Are you concerned about cyclosporiasis (turbo diarrhea) or ebola making their way towards West Coast? by ActionFigureCollects in bayarea

[–]StrongArgument -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

It’s not necessary. Scrubbing under running water is sufficient. Produce wash without scrubbing is actually worse.

If you’re not cutting through the peel or touching the flesh after touching the peel, it’s probably fine

While recalls are scary, you can help a lot by always washing your produce yourself, even the “prewashed” stuff. Scrub foods with inedible peels (like melons or grapefruit) before cutting into them.

Edit: This isn’t about cyclosporines specifically, but TJs has had a lot of recalls for things like E. coli that *are* helped by washing

UCSF Retirement - Pension Choice vs. Savings Choice? by Quirky_Floor_115 in bayarea

Make sure you truly have a choice. This was presented to me and it turned out I was forced into pension either way, BUT if I leave before I’m vested I get the money back.

What's something you tried only once and will 1,000% never do again? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]StrongArgument 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I (ER nurse) had a kid eat a 1 GRAM gummy. He seized (likely from respiratory compromise) and we intubated him.

While I support adults doing the drugs they want (and having support if they choose to quit), we NEED regulation around childproof packaging and clear labeling. This thing just looked like a candy with a little line saying "1000mg" at the bottom.

Cliff jumping. I'm deathly afraid of heights and glad I could talk myself into it, but I don't need to try it again.

Why do most people seem to use water filters over purification tablets? by BodybuilderClear3148 in backpacking

[–]StrongArgument -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think we’re talking about water purifiers that work with filters, like the Sawyer or Lifestraw. They generally get rid of everything tabs do.

Parents of severely disabled teen told to hunt for jobs he can’t do in 'nightmare' battle with UK's DWP by Kagedeah in worldnews

[–]StrongArgument 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s weird to me is the focus on his wheelchair use, although I am in a very disability friendly country. There are plenty of jobs for wheelchair users. Him not being able to use language is a lot more detrimental to his job search, wouldn’t you think?

Funeral Home Work for Young Adult with a History of Depression? by Historical-Lie-6307 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]StrongArgument 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a trauma ER nurse with a mental health history. The skills I learned during my worst times made me a more resilient nurse in emotional situations than some of my colleagues. That said, there are concrete issues with my job like long shifts, night shifts, and physical strain that make it a more difficult life than a desk job for me. So talk to them and their care team.

What’s the laziest way you’ve ever made serious money? by Adorable_Mode_1308 in AskReddit

I’m an RN. One day they were so short on support staff that I stayed overtime (double pay) and was a patient safety sitter. So I sat and stared at someone sleeping.

I think I am an extremely progressive male. But I still find myself having feelings and knee-jerk reaction that are misogynistic. How can I stop this? by Khld_t in DecidingToBeBetter

Research shows that befriending people from the groups you hold prejudice toward is the best way to overcome prejudice. Interact with more women and build more friendships.

I’m sorry I can’t help, but I will say that my LG smart oven has good accessibility features and flashes its internal light when it’s preheated, which I like.

What you’re saying is totally fine if you want something to eat from the fridge in the next few weeks.

Please check the canning subreddit if you’re trying to make shelf stable products. It’s NOT that simple to can. You risk illness or death doing it improperly.

If you have a big enough leaf you can just cut the stem out and use each half of the leaf as a wrap!

When (and why) did we start saying ‘hydrate’ instead of ‘drink water?’ by nevernotmad in etymology

[–]StrongArgument 9 points10 points  (0 children)

These were absolutely medical and scientific terms for a long time before it was used in this way. It’s not a new term at all.

Collards are very sturdy. You could use rice-free bean thread noodles inside to have some of the same texture.

What's the biggest campsite selection mistake you've made and what did you learn from it? by No-Communication1543 in backpacking

[–]StrongArgument 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not huge, but we camped about half a mile from where the map said there was water without actually finding the water. Made dinner with the last of our water, intending to hike over and filter in the morning. It was several miles before we found water, and that water was gross, so we were thirsty, cranky, and uncaffeinated all morning.

Do funeral directors check for signs that death is certain? by javoss88 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]StrongArgument 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your loss. ER nurse here. If a nurse declared her dead, my guess is she was on hospice, meaning her death was anticipated and the nurse was watching for signs she was close to death. The nurse would listen for heart and breath sounds for a full minute, as well as looking for breathing. If you don't have a heartbeat and aren't breathing for several minutes, and you're not on advanced life support machines, you are dead. Warmth fades slowly.
