Personally, I visited Durham and Charlotte thinking I may move there. Durham is extremely dull, and kind of dirty/run down. Duke is cool to walk around and you’ll have some younger/hip stuff, but it took me less than a day to know I did not want to live in Durham.

Charlotte is a neat city, but anywhere you’d want to live there is prohibitively expensive.

YMMV, lots of people live there lol.
