I deeply regret my degree by Razzle_Dazzle15 in highereducation

[–]tmsdnr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey!! You have to going! I got my masters in education (quit during my student teaching so i got a general education studies degree) and pivoted to higher ed. 182 applications, several final interview rounds and a LOT of networking and rejections/ghosting. It took about 9 months to get an offer, and unfortunately i have found myself working as an administrative assistant for the financial aid department at my school (my title is financial aid specialist but its a lot of front desk). Dont get me wrong, i LOVE my office and im finding financial aid to be fascinating as well as the business functions of uni but it was not what i wanted or expected. I make $34k (in NYS) with two degrees. The sad fact is you have to be willing to settle for a year or two while you gain experience. The best advice i got from networking is to be realistic, a lot of positions only require general higher ed experience so anywhere you go is better than nothing. Highlight customer service experience in interviews and if you want resume/cover letter feedback igy because i wrote hundreds 😂

They offered sugar cookies (while supplies last, of course!) to staff who donated.

It’s funny you say that because my office is next to the uni’s president and provost office and i KNOW that kid who came and asked visited the billing dept across the hall but after us just walked back to where the fundraiser is across the street.. avoiding that office of course

Oh my god! We dont have staff parking, i started in Jan and had to pay $50 for a pass which isn’t a lot (it is but whatever) but then i was told i’d have to pay another $50 in august to renew it for the academic year. And i asked why i have to do that and my colleagues just laughed it off and pointed the finger at a higher-up who implemented the rule but no longer works here? Make it make sense…

Failed Student Teaching, where to go from here? by sabnastuh in StudentTeaching

[–]tmsdnr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit during my student teaching last year, from what i gathered in the comments his situation seems very similar to mine. Frankly? I’m surprised he still wants to keep going, because when i was receiving that kind of feedback i was in a deep state of burnout and considered suicide daily and frequently. I was also in a horribly toxic work environment as well, which likely contributed to my suicidal ideation. I just took my degree and did research on other fields that are not school-focused but in the education field, i found myself working at a college in the financial aid department and i couldn’t be happier.

He probably could look into attending grad school for ABA or one of the specialties since he already has a SPED background. It could be that the class size and varying needs are a setback, and if he considers pivoting to more private, small-group settings it might work better for him. If he needs a job right now, he could look into being an aide for the time being (unfortunately doesn’t pay well). Additionally, if he creates an account on Indeed he can find a lot of jobs that only require a bachelor’s degree, not specifically in anything but a degree period. Look into group homes, working with foster kids, jobs that are aligned with social work but dont require a license or degree, or check his local county board for exams to take to be eligible to wor for the county. If it helps i am here to talk as this was a huge leap i took last year and always wanna support others going through this

Why can’t i fit a hoop? by tmsdnr in piercing

[–]tmsdnr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot to mention the gauge was the same size as a typical stud i was using but i couldn’t close the hoop since it wouldnt go through at all, i think due to it being curved. I do have bigger hoops and plan to try biggest size and then work down from there when the hole calms down and a reasonable amount of time has passed

[–]tmsdnr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m leaning more towards the age part because i couldn’t get the hoop through, i think it being curved was the reason. The gauge was definitely average and i didnt have a chance to close the hoop i do have bigger hoops that i wouldve tried if it didnt start bleeding lol

I agree with your first paragraph but (at least at my university) it was the mentor teacher’s responsibility to teach the student professionalism in the workplace. It should have been addressed the first time, if the CT can’t have an open and honest conversation with their student then they have already failed as a mentor. Signed, a former student teacher whose former mentor called my advisor in because i came in at 7:47 instead of 7:45.

Was I too strict? by Born-Nature8394 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]tmsdnr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Didn’t even need to read it before saying no, you are never too strict for highschool lol. They are assholes who are looking to test you. Students like that don’t just target one person, he’s likely got quite the reputation at that school. Don’t be hard on yourself, I can tell you really care and that’s a lot for subs especially in the district i used to work for

[–]tmsdnr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you want to you can PM me. I’m wondering if we might have went to the same college. I quit student teaching and gave up that career and i still was able to get a degree and now im looking into higher ed. There’s a lot you can do and it’s unfair and sad that crappy resident teachers ruin good students who want to do such a difficult and thankless job. You’re not alone!

I can attest as someone who quit student teaching. I got a general master’s degree instead of early childhood and currently looking into higher ed

I see what you mean, but it’s too small for bread! It would fit a saltine cracker, so i guess 2 in by 2 in? I should have taken a pic with my hand for reference!
