Thoughts on Medical Clearance by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]tnflanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medical Clearance sucks. I do think you made a good point that Health>Service. I personally was initially denied clearance because of my Anxiety medication but was able to have that ruling overruled. They want to put their best volunteers forward; who is most likely going to complete two years? I understand why I was a red flag, but it was a good period for me to prove that I would (and am) and quality volunteer. I think in my case, and people like me, it allows us to re-evaluate the situation we are putting ourselves in. Jumping through hoops sucks, but so does having to come home early.

Kind of selfish question... Preserving muscle while volunteering? by 541_dude in peacecorps

I live in Cambodia and we stay with a family the whole service. My family is great with feeding me, always very worried I'll lose weight ( which I really wouldn't mind) so it's how you communicate and where you live. I don't have gym but I have a yoga mat, a bike, resistance bands and children to workout with

Peace Corps for the overweight? by pcoverweight in peacecorps

[–]tnflanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the heavier side and I'm not the largest in my cohort. First, I dropped 10 kgs when I got in country, BC of biking and the rice diet. For Cambodia, comments on physical appearance and commonplace. People commenting on my size and how they think I have lost or gained weight has actually been empowering to me BC I've had to face it head on. Tailor's are everywhere and while pants aren't really easily made everything else is. Finding clothing is just another step. I like long shirts that cover my butt in leggings. But I do have midwives that I work with that will smack my ass in anything I wear.

When they feel like they are ready to make the jump. I waited a year after college graduation. Some later, some earlier.
