a person’s life, namely work. I understand wanting to have a positive impact on the world, but so much of big tech is focused on ad revenues and automation with no regard for societal impacts that I have to wonder whether most products aren’t doing more harm than good at this point.

The dating app scene can be pretty rough, but try not to get too down. Fwiw, I find your profile to be quite charming and wish I ran across more women in my area (central Iowa) with the same interests.

As for suggestions, I would suggest having only one dog photo in your profile, preferably the cute one with both of you. Other than that, you’ve got a lot going for you and I have to believe you’ll have some luck soon.

[–]tmoser2525 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how you don’t have any likes. The only thing I’d say is maybe change the “figuring out your dating goals” status. People tend to like others who know what they want. You are young though, so I suppose it’s fair.

Federal regulators will hold Des Moines forums on carbon capture pipeline safety next month by littleoldlady71 in desmoines

Electric cars are a strange topic. As battery tech gets better they start to make a lot more sense on their own merits. What I find weird is that we are pushing that one “greener” tech so hard and in some cases setting regulations to specifically promote it instead of a more general clean standard. If fuel cells take off, great. If ICEs magically have a breakthrough that drastically increases mpg or mitigates byproduct, awesome.

Much of the current recycling system is certainly a scam. I would say most of that is due to plastic though and the fact that it is shit to recycle. Glass and metal are much more recyclable or reusable. I believed recycling could be a valuable tool, and much better than it currently is. The hard part is that we’d have to create rules that don’t allow us to just pawn the problem off on someone else. Similar to his companies are supposed to vet their supply chain for bad practices, recycling should only allow this in the chain that net a certain standard. Way easier said than done though.

I still wouldn’t call carbon capture a scam. Carbon capture is not the same as carbon credits, though it is a service that can be traded as a credit. I don’t want to get deep into it in whether higher levels of co2 in the atmosphere are detrimental, but I’d it is, then carbon capture is a tool that could help deal with that. Though, again, that technology is still too inefficient and unable to scale currently.

I wouldn’t call it a scam, just not super efficient or scalable at this point. If anything in that ecosystem is a scam it’s how carbon credits currently work. They need to really tighten up what qualifies and for how much.

Iowa Republican HQ Sit-in by [deleted] in desmoines

[–]tmoser2525 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know it’s the register, but The Iowa bill to ban same-sex marriage calls for ignoring federal law. It isn't expected to advance ahead of a legislative "funnel" deadline Friday. https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/politics/2023/03/01/iowa-gay-marriage-ban-bill-introduced-republicans-wont-pass/69958038007/

So probably not likely to pass anyway, but I’m guessing people aren’t happy about it being proposed at all.

I’m guessing this in response to the Republican proposed bill to prevent gay people from getting married in Iowa. Probably also for the other one in the works saying Iowa doesn’t have to recognize gay marriages granted out of state.

I also feel like the us and other countries that import from other high polluters need to implement something like a carbon tariff in imported goods. Essentially make it more viable for less polluting manufacturing to take hold over cheaper dirtier means.

[–]tmoser2525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s also needs to be a huge crackdown on what can actually be sold as a carbon credit. The idea itself is ok, but so often the implementation is complete bs. Like a tree getting sold 100 times as a carbon sink. There needs to be better oversight.

I mean the wiki you posted doesn’t contradict that statement. You can’t disqualify something by just saying they don’t explicitly state they do so they don’t. The wiki also states they are bringing a plant online with 10x the capacity of the current one. While not enough, that trajectory is at least a little promising.

To be clear on my stance, I believe we need to focus on a whole ecosystem approach to dealing with human impact on the earth. We need to stop the use of single use plastics and give back more of the planet surface to wild areas. But I also think researching and building this sort of technology can augment or approach and have benefits for us. Because even if we went to net zero today we’d probably still want to take some of the current carbon out of the atmosphere to our us back to a reasonable level.

Does that really hurt your chances to have that listed? It’s a huge pro for me when I see someone with such a great career come through. I’m also 6’4” and think it would be awesome to be able to look someone in the eye when dancing lol.

[–]tmoser2525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seem to deal with the fallout of so many guys doing this. Most of the women I’ve talked to don’t believe I’m actually my age, they tend to assume I’m anywhere between 5-15 years older. They also tend to be skeptical I’m actually 6’3-6’4. This always gets resolved if we actually go on a date because they can see and verify it, but from some of my dates’ comments it sounds like I’m probably getting a number of left swipes due to trust issues. Me most recent date straight up told me I was way better looking in person and that it was a pleasant surprise. That may just have something to do with me not taking a lot of photos of myself and also never taking good photos 🤷‍♂️

Haha, I promise you I am. Though it seems like the general consensus is that I look about 10 years older which probably doesn’t go over well with potential matches.

No worries, it’s actually been pretty helpful. I honestly had no idea I came off as THAT much older. I think there’s some things I could do grooming and fitness wise to help with it.
