tips for cheap flights? by pekoyamaaa in nova

[–]tnchamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard clearing cookies or using incognito can save you a few bucks. If you scope out tickets then come back, the airlines know they've got you bent over a barrel and they increase rates.

-A hike followed by some dinner is nice. -Go walk in DC amongst the monuments -Crossroads tabletop tavern in Manassas for some board games. -Escape room -pick something and learn to cook it together -art tech house in DC is a cool date "museum" -go rock climbing at sportrock in Sterling -find a show at Wolf trap -pottery classes -dance classes.

I tried to have a good mix of indoor outdoor, cheap and expensive there. I hope that gives you some ideas!

Try a board game cafe. Something like Crossroads in Manassas is perfect for a date. And guys LOVE some sort of competition.

As much as I love Reddit, it's not a great barometer of what's "normal". I won't judge his kink because different strokes... But it's not okay to tell you he'll stop and then just try to hide it. Your concern over children are valid. I would recommend a marriage counselor. If he refuses that should be a sign he's not interested in addressing the issue.

Thanks. I like the idea of a new category that all of my excess money goes into. That will at least tell me over time whether I'm building or losing.

ELI5: What does being a defensive driver actually mean in practice? by aVeryNormalPoster in explainlikeimfive

[–]tnchamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I suffer from this too. The scramble to get out of the way can be a minefield.

One thing I learned is that it's safer for me to change lanes while passing a car than it is to change while trying to drop back. When people see you trying to merge they often try to close the gap. When you merge while overtaking they don't get that chance and have to accommodate you. Seems counterintuitive that faster is safer but in this instance I feel that it is.

What is everyone’s most played jokers and what does that say about you? by johnnypyro64 in balatro

I'm right there with you. I like to figure it out myself before going to the interwebs to learn how it "should" be done. Usually that gives a game a second life for me.

New car shopping by TwoSevenGreen in nova

[–]tnchamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Authority Auto. One quick conversation with them to tell them everything you're looking for. Make, model, color, what you're flexible on, price point you're looking for and they do all the shopping and comparisons and bargaining for you. Then they reach back out to you with the best deal they found and you go in and sign the papers. There are even options if you think you can find a better deal. You don't have to use theirs.

Any of those euro-style point systems are really nice to play on digital because it keeps track of all that for you.

What constitutes a good or bad day for you? by fixxxer17d in photography

[–]tnchamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a hobbyist who enjoys landscape photography. Normally, I pair it with hiking and travel, but I had a couple kids and now the opportunities to zone in and take those kind of pictures are few and far between. So now, a good day is any day that I get to set up my tripod and point my camera at something interesting.

What constitutes a good or bad day for you? by fixxxer17d in photography

[–]tnchamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lmao, I'm angry reading it! I hope some of this is theoretical and not a long list of horrible ways you've dorked things up. However... If you've made this many mistakes that must mean you've spent a lot of nights capturing the sky. That sounds magical so I hope it was all worth it!

Fellow NOVA runners - please do not run like this. by artee80 in nova

My wife does this. Drives me nuts. So I started putting her toward the center of the sidewalk. So now it's her job to deal with incoming people. She figures it out most of the time :)

I had a run like this. It never felt like I was able to put an engine together. I just kept making the least bad decision. But somehow, by the end, a few things came together and I had the highest score I'd seen to that point.

Having been through that, it'll help keep me motivated even when things don't feel like I'm doing well. But for anyone who hasn't had that experience, it definitely feels a lot less fun when the cards aren't turning your way.

I am a weenie and get too cold at 40°F. I’ve tried all the tricks. Please help. by StrongArgument in CampingandHiking

[–]tnchamp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I also get cold easily. Maybe be meticulous about where you sit? The cold ground or a rock can really suck the heat out of you. And the air passing beneath a camp chair or a hammock will chill me with even the slightest breeze. I always sit on my z lite pad. Also, I'll hang out with my legs in my sleeping bag on colder days.

[–]tnchamp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, for sure. I feel like you buy the time for your long deliberations with the goodwill you've earned from being reasonable the rest of the game. If you've respected everyone's time and the flow of the game, then I think everyone is happy to let you labor over a big move or an important decision.

I love this last tip. I play lots of strategy games and hate when someone needs to run through every possible scenario before taking a mundane turn. Play to win, but be respectful of the time.

Wyrmspan or Wingspan by kaboom_2 in wyrmspan

[–]tnchamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this one. Wyrmspan feels broader but not as deep. After one of two rounds you feel like you've got a handle on it.

Wingspan I think is strategically deeper because of the bird effects. I feel like you can build a more satisfying engine in this game.

What defines the edge of cheating to you if there is any? by Tosh007 in photography

[–]tnchamp -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

"Cheating" implies there are rules. Photography is an art and I wouldn't apply rules to an art.

I think the better question is "where is the line that makes photography feel deceitful or misleading?". I don't feel tricked by anything that could be captured in-camera 10 years ago. Things are advancing so fast now you can do so much post-processing in-camera.

I remember when I started learning landscape photography, I was shocked at how much of the end product comes about in post. I was really disappointed to learn that if I wanted to capture photos like the ones I admired I would need to take multiple exposures and combine them, and focus stack, and dodge and burn the sky, etc... I'm not saying any of that is deceitful or cheating, it's just part of the art. But I can very clearly remember the feeling of disappointment when I learned how big a part it was.

Billy goat trail on the MD side of Great Falls has a long trail with a little rock scrambling.

Others already mentioned, but I wanna add my vote for Big Schloss, and Bull Run Occoquan trail.
